Why would anyone want a box that could prevent echoes? As far as Sushi understood, echoes were a lot of fun. He was unfamiliar with recording, the word that is. He’d had a video of himself taken before and he’d seen videos of people on a television before.

“What is recording? Why do you not want an echo?” Hikaru was usually good at explaining stuff like this.

"Recording is...when you keep a sound! I will show you." He turned his laptop on, quickly logging in and putting the microphone into the booth and screwing the pop filter on. Pressing 'record' on his software, he said "This is a recording. I have keeped the sound." And turned to Sushi.

"I have recorded now! I keep the sound, and I can play back the sound when I like to." He said, playing it back. "And now, I will act. I will pretend to be sad. Please do not worry!"

Putting his language charm back on, he took a deep breath and opened a new project file, arming it to record. And with a snap of his fingers, he was crying. "Why... why did you have to leave me?!" And with another snap, he was straight back to his normal self. "Now I'm gonna record it again, but with echo." And he simply set the mic down onto the desk, recording the line again.

Then he added a backing track. "This is why we don't want an echo." He said, playing Sushi a sample of the reverbed acting track. It felt unnatural, since the music and the vocals didn't go together. It just sounded so unreal and unprofessional. And then he played the booth track. It was smoother, more real. As if the music and the vocals could have been recorded in the same room. It just sounded nicer. But maybe Sushi wouldn't be able to tell the difference...

Sushi watched curiously as Hikaru did a few things that he didn’t totally understand. Then when the sound he’d recorded was played back, Sushi let out a quiet “Whoa.”

When Hikaru said he was going to act and not to worry, the fish boy nodded. Though he wasn’t particularly fond of Hikaru’s acting. It was a bit too realistic and still made him a bit uncomfortable hearing his friend so upset.

Regardless, he kept silent and made sure not to worry. With each successive time that Hikaru played or recorded the line he got a bit more comfortable. Hikaru seemed to snap back to normal each time. It was only an act.

With or without the echo, Sushi had a hard time telling much of a difference. For him, everything was played inside of his helmet as if it was coming through a walkie talkie, so sound quality was not something he had a firm grasp on.

“I am sorry Hikaru. I can not tell the difference. But I do like recording. It is cool, and you are good at acting. Too good, you give me worry even when you said not to.”

Hikaru found his cheeks going a little red. He was... he was being complemented on his acting. It was...nice. He saw at the corners of his eyes that the illusions were at play again - sunshine and sparkles coming off of his blushy head. He'd learn how to use them as an extension of his emotions, and it was actually pretty fun to do it.

"I, um... thank you." He said a little quietly, playing with his fingers a little. He decided to take the charm back off and stand up - his room was completely explored now! ...oh wait. "Sushi, I will give you something. I hope you will like it!"

He rooted around in his drawers and found it - an anime sticker. Celty Sturluson - sure, they weren''t the same thing, but they both wore helmets that covered their faces, so... "Here you go!" He showed the sticker to Sushi before putting it on his raincoat with a grin. Guiding Sushi to his mirror, he showed Sushi the sticker he'd put on. "Do you like it?"

He was going to give something? Sushi curiously looked over at Hikaru and watched as he went through his drawers. It was hard to see what he got until he was shown the sticker. A person with a helmet just like his?

He didn't say much, trying to get a better look at it as Hikaru went ahead and put it on his coat. He then contently allowed himself to be brought to the mirror where he continued to look. The helmet on the sticker was pretty similar to his own aside from the lack of tubes and the addition of cat ears.

"Yes. I like it. Thank you Hikaru! They have a helmet like this." He pointed to his own helmet.

After admiring the sticker and giving the room another look around, he turned his helmet to face Hikaru. "Thank you for showing your room Hikaru. I can show my room too?"

Hikaru smiled, pleased. He thought that it'd be good for Sushi to have an anime character to relate to. "Yes! They have a helmet like this. This is a girl. But Sushi is not a girl. I am happy that you like it!" He felt very proud of himself.

"Yes, you can show your room! Do you know how to get to your room?" He asked, ready to let his buddy lead the way. Maybe things wouldn't be so boring after all, especially if he got to hang out with friends like this more often.

