”Your father seems like a very respectable man, perhaps sometime in the future I could learn a thing or two from him.” Slowing her pace to a more languid one, she instinctively enlargened a leaf stemming from the atop her head to catch the shifting sun rays.

Mystel noticed the odd choice of words - would have been. Creasing her eyebrows ever so slightly, she pondered if it would be too insensitive to ask further as she listened on.

“Hey, if you know a thing of two about traditional medicine, I’d be glad to accept your help. I would feel more like a legitimate doctor or nurse if I relied on more... authentic remedies to heal.” Walking on, she let a delicate silence settle for a few moments as they arrived at the lake. More often than not, Mystel liked to let her surroundings paint the atmosphere as she relished in the simplicity of existing. Taking in a slow inhale, she let her lips curl into a smile as she continued:

“Well, if you believe that healing others would lead to an enjoyable life, what’s stopping you?”

Jeremiah's smile didn't leave, but the warmth visibly faded from it a bit as he slowed down to a stop at Mystel's line of questioning. "Ah, well the thing is- you can't meet him. My parents, the ones who raised me, they died years ago."

His form changed slightly, with a pair of Ram's horns staring to grow and curl from underneath his hair as he lost his focus on his Glamour.

It still very much hurt, every time he thought about his parents. His dads. He had heard all of the talking points, internalized them as best as he could. Logically, he knew that it wasn't his fault, that there was nothing he could have done to prevent it. But that didn't stop it from hurting and from him wishing that he had been able to.

Mist slowly leaked out of the corners of his eyes, dissipating almost as soon as it hit the air. Jeremiah wiped at his face, giving an embarrassed laugh. "I apologise. It was years ago, but I still miss them greatly."

Mystel was taken aback at the news but ensured she remained composed - outwardly at least. As she spoke, her tone was just barely shaky whilst her voice was gentle yet still audible. “I’m so sorry to hear that.” The girl paused for a moment. What could she say having already treaded on a landmine? Mystel’s vines reeled back ever so slightly as she continued on the pathway. “I...” More silence. She didn’t want to make it about herself yet she couldn’t string any words together to express empathy. The girl knew not of his situations nor his plight but for what it’s worth, she then continued: “understand your sentiments.”

I apologise. It was years ago, but I still miss them greatly.

“Hey, there’s no need to apologise.” Pausing, she sparred a sideways glance at the lake as the sombre atmosphere slowly sombre atmosphere settled in. “It’s alright to have things you want to leave behind.” Her mind wandered back to her younger days - an era a blissful happiness that all ended with a blazing fire. “Some like to talk about it, some don’t but if you do, I’ll always be here for you alright?”

"Da always used to say that talking makes hurts better. But I've talked about it plenty and I don't know if I'll ever really feel better about it." Jeremiah looked at Mystel when she recoiled from him slightly, sighing and going through his now standard procedure of slowly reinfusing his phylactery with magic so that he could return to his fully human form. He didn't speak again until the ram horns were gone and he was sure that he once again looked like a normal human boy.

"Thank you for your kind words. I have met so many lovely, caring people here that it has been easier than it otherwise might have been. The transition, going to school, everything. I do not know where I would be if Father had not sent me here after I went to live with him."

He realized that that might have sounded strange, so he let out a little laugh and clarified. "My biological father. My parents, the ones who raised me, adopted me. I went to live with my biological father after they passed."

"Your father seems like a wise man." She caught herself staring just a little too long as he slowly shifted back to his human form. Silently averting her gaze, she quickly flashed a beam as she internally chided herself for possibly appearing rude.

The girl let out a soft chuckle as Jeremiah explained his peculiar family situation. "I'm glad that everything turned out alright in the end. Say, how did you find Starlight Academy when you first entered?" Stopping in her tracks for a moment, her vines curled as she lightly stretched her arms whilst glancing around the lake in a breath of reminiscence. "I remember when I first came in as a student I was rather afraid of speaking with all the other students. I'm actually quite amazed at how easily you get along with the other students."

Jeremiah stopped, considering the question posed to him by Mystel with a gentle hum in his throat. He kicked his foot gently, making his heel scuff against the sidewalk. "I had some difficulty when I first arrived. People are not used to kindness, I think. Sometimes they do not know how to just... be quiet."

Jeremiah looked over at her, his smile returning with it's full, sunshine force. "You are a very pleasant conversation partner, Ms. Mystel. I understand that you may have been shy or cautious when you first arrived, but I do not see that at all now. You..." he paused, thinking of the word that best expressed what he meant to say. With a nod, Jeremiah continued, "shine. You shine brightly."

Jeremiah was intriguing to say the least. Mystel hadn't been teaching for a long time but this student struck her as different - mature, kind, an endless depth of personality. "I can see where you're coming from. Honestly, it's quite sad, the way people are shocked when treated well. I guess what matters now is that things are better and will continue to get better." Letting out a wistful sigh, she then continued simply speaking her mind with little restraint "This place is a wonderful academy and I'm glad I got to meet someone who loves it as much as I do."

You shine brightly.

Tilting her head to face the other, Mystel let her lips curl into a warm smile. "I've... never been told that before." The girl was silent for a few heartbeats, simply processing his compliment. "Thank you. I could say the same for you. Talking to you feels liberating, like a breath of fresh air - it's been a while since I've had such a conversation."
