The positive and negative have a way of blending in

Dr. Aiden Hart was looking for his coffee.

The man was dressed in his usual work attire: khakis, fitted shirt, lab coat. His blond hair was clean. A thin-framed pair of glasses rested on his nose, the unfortunate result of spending too many hours staring at a screen reviewing medical journals. He really should update his publishing credentials, but that was a thought for a different time.

His most pressing thought was finding his coffee. His coffee, not the horrible blend the hospital had on set. He needed his coffee before someone-

Handed him

a clipboard.

"Dr. Hart, you have a patient waiting for you in room two," a nurse said and pointed him in direction of room two.

It was away from the coffee.

Aiden sighed, stepped into the room, and put on his best health-care smile. It was actually reassuring.

'Good afternoon," he said. God, he hoped it was afternoon. "Can you confirm your name and what brings you in today?"

Perched up on the exam bed she had been directed to by a rather brusque nurse, Jii swung her bare feet idly as her eyes scanned the unfamiliar room. She chewed anxiously on one of her small, newly polished claws, glancing around at the assorted medicals posters and instruments with careful intrigue. She hadn't the slightest idea what to expect from this appointment, or the doctor themselves for that matter, and her nerves were suffering as a result.

After around ten minutes of waiting, she perked her ears up as footsteps approached the door, a man who she could only assume was her doctor emerging through shortly after. He had a bright smile plastered across his face, but she could tell that he was somewhat exasperated, or even annoyed. She gave a series of small nods as he addressed her, and offered her own, much smaller smile in response. "Um, yes, my name is Jii. Just Jii...and, well, I've been experiencing some odd developments lately that, after consideration, seem to be extreme variations on some of the natural traits of my species. I was hoping you'd be able to help me figure out what's going on, and if I should be at all worried."

"Alright, Jil," Aiden said.

His voice softened once her name came out his lips. He settled into the chair across from her.

"My name is Dr. Hart. I'm a physician here on the island. You can find me here, at the academy, and occasionally at the behavioral corrections institute, but I'd be hopeful I wouldn't find you there," he said, giving her a smile. It was a gentle tease. The message the smile intended to send was this: even if I did find you there, you would be okay.

Aiden was generally good at this.

"So, Jil, how this is going to work is that I'm going to ask you some questions and if you can do your best to be honest with me, I can do my best to help you," he started to explain. "If there's anything you dont' want to answer, I'd rather you just tell me you don't want to answer instead of lying or coming up with an answer, is that okay? Your records are kept confidential."

He had way too many patients who came in for "food poisoning" who failed to tell him that they'd eaten an embalmed corpse.

"The first question I have is this: What is your species?"

Though he held a clipboard and pen, all of Aiden's attention was on her.

Jii nodded along as he spoke, his words were doing a decent job of calming her down. She was maintaining eye contact for the most part, but was still very visibly nervous, fidgeting quite a bit and looking around the room aimlessly. "It's very good to meet you, Dr. Hart...thank you for helping me today." She giggled quietly when he gave the little poke about the corrections institute, she could feel that he wanted to put her at ease.

As he explained how his question asking was going to be conducted, she simply smiled, giving another nod. "Don't worry about any of that, I wouldn't lie...my biggest concern is just figuring out what's going on." She blinked when he asked her species, there were likely some scholars of magical creatures who had done some writings on her people, but she wasn't certain. "Umm, I'm a Pixan, but I'm not sure if you've heard of us."

Pixan.

Aiden had never heard of that. Aiden shifted in his seat, bringing up his right ankle to rest on his left thigh. He moved the clipboard into the triangle of space between and put the pen down.

"I don't believe i have," he said. He offered her the same reassuring smile. "However, we'll still progress fairly similar even if I was familiar with the species. I don't make assumptions I can't back up."

Aiden realized he could offer a brief explanation, "Take werewolves, for example. It's a given that they'll turn into a wolf, but what kind of wolf? For how long? Are they allergic to silver? Every one is different."

He leaned back in the chair and asked, "is Pixan a type of fae? like pixie?"

Jii shook her head when he asked if her people were a type of fae, this particular question having been commonplace ever since she arrived on the island. Not sure whether to be disappointed or relieved that the doctor wasn't familiar with them, she did her best to offer a smile. "N-no, we aren't fae. I suppose you could say we're our own, special thing. That thing isn't fae, though."

She was obviously nervous about the whole ordeal, chewing on her claws as a force of common habit. The example that he gave regarding werewolves eased mind just the tiniest bit, and her posture relaxed ever so slightly in response to his calming demeanor. "I promise I'll be honest with you, doctor. I know that you'll do your best to help, and I'm sorry that information on my people isn't more widely available."
