The scent of knowledge attracts me to the nerds

"It wasn't wrong, I guess it's just been a while since anyone has been so..." He stopped, trying to think of the word. "Proper." Maylynn wasn't sure if that was the best word to use in this situation, but he couldn't think of anything else. Staring at the boy for a few seconds, he jumped lightly as he began to talk again. "In the library? Yes I do." He says, calming himself down from the scare. "It's sad to see that not a lot of people want to learn more."

Proper? Well, that was certainly one way to put it. He could use that excuse from now on, and the line was cached in his memory like everything else, bookmarked just for good measure.

"How unfortunate." His expression remained as plastic and his voice monotone as ever. However, that was a rather sad thing to hear. Did humans not want knowledge anymore? They didn't like the library? Why?

"But I trust this place will be of good use to me for learning. I am new around here, you see." New to the planet, yes. Hopefully nobody had picked up on it yet.

Yes, it was sad that not as many people enjoyed knowledge as much as he did. He saw it as a way to expand his mind, to make himself smarter and to know more about the world he lived in. "I agree." He nods his head, knowing that most people he knew were more focused on relationships, or being young. "New?" He tilts his head lightly. "I have been here for a long time, so if you ever need something, or need more knowledge can come to me."

Yesterday's eyes went down to the book, starting to flip through. His auditory and ocular processing were two different things, so he could listen and read without slowing down either. He seemed to flip through the page at a faster rate than average, but all he had to do was read and store the information.

"Yes, thank you." He tried a human smile then, though it came out plastic. He had yet to find out how to smile without making it look like it was a sham, which technically it was.

"How long have you been here? It looks like it takes people very long to read through a book." Could one person ever read through everything?

Gazing at the speed of the man's flipping, he wondered how someone could read that fast. It was as if he only had to skim through everything in order to understand. Maylynn wished that he could do that, as that would have saved him a lot of study time. As he looked at the person in front of him, the smile that he received as far from normal. It looked fake, as if he was forcing himself, though he wasn't going to hold it against the man, as he too was not the best at smiling. He nodded quickly to his thank you afterwards, not wanting to seem like he over-appreciated the gesture. "About seven years." He said with another quick nod. "I guess it depends on the book." He was a rather slow reader, compared to some people he had seen. He would rather take in every moment of the experience of reading, that is if it was pleasure reading. If it was for his classwork, he made sure that he remembered the information he received. Making notes, color coating, making diagrams, anything that could fill his creative learning side. "Time goes by so fast though, so I don't really notice."

Seven years was a long time, wasn't it? The beings who made Yesterday were quite long lived in human years, growing to the ripe old age of about two hundred. Yesterday himself was quite an infant, though he knew that with proper maintenance he was supposed to chug on forever. He was only twelve, technically, but he was modeled after and given the brain function of someone in their mid to late twenties.

"Ah, yes it does. Especially around here." Wait, no, the theory of general relativity said time was mostly the same for everyone. It wasn't different in different places... time zones not included, maybe. He blinked, as if confused by his own words, before nodding to himself. Yes, just act confident.

His statement was fine, but it was more so the confused look and a weirdly placed nod that made Maylynn wonder if the man had confused himself. "That does make sense." He said, wondering if the fact that so many people that had abilities were all in one place, that it would be possible for time to indeed go faster. There were most likely students and other people or things that could manipulate time, though Maylynn had not met anyone of that sort. Stopping his train of thinking, Maylynn glance back at the man, to see if he was still reading at his alarming speed. "How do you read that fast?" He asked, a bit nervous of what the answer would be.

Yesterday was speeding through the book faster than any human could've possibly done... And then the boy asked him about how he read so fast and he caught himself. Right, yes, humans didn't just store readings in their memory or databases, because they didn't have one.

"I am... a fast reader." Which was technically true. He read fast because that was what he'd been programmed with, for the good of the people who activated him. "It is quite strange, is it not?"

He blinked again rather owlishly, feigning innocence even though his face might as well have been a plastic mask. He was already halfway through the book.

A fast reader was an understatement. The person in front of him had already read halfway through the book. He was not sure if he was allowed to pry. Was it alright for him to ask as to how he had gotten halfway through the fairly large book in a matter of minutes? Most likely, that statement would just cause him to embarrass himself, as the boy in front of him most likely had a very logical reason. "Is there some type of trick? Maybe some way you could teach me?" He asked cautiously, staring up for a few seconds before leaning in, as if to make sure that no one else heard the fast reader's secret.

How? Now that one was harder to answer. Yesterday's face didn't shift, remaining static as always, only this time he was thinking of an answer. Towards the end, he decided something humans called a 'white lie' was in order... Not that concepts had any tangible colour, though. Humans were so strange like that.

"I read quickly my memorizing shapes, not words." Which was true, technically speaking. He put the book down, spreading the pages between them. "Like this. This letter is a shape, not a word. I remember these shapes, and recall them later." Like taking a photograph... For Yesterday, that bit was literal.

He was telling the boy how his memory worked... not the fact that he had a database to memorize to in the first place.
