“Goodness, I’m just an ordinary little potion-brewer. What are you doing, trying to impress someone like me~?” She didn’t stop him, of course. She never was one to say no to physical contact, particularly from a handsome boy like Orion.

“Honestly, we’re trying to get rid of your thrall, and you just keep trying to aggravate it…” She paused at his sudden outburst. Oh? So this was the game he was trying to play?

She smiled right back at him, unwilling to admit she was slightly miffed he’d moved away. “Oooh. Of course there are dangerous magical plants – there’s a dangerous magical version of everything. If you want to find them, the Forbidden Forest is sweeter than this old place… The whole place is full of monsters, flora and fauna alike. You’re just as likely to be attacked by a vine as a bear. We should be relatively safe up here… watch your step, though. Never know what might bite – or just release some sort of poisonous spore, hmm?”

"Poison spores?"

He quickly tossed aside the Angel's Trumpet reflexively.

"That's a thing? Okay... Geez. Magic is hazardous field."

Orion was back at Bell's side, now even more wary of randomly plucking unidentified magical herbs and flowers. She had said that the monstrous plants were in the Forbidden Forest--because of course they were--but what was to say that a few seedlings of toxic pollen plants had not taken root along the mountain?

"And unpredictable. That's why I stick with the engineering sciences. At least then you can predict what could go wrong and account for it."

He imagined visiting the Forbidden Forest with Bell some other time, perhaps to observe magical wildlife. He then imagined Bell getting into a tussle with some plant tendrils... The thrall kicked in and kicked out the naughty thought.

"Mmph. So... How much longer until we get to this sacred spring? I'm itching to see you brew up the potion. And then use it. And then... other stuff."

For all his supposed curiosity, Orion didn’t seem to be willing to risk much. She knew he was being reasonable, but she still couldn’t’ help but laugh. “It is pretty dangerous, yeah. When you deal with things that’re alive, you have to keep in mind their own wills…”

“Well, sure you can. You can also accidentally blow someone up and have not a clue what went wrong.” Bell was of the opinion that any science was fraught with danger, really. “There’re plenty of dangerous chemicals in the world, right? Think of this the same way, but with plants and such.”

“Mm… we should be there… soonish.” Bell shrugged. “You think I was keeping track? I just know we’re going in the right direction. Though I brought us on a little detour, too…” She bent over for a moment and plucked some of the leaves of the white sage to the right of her. “So I could get some of our ingredients, yeah? Keep a better eye out, tsk tsk.”

“You’re so impatient. Maybe next time I’ll keep you at home, hmm?” She looked to him with a mischievous smile. “So I can have some quiet time.”

Orion stopped when Bell bent over to pluck some leaves, which he assumed were to be used in the mixture. With her back temporarily turned to him, he had the moment to admire her nice behind, and nodded approvingly. It was a move that was immediately followed by another jolt from the thrall. It made his neck twitch and he had to rub the spot for a bit to make it stop. Either his tolerance was making it act differently or the thrall was actively changing to be more annoying because it started to feel like it was moving away from the grey kind of pain that he had liked so much before.

"Hm? Leave me at home?!"

Bell's sly smile was mirrored in Orion's as he reached around her to give her a heart slap on the very same bottom he had been eyeing earlier.

"Nuh uh! From now on, you're not getting any quiet time from me! You just wait until we have that anti-thrall potion made up!"

Ever since their first encounter, Orion had been able to see the mischievous and playful side of Bell. It was tough hiding a side one's self when it was time to get intimate, after all. But he was starting to think he had underestimated just how much of a sneaky fox she could be. Plus, that butt!

Bell jolted as she was slapped on the bum – but managed not to yelp, instead letting out a loud and inelegant snort at Orion’s outburst. “Y’know if you keep seeing her you’ll have to keep coming back for more – and if I decide you’re being too naughty you’re getting none of it, let me tell you!”

But her laugh was bright and cheery, not a trace of actual annoyance in it. “Come on. We’ll likely find the second ingredient just growing around the spring – and we were almost there anyways, before you got distracted.”

A snort may not have been the most feminine or "cute" response from a lady, but Orion would not hold it against Bell. Most people could have excused it as simply being funny and a nice surprise, which would have been true. He actually thought it was more than that, and in fact may have been endearing or even attractive in a way. It was cute and down to earth. Besides, it was not like she was at a dearth of cute and feminine sounds in general. Those just came out at different times.

But as a sign of sportsmanship, he kept his hand on her rear and gave it a nice soothing rub to ease any stinging he might have caused away.

"Clarify: How naughty is too naughty? And ]i\what[/i] exactly won't I be getting any of?"

He do so enjoyed the little back and forth he had with Bell. It was playful and teasing in just the right way. His hand roamed back to her waist as they continued on the last stretch to the sacred spring. At least he hoped it was the final stretch. He was finding it more difficult to keep up the teasing with no pay off, and the thrall was starting to regain strength through the relaxing juice.

"Real talk, Bell. I'm finding it a little harder to choose between the succubus and you. It used to be pretty even, but now~"

He gave her a squeeze to finish his thought.

“Too naughty is whatever I feel like, whenever I feel like it. I’m the one who gets to judge after all, aren’t I? No potion, no kisses, no nothing! Maybe I’ll move away to a foreign country just to stay away from you.”

