Lapis lazuli eyes wandered across the cerulean surface glittering with drops of sunlight. As she sat, her legs crossed with her hands placed in her lap, Lathia contemplated going out into the water to capture the golden jewels of sun sprinkled across the lake. The cool water would be a relief to her, the aquatic plants brushing up against her a balm on frayed nerves. But as she rubbed her nose to rid herself of an itch, the siren decided otherwise. While this was a place for magical people and creatures, she still wasn’t comfortable flaunting her tail.
For the past five hundred years, she had bathed in secrete and only snuck out to swim on the very rare occasion –usually when she was about to leave a village or city. And each time her legs turned into the powerful cobalt fin, fear ran rampant through her veins.
She imagined herself surfacing from the lake, red siren hair spilling from her head, and waving to a student; both of them completely unperturbed. A scoff unwittingly came out at the thought. That wouldn’t be happening any time soon. Running a hand through her now wavy raven hair, the seemingly young woman muse that it wasn’t because of the students.
Lathia bushed off her black capris and straightened her billowy white shirt while standing. Taking a steadying breath, the newcomer faced the school looming off in the distance. Why was she so hesitant? After all, this would be the perfect place to live and work! She wouldn’t have to hid or be ashamed of who she was –which she had been for a majority of her long life.
The freshly hired teacher figured that it was only because this was an unfamiliar thing. Starting anew in any city had been a little nerve racking. So it was only natural that this would make her extra tentative. She raised her arms up and weaved her fingers together behind her head, trying to relax.
Now, all she had to do was walk towards the school no matter how nervous she was.
