The Nervous Newcomer

Lapis lazuli eyes wandered across the cerulean surface glittering with drops of sunlight. As she sat, her legs crossed with her hands placed in her lap, Lathia contemplated going out into the water to capture the golden jewels of sun sprinkled across the lake. The cool water would be a relief to her, the aquatic plants brushing up against her a balm on frayed nerves. But as she rubbed her nose to rid herself of an itch, the siren decided otherwise. While this was a place for magical people and creatures, she still wasn’t comfortable flaunting her tail.

For the past five hundred years, she had bathed in secrete and only snuck out to swim on the very rare occasion –usually when she was about to leave a village or city. And each time her legs turned into the powerful cobalt fin, fear ran rampant through her veins.

She imagined herself surfacing from the lake, red siren hair spilling from her head, and waving to a student; both of them completely unperturbed. A scoff unwittingly came out at the thought. That wouldn’t be happening any time soon. Running a hand through her now wavy raven hair, the seemingly young woman muse that it wasn’t because of the students.

Lathia bushed off her black capris and straightened her billowy white shirt while standing. Taking a steadying breath, the newcomer faced the school looming off in the distance. Why was she so hesitant? After all, this would be the perfect place to live and work! She wouldn’t have to hid or be ashamed of who she was –which she had been for a majority of her long life.

The freshly hired teacher figured that it was only because this was an unfamiliar thing. Starting anew in any city had been a little nerve racking. So it was only natural that this would make her extra tentative. She raised her arms up and weaved her fingers together behind her head, trying to relax.

Now, all she had to do was walk towards the school no matter how nervous she was.

There was a new teacher. Iridian had learnt that in the library. Apparently, she taught something musical, but she couldn't put a finger on what it was now. Not that it mattered. Though from what she'd heard, the new teacher was arriving today. It would only be polite to say hello. Besides, there needed to be at least one teacher that Iridian was comfortable in having a conversation with, and she'd heard she was hanging around the lake for a few moments.

So, naturally, she disappeared off to the lake, perhaps only to note a name and a face. Perhaps a species, a specialised power. For a few moments, she watched the relaxing ripples of the clear water with a sigh. It was a picturesque scene to say the least. Iridian wasn't sure why she hadn't been there before. Looking around, there wasn't many people. Good. Though, across the body of water, she could see a figure. A moving figure, yet still in one spot. That could be the new teacher. Squinting to get a better view, she saw that it was, in fact, someone she did not recognise.

Iridian found this a good sign, and edged closer to the black-haired woman until she was standing a few metres away. She decided this could either go three ways; she introduced herself and got in trouble or a reply. Or she was addressed. After a few seconds, Iridian weighed the options and realised that she was the one to start coversation for once. Looking over the lake again, before turning her head to face the woman, her chestnut eyes watching every move. "Are you new?" It seemed the best option from the few. Upfront and hinting, but not overly confident or pushing for a detailed answer. Iridian's favourite kind of questions. Short and simple.

((Sorry! Didn't see you posted until now! Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. Getting the first thread started is always hard))

In the throes of her insecurity and indecision, Lathia almost didn't hear the friendly voice ask her a question. But her brain pulled the teacher out of her doubt and an automatic smile gathered up the sides of her mouth. Turning to the voice, she saw a young lady -maybe a high school student?- with big brown doe eyes looking up at her with a welcoming expression.

Lathia's smile spread into her eyes, become more genuine. Turning to fully face the girl, the siren nodded her head and said, "Yes, quiet. 'Fresh of the boat' in fact.'"

She laughed at her own pun, since most of them were normally lame, and closed the short distance between them. Holding out a hand for a proper greeting, Lathia said amiably, "My name is Lathia Syra, or Ms. Syra for you; I'll be the new singing teacher. And who do I owe this amazing welcome to?"

Lathia was always thrilled to meet such inviting people. These were the beings that kept her on the land, sticking to crabs and fish instead of feasting on human flesh in the sea with her own kind. They made every uncomfortable and painful moment worth it.

((It's okay. Also, no problem.))

Iridian smiled, glad she'd found the right person. She couldn't see a representative around, which was strange, since she was sure new people did get one to give a tour or answer any queries. Still, perhaps they were late. Maybe Iridian would kill enough time for them to arrive without seeming late. That, or take their place if the problem arose. Butterflies flew in her stomach temporarily at the thought, but she kept the smile and locked her worry inside.

The teacher laughed at her joke, and although Iridian was not sure why, she laughed as well, before realising they were by the lake... or perhaps it was something else. She'd find out eventually. People trusted her... at least, most of them. Doubts crept into her ears before noticing the hand that was given to her. Shaking it politely, before speaking once again, "Nice to meet you, Ms. Syra. I'm Iridian." She wondered why it was amazing. She'd only really asked a question. Perhaps Ms. Syra was one of the relaxed teachers who wanted everybody else to feel relaxed. They were Iridian's favourite kind of teachers. Singing... Music was a big part of some magic... healing spells and curses sometimes used a certain tune to be activated... but singing normally screamed ordinary to Iridian. Perhaps that was personal opinion. She wondered why that was the choice of the teacher in front of her, and how it connected to who she was.

After shaking Iridian's hand, Lathia turned back to look at the school. At least the first person she met was a brilliantly nice person. The last thing she needed was some rude and off-put representative to introduce her. She was going to be here a while so she really wanted to start this off right.

Pointing to the prestigious building off in the distance, Lathia asked, "Would you be able to show me to the administration office or to the teacher dormitories? I'm horribly lost."

Shrugging her shoulder, she added after a moment with a smile, "Though, I have to say I'm impressed I made it this far. I at least found the school grounds."

"Sure," Iridian said without even thinking to the first question. She shouldn't have really. But perhaps the actual representative would be waiting at the Admissions Office. Most new people started out there. "It's not as confusing when you get to know it, but can be a bit overwhelming." She wondered whether Ms Syra would ever be her teacher, or if she was wasting her time. The quicker she could hand over to the representative, the better. But for now, at least, she could be helpful.

"They should have a campus map somewhere," Iridian agreed. Perhaps they did and she had not yet found it. It would be extremely convenient at this moment. Especially for new people. Perhaps there was one in the office, or by the dormitories.
