"Uh...I kind of wanted to ask, but I didn't want to remind you about the kidnapping too much." Lochlann said, and the way he scrunched up his eyebrows gave the impression that he wasn't entirely sure if he was joking or serious. "But...are you a demon? I mean, not a sex demon, but you are pretty sexy, but I mean, I'm not trying to--"

He stopped talking and shoot his head, lifting one of his hands in apology. "Besides the admin and staff, you and Guin are the only ones who know."

Was it really a big deal if people knew what he was? The thought floored him. Before he came to SA, it was obviously a big deal, but now..? He wasn't too sure. "I'd like to keep it that way."

“Um… have you, uh… done the bad-stuff-about-water-horses thing to anyone on this island?”

"Not to completion," Loch winced at the phrasing, but he didn't know what else to say. "My last girlfriend and her friend disappeared last year. I was drunk. People just put two and two together..."

He frowned. "But..I don't think it was me. I usually dream about the ones I've...well."

They were at his building now, so Lochlann took advantage of the moment to lean against the building and catch his breath. He desperately wanted the subject off of him. "What was it like, where you lived before?"

Chloe responded to Loch’s compliment with a smirk. She loved it when people got flustered like that, especially when it was her fault.

Two girls Loch knew disappeared, and Loch was a kelpie. That would be damning enough for the torches-and-pitchforks situation. As little as she wanted to break the law, this was actually looking kind of serious. She was happy for the subject to change for a little while – she needed to think about this whole amulet situation.

“Well, to answer your first question, I don’t even know if I’m a demon.” Chloe leaned against the wall, next to Loch. “For what it’s worth, I remember being a human, sort of. But that could have been an implanted memory, or a symptom of you messing up your summoning ritual, or a bunch of shit. Even if my memories are true, maybe my real dad is a demon, so that might make me a demon too I guess?” She shrugged. They were uncomfortable thoughts to deal with, certainly, but they didn’t bother Chloe anymore. She had grown used to it. “I know a kid who can see souls who thinks I’m not a demon, but the chef, Aurum, says he has powers that only work on demons, and we know those work on me because fuck living in a world that makes sense.”

Chloe chuckled. She couldn’t remember when she stopped thinking these things were troubling and started thinking they were funny. “The place I remember living in was a lot like this place. Isolated boarding school for magical kids who aren’t supposed to exist, in a world almost exactly like this one. The big difference is, there was only one kind of magical person, as far as we knew. Most of us could pass for human. Being one of the three kids who couldn’t, I wasn’t even allowed to leave the school. I hated most of the other kids there, because…” another shrug. “You know. Usual high school bullshit I guess. Oh! and there was a looming threat of genocide once the public learned about us. That part was pretty cool.”

Chloe realized that she was starting to rant. She also noticed that Loch still looked tired. He was not about to make it up four flights of stairs on crutches without help.

“Uh… you want me to carry you up the stairs? It wouldn’t be too much trouble for me.” Chloe realized she might have to feed on him a little to make it easier. Or maybe that was just her cravings talking.

..and we know those work on me because fuck living in a world that makes sense.”

Loch gave a knowing laugh. "Looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, but it's a goose. Only in Manta Carlos."

He listened, interested, his head tilted to the side, nodding here and there, but as the conversation continued his expression shifted to a few steps away from horror.

I wasn’t even allowed to leave the school. I hated most of the other kids there, because…” another shrug. “You know. Usual high school bullshit I guess. Oh! and there was a looming threat of genocide once the public learned about us. That part was pretty cool.”

"Well shit," Lochlann said, because it was the only thing he could say.

"I guess I was sort of expecting...I don't know, fire and brimstone? We didn't really talk about Hell or the Other World too much in my family. Although if I had to pick my idea of eternal punishment, high school might be it. But damn. I still feel bad about dragging you here, but at least you could leave the school if we--you-- wanted to. Cloaking spells and all that stuff."

“Uh… you want me to carry you up the stairs? It wouldn’t be too much trouble for me.”

Loch almost dropped one of his crutches and ended up sort of waving his arms like a chicken for a moment. "You...you can't just..carry me up the stairs!"

It was only partially a sexist thing. Chloe was only a few inches shorter than him, even counting her horns, but that still made her taller than most girls he'd dated. But still. The idea of anyone carrying him up the stairs--let alone a hot chick--was too much for him to handle.

In this situation, the only person he had to blame was Guinevere and Lochlann never wanted to kill a woman until this very moment.

I'll, uh. I'll just walk. But thank you." he said, glancing at the doors. He was still hoping to convince her to help him, but the stairs were a more looming challenge. He had to think of something better than European Safari anyway.

"Did you want to, um, come up?" he asked, lifting his eyebrows for the other meaning that come up implied....and for once, not the raunchy ones.

“Yes.” Chloe answered immediately. She hoped she didn’t sound too desperate. It had been too long since she last fed. Well over a week, aside from the occasional, seconds-long snacks she’d managed while bumping into people. “I, uh, also want to make sure you can make it up there… oh, wait. Duh. Shouldn’t this building have an elevator?”