He wrapped an arm around his shoulder as he put one around her waist. “You and that succubus make an interesting pair, but so do we, huh. And I’m always ready to do science with you, you hear? Of all sorts.”

Before she could clarify what she meant by that they had arrived. The soft sounds of water punctuated their arrival, and she slipped away from him, a gentle and pleased look on her face. “It’s been a while since I’ve been here…” She plucked the purple flowers by the edge of the spring, and kept them carefully separate from the sage she had picked before. “You’ll have to be bear with me, this will take a while. Could you get me part of a tree or something? Something I can make a bowl with. Maybe even a particularly thick branch.”

Bell got quite an devilish look out of Orion with the mention of Delise.

"Heh. Perhaps we could all get together sometime for science..."

Orion was left with his thoughts and the tug of the thrall as they arrived at the sacred spring at last. While she plucked the last of her ingredients, Orion paced around the spring and took it and the surroundings in. He did not know what he expected of something that was called the sacred spring, but he felt a little underwhelmed. Not that he would have told Bell.

It was a simple and very natural spring. A very clean pond of sorts coming out of the mountainside, cascading over smoothed rocks and with exceptionally green and colorful plants all around it. No doubt a testament to the sacred-ness of the water. "Pristine" and "clean" would have been the words to describe it. The water almost looked invisible, like shimmering air itself. On its own it was very peaceful, beautiful, and serene. But compared to what he imagined, it was a little... small.

For the record, Orion had imagined something more Roman-esque. Perhaps some marble pillars or ruins surrounding it, like some ancient civilization had already found it, built a temple around it, then collapsed. He had an active imagination.

Bell's request took him away from his observations, and he went on a quick search for materials. A few snapping and cracking sounds later, he returned with a few thick branches to choose from and a few hunks of bark that could have been used as a bowl or plate.

"Here's the stuff, Bell. Now work your magic. I wanna see how this works."

“Give me a good excuse and I’ll come running.”

She had other things to think about than succubae at the moment, though, and her eyes flickered only briefly to the things he brought. “Wasteful,” she murmured, clearly distracted. “Take only what you need.” But she still took the best one, and after taking her knife from its sheath she began to carve a small mortar out of the base. She took her time with it, working carefully and with little concern to how impatient Orion might be – then she made a matching pestle with which to grind her potion ingredients.

The sage first, set carefully aside from her working area, and then the long, vine-like leaves of the devil’s shoestring, but only after her tools had been washed.

She had often questioned that plant as a child. It was meant to trip up the devil, her mother had explained, and she’d piped up, “But then why don’t we just use string?” She hadn’t understood that it was her mother’s way of explaining the complicated holy properties of the plant. It was little things like that that had made them bicker at times.

She took from her bag a bowl of pure silver, which she dipped into the pure spring water and filled completely, forming a thin meniscus at its rim – this she placed by the edge of the spring as she collected her dishes of ground herbs, one in each hand.

She poured them into the bowl, and picked it up as the water began to mist like dry ice. Then she began to whisper under her breath, in a lilting language Orion had likely never heard before.

“Mother, I give thanks for your years of guidance...”

As she spoke a breeze came through the area, causing her poncho to flutter and her hair to lift just slightly. She took the twine from her ponytail to let it flow in the wind, and then closed her eyes in something resembling prayer.

As she spoke and mist settled by her feet Orion would feel, unmistakeably, a presence, though of what he might not know – it was as if he was being watched, maybe judged.

If he was careful he might hear his name in her mutterings, but they were quiet, and it could be a trick of the ears. In any case, her whispers stopped just as the mist ended and the winds came to a standstill.

Bell crouched by the side of the river, took the mortar bowl she had used to grind the herbs, and procured a cup of water. Then she dripped in a few drops of her potion, which was clear now, almost indistinguishable from the original spring water.

She stood up and held the cup out to Orion, her hitherto serious and almost reverent expression breaking into a cheery smile. “Here you go, give that a try, could you?”

Orion was almost compelled to make a come back at Bell about the wastefulness of his gatherings. It never came and he remained silent when it was clear that Bell had entered a much different state of mind than earlier, one of concentration and focus. She was working and playing around was out of the picture until she was done. He could definitely respect that, and kept his mouth shut, knowing exactly how she felt. He too often took on the same expression when working on something intense and precise.

He tried to give her room to work, and stayed out of the way whenever she made a movement. Not a sound came from him except the occasional quiet hum as he internalized and analyzed everything she did, sensing that she would not be able to explain herself while she worked.

The method of grinding herbs made sense to him. Keeping them separate felt like a page from cooking or chemistry, in that their joining had to be done at a specific time. Cleaning the tools seemed like a no brainer.

When they were finally mixed, Orion leaned in closer to see what would happen, only to pull back as it began to react and mist.

After so many explanations from Bell, he was beyond wondering what the prayer was used for. No doubt some kind of magical incantation that infused the brew with the necessary effects or something.

The breeze made him do a double take to the area around them, like he was being watched and he started feeling a little concerned with the ritual. Was she summoning something? Was it going wrong? Was the mist affecting his mind?

His concern slowly faded as the ritual ended, but he was still a little on edge. The process had a lot more pomp than he had been expecting. Still, he took the cup and nodded.

"Well, I have to trust you on this, Bell. Here we go..."

With a single throwback, he gulped the water and potion down.