Sushi's head bobbed up and down after he was asked if he knew the way back to his room. Truth be told, the little guy had a pretty strong sense of direction. He could get to and from the community center completely on his own and the same stood for all sorts of places around the school and park.

"Follow me." He made a turn down the hall and to the stairs, checking to make sure Hikaru was following. Then continued on through another hall on a lower floor for a long while before stopping in front of his room. "Here."

Without much hesitation, he then turned the knob and opened the door to reveal his room to Hikaru. "Ta da"

Sushi's room was certainly an odd one. The first thing someone would notice was the huge fish tank which seemed to take up almost half of the room. Inside the tank was a large clear bed that looked kind of like a jellyfish but bed shaped, as well as a special 1000 piece puzzle meant for underwater that was almost completed.

Outside of the tank were a great number of crafts and drawings. It was possible to tell what a few of the drawings were, but none of them were very impressive. Some could be recognizable as people such as Violet, Callie, Jeremiah's lich form, Xid and even one of Hikaru with glowing eyes and star shapes drawn around the rough picture. Aside from the drawings, most of the other artistic pieces were far more impressive sculptures made out of shells. There were also a lot of stray shells just kind of chilling everywhere, including inside the tank. Lastly, was a weird station that looked kind of like a shower in the corner of the room, meant for charging Sushi's helmet overnight and filling it with new water in the morning.

Hikaru followed the guy, content to not force conversation. To be honest, it probably would have made things more difficult - he'd have to worry about whether or not he knew the right words and grammar to make himself understood.

It was one of the things he liked about Sushi - when it came to learning English, they were equals. Sushi wouldn't give him any weird looks or blink when he spoke without the charm, simply accepting his mistakes. It inspired a sense of kinship in the red-haired boy - they were the same. Kind of.

Hikaru gasped when he saw Sushi's room. ["So cool!"] He proclaimed in Japanese, immediately drawn to the big tank. It was brilliant, lit up by the room light and spacious. It went so high too! Hikaru could probably swim in it if he wanted, although he probably wouldn't because he wasn't even sure if that stuff in the tank was water. Plus entering his friend's tank would feel kinda wrong somehow. He marvelled at the bed and puzzle, oohing and ahhing to himself as he looked at that area.

"This is your...uhhh... bed?" He asked in English, pointing to the jellyfish-looking shape on the tank's floor. "It is nice! I like it!" Although in the back of his mind he was worried that Sushi might spoil his sticker if he went into that substance with the coat still in.

"Mhm! It is a water bed not a land bed." He looked at Hikaru who seemed to really like his room. "You can go swimming if you like. I know you do not need to be watered, but you can still go in for fun." He'd recently learned that while most people don't need to breathe water, they still enjoy going in and swimming for fun.

Sushi then headed to the corner of his room and got a scrapbook off of a little shelf. After flipping a few pages, he carefully peeled the sticker off of his coat and pressed it onto the page. Then he took a marker and wrote something under it. When he was finished, he held it up for Hikaru to see. "There. Now helmet girl will be good and safe." The writing underneath it was actually just a weird scribble that sort of looked like letters. Sushi couldn't write, but he knew that there was usually writing underneath the pictures of a scrapbook.

Oh, so it was water. Well, that was reassuring - if it was acid or something that'd be bad. Real bad. Hikaru was glad that the tank bursting wouldn't put him in immediate danger - the teen could swim.

"I will swim! It sounds fun. But not now. I have no swimming..." He paused. "...clothes. I have no swimming clothes." He watched as Sushi put the sticker into a scrapbook, and sighed in relief.

"I am glad. The sticker girl stay safe. She is special. Because she is like Sushi!" Hikaru said, tilting his head as Sushi scribbled underneath the sticker. He couldn't read English properly anyway, so he didn't know why he was even trying right now, but... those didn't look like letters. Or maybe they were, and this was a new handwriting style.

"Your...your writing is good! I like it!" He didn't know what it meant, but it looked nice. And that was what mattered. "What it says?"