Chloe held up a finger, signaling him to wait, then went inside and around a few corners. She reappeared in a matter of seconds, holding the door open for him. “Stairs are for chumps, you have an elevator. As much fun as I would have carrying you up…” Chloe wasn’t being sarcastic. The way he squirmed at the suggestion almost made her want to do it anyway. Maybe if he got tired enough on the way to his room…

“Anyway. It’s right around that corner.”

Lochlann stared at her when she left, and then he stared at her some more. He didn't stare at her as though she'd just grown wings and breathed fire, because that was something that wouldn't surprise him after being at this school for over a year.

He cleared his throat, then said, "What's an elevator?"

It sounded unpleasant.

Still, he took a deep breath, and followed Chloe into the building, waiting in the lobby. "Isn't that a closet?"

Chloe opened her mouth, as though she were about to speak, then thought better of it and looked away, gathering her thoughts. How could Loch live in this building without knowing about elevators?

“An elevator…” the demon began to explain, “Is a… box you can stand in, to let the building carry you up or down to a different floor. So you don’t have to use stairs to go upstairs. This is completely safe,” she assured him, “Unless you’ve angered the spirit of the building. Then it might trap you in its elevator for weeks on end or try to kill you. That probably won’t be a problem, though.”

The elevator had a panel with two buttons in the wall next to it, one with an arrow pointing down, and one with an arrow pointing up. Chloe pushed the one with the up arrow, and the button glowed with a pale orange light. A faint rumbling could be heard beyond the elevator’s smooth steel doors. A high pitched ding and the doors slid open by themselves, like a layered steel maw, revealing a well-lit, closet-sized enclosure for them to stand in.

“After you,” she said.

Lochlann did not like this. He did not like it one bit.

His palms were sweating and he leaned against the wall so he could wipe them on his pants without losing his crutches and falling over. His heart was racing and he felt light-headed. He had the sudden horrible realization that maybe this was Chloe's plan all along.

Maybe she was really, really pissed at him after all, and all the nice words and what he thought might be the beginning of a friendship was just a clever ruse to let him lower his guard, and then she'd strike.

Because the thing in front of him horrified him, and Lochlann had been held at gunpoint twice now.

"I don't...I mean.."Loch stammered.

But he took a step in, even though his face blanched, and then gripped the handle on the inside. He did this because he deserved anything that was going to happen to him. But he still said to her, "Are you sure we can't just take the stairs?"

Loch seemed horrified. Chloe tried very hard not to laugh. Did he actually believe her?

“I mean, it’s either this or me carrying you. You aren’t well enough to go up stairs by yourself right now.” As she spoke, she followed him in. Her tail twisted past her and tapped at a button labeled 4, which also lit up.

The doors closed by themselves. The floor began to rumble and move below their feet. For a second, they felt heavier as the elevator accelerated upwards. A number above the inner doors told them what floor they had reached, letting out a faint beep whenever they got one floor higher. Chloe was looking away from Loch, staring at the doors.

She didn’t actually expect him to believe her. She had forgotten that spirits were probably a real thing in this world. Maybe possessed elevators were a real thing, too.

By the time they reached his floor, Lochlann's face was completely white and his skin was clammy. Still, he followed Chloe* out of the elevator and down the hall, doing his best to avoid looking at her butt.

It was better than walking or worse--having her carry him--but Lochlann felt uncomfortable and awkward, and there was only one person he could blame: Guinevere Freaking Haze.

When they got to his door, he patted his pockets until he found his key, opened the door, and he stepped inside, inviting her in with a wave of his hand. The second they were inside, Lochlann unbuttoned his shirt and tossed it in the laundry basket in the corner. He was again oblivious to any kind of connotation there might be from his action; he just wanted out of that damn shirt and every physical reminder of the last week.

"Want something to drink?" he asked. He leaned against his counter, the crutches awkward under his bare arm, and he realized he wasn't sure how he was going to deal with the next few weeks. He fished out a bottle of pain killers from the cabinet above him and dry swallowed a handful. "Or do you just want to, uh, you know?"

He glanced at his bed, hoping he didn't look too eager, but he couldn't deny that he was starting to feel the ache. Maybe it was being shot and cooped up in a room, stuffed with painkillers and gods knew what for the last week. Maybe it was the humiliation. Maybe it was loneliness. But Lochlann was ready to do something really stupid.

"I still think we should do it," he said. "THere has to be a way to break into her room without it ending badly."

*I apologize for the slight powerplay here. I made the assumption that they were just going to his room. If you need me to go back and edit I can definitely do that!

Chloe couldn’t see why Lochlann wanted to go shirtless, but she wasn’t going to complain. They were already going to do this whole casual-supernatural-intimacy thing. She wasn’t going to let herself feel bad about ogling him, either.

She sat down on his bed. “I have homework, so alcohol’s probably a bad idea right now. Let’s just, uh…” she tore her eyes from his torso and made eye contact. “You know.” It was already weird. There wasn’t much that she could do to make it weirder.

Lochlann said that he still thought they should ‘do it.’ It took Chloe a little bit too long to realize what he meant by ‘it.’ She blushed a little. The feeding was already getting to her head. “Guinevere,” she said. “Right. Um… maybe we should see if we can skip breaking the law? I could take her for coffee or something and talk it over with her. So it would be public and she wouldn’t try anything. If she would want to try something. But hopefully I could get her to give it back.”
