Katie looked down at the worksheet. No closer to actually understanding any of it then she had been when she first got it. Looking around the room, she spotted someone else who also seemed to be struggling. Maybe they could work together on this? Two heads were better than one after all.

Eventually she moved, taking an open seat next to them. "Hi there! I'm Katie! It looked like you were having a hard time. But don't worry, I'm here to help!"

Yuki looked up from his worksheet with relief, honestly glad to be able to interact with someone. He used to have a friend that helped him with maths, but now they weren't around as much. He never really got an explanation for it, but things happened. Life changed.

"Um...hiya. I'm Yuki." He said back, a little nervous. This...this girl was kind of cute. Not that he'd say it out loud. But...yeah. It was nice to see that people were still friendly and stuff - it was kind of out of the blue, though. Yuki didn't think he'd even seen this girl before, but oh well. She was probably another of the many transfer students the academy always seemed to get.

"That'd be great..." He laughed with obvious relief. "I'm really having trouble with these sampling strategies. How do you get stratified sample data here?" He said, pointing to question three.

Alright! This seemed to be working well enough, Yuki seemed friendly, and whats more, he had readily accepted her help. Maybe this could all work out in the end. Now all Katie had to do was act like she knew what she was doing.

Looking back at the sheet, she realized this might be a little harder than she initially planned. She tried her hardest to think back to what the teacher had said about sampling, finally, it hit her, and she turned towards Yuki.

"I think we're supposed to draw results from each group." She said, looking at the data. "Like we combine data from this group, and this group to get our answer." She answered with a small nod "What about question 4?"

He nodded, beginning the calculations and going further down the worksheet before carrying on the conversation. Thank the heavens that they were allowed to use calculators in this class. Honestly, Yuki hated statistics, but he saw the point. It was useful to be able to look at different methods of taking data and understanding why different methods had their own merits and drawbacks.

"Right. Question four..." He was glad that there were only five questions in total. "...oh wow. So we're meant to figure out the product moment correlation coefficient... Any ideas?" He asked, looking helplessly at his new maths guru. "I remember that we use our scientific calculators to do it, but past that..." He mused, tapping his pencil on the desk.

Katie could only blink in confusion at the mention of the correlation coefficient, she knew it had something to do with decimals but outside of that, she had nothing. She also had no clue how to find it using a calculator. Still, Yuki was counting on her to help him, so she had to fake it. For now at least.

"Umm, I think we need to find how close they are to each other." She said, her voice a little shaky. After a moment she continued, her voice a bit more confident "Like, if its positive then they're close together, and if its a negative then they aren't. But ummmm.. You remember how to find it, right?"

Yuki blinked, surprised that Katie didn't seem to know what she was doing this time. Perhaps she wasn't the maths genius he'd originally thought her to be.

"Hmmm...okay." He nodded, mostly to himself. "Thanks for the reminder!" He smiled politely. Yuki supposed that even if Katie didn't know everything, she was at least a brilliant morale booster. After all, who honestly knew everything? Except maybe an Eldritch monstrosity, or someone with access to a magical database of knowledge. Or someone who was constantly connected to the inter--

Okay, clearly he was getting distracted. "Hmm...Katie, do you remember how to get these into statistics mode?" He asked with a sheepish laugh, offering her his Casio calculator. "I thiiiink I might know how to find it from there, but I completely forgot how to get this thing to start a table."

Maybe they still had a chance, if they worked together.

Katie

Katie could only stare at the calculator Yuki had pulled out. Which made sense considering the was the first she was hearing of this so called "Casio" calculator. Didn't everyone just use TI Calculators?

"I've never used this kind of calculator before..." She said with an embarrassed smile, before pulling out her own calculator. Taking a quick glance at it she saw a button simply labeled as stats. Maybe that had something to do with statistics?

While it didn't offer any help to her current problem, pressing It atleast opened up a table for her to put the data into. "OH OH! Yuki I found the table!" she said, maybe a little too loud. She took a moment to put the data in before handing the calculator back to Yuki. "I think we need to run some kind of equation.. Any ideas?"

Inwardly, Katie cringed. She was supposed to be helping Yuki, not asking him questions! Then again, she was just as lost as him, even if she didn't show. Hopefully they could just work their way through this and everything would work out in the end.

Yuki actually chuckled as Katie got excited about finding the table. "If it was my calculator, I could figure it out, but..." He shook his head. He had no idea. He was way in over his head.

It was time to admit defeat. "I'm going to call the teacher over. Hopefully they'll be able to help us out of our little predicament." He said, laughing a bit. As the teacher came over, he explained their situation and got the refresher he needed. Alright.

"Now question five..." He said, dictating the worksheet's contents. "Explain one drawback of random sampling." Ah. This was his forté - they had covered this last lesson, and Yuki was brilliant when it came to the qualitative side of things. Essays were his strong point.

So he decided to test Katie. "Any ideas?" He said, pulling his best innocently-confused face.

Katie

Katie froze as soon as the question had left Yuki's mouth. She knew absolutely nothing about random sampling, let alone the drawbacks to it. She started to panic, what if Yuki found out she sucked at math, and he hated her for it? Especially because of the fact that she'd technically lied to him by acting like she knew about math?

Slowly she came back to her senses. She had to at least try right? She couldn't quit now. She had to come up with something.. ANYTHING. Yet she still drew a blank. "Ummmmmmm.." she said, clearly nervous from this whole situation. "I.. I..."

Try as she might, Katie couldn't get the words to come. Finally, she just chose to bite the bullet and reveal the truth. "Idontknow! imreallybadatmathandimadeyouthinkiwasgood." she said in a rapid and nearly incomprehensible mass of words. Finally, she looked at Yuki, clearly afraid of his reaction. "Please don't hate me.." she said after a moment, her voice quiet, loud enough for Yuki to hear, but no one else.

Yuki watched Katie panic and felt a pang of guilt. He knew what it was like to be put through that situation, to feel that fear. To genuinely think that the other person might want you dead for making the tiniest of mistakes.
His fears had been founded back then.

He offered a troubled smile, patting Katie on the head in what he hoped was a reassuring gesture. He found that physical contact normally helped him when he was about to panic. But it only helped from people he knew well. "I don't hate you..." He said, equally softly but putting as much of a reassuring tone into it as he could. "Don't worry. I'll handle this question for the both of us."

And he wrote the answer down, showing Katie his sheet for her to copy.
