Eve knew well that Jake seemed to be accident prone. Eve wasn't particularly so, or at least he was tough enough to never show any signs of it. But the look in Jake's eyes and the smile on his face made Eve feel even more embarrassed. He looked away briefly and cleared his throat a bit.
"It has been one of my better ideas, yes. Maybe you should consider doing so too, seeing since you hurt yourself more than I do."
Eve smiled just a bit.

Eve could sense Jake was a bit uncomfortable, or at least Eve was starting to be. He didn't like when his stone was in full view.
As Eve finished he didn't immediately move to cover the stone on his chest. Instead he kept his arms on his sides, trying to seem natural. In truth his heart was beating fast.
Eve looked at Jake when he mentioned the virus, bit curious.
"I did not catch the virus last year, although my former bo-, acquaintance did. Did it do something to your powers?"

It truly was beautiful. Eve had mentioned the stone that was embedded in his chest before but he had never seen it in person. The time that they had been in the secluded alcove, Jake tried not to stare as he thought it would make Eve feel uncomfortable but now that Eve was so close, it was quite beguiling. Light bounced and danced in the red gemstone and Jake couldn't help but allow a glance every now and then, though he didn't make it obvious.

The virus that plagued the island last March was one hell of an experience. Jake never wanted to feel as bad as he did then. "Oh, you know, the average symptoms: dizziness, a sore throat, headaches, inability to control shifting." He let out a single laugh as he joked. Of course, your everyday virus did not affect people the way this one affected the supernatural. "It was horrible. I had patches of fur and my entire leg was a wolf's for days at one point." Those days were stressful when it came to walking and wearing pants. He had heard that some people were just naturally immune to the virus so he presumed Eve was among those people. Jake wished he had that blessing.

Eve knew Jake was looking and he tried to seem like he didn't care. But it took all Eve's willpower not to squirm or cover the stone. The stone made him incredibly self-conscious, maybe because of the same reason as the soul flame earlier. It was an intimate part of Eve, the part that made him immortal and so powerful. So letting other people see it felt like letting them see a deeper part of Eve. Especially with Jake that felt really overwhelming. But Eve did a good job at hiding his reactions.

Eve nodded as Jake told him about the virus, not laughing when he joked. Eve had heard what the virus had done to the siren that had been his former lover. He had died from the virus. Eve felt incredibly glad Jake had not.
"It sounds like you went through a lot. But I am glad you survived."
Eve smiled slightly and exhaled a sigh. He turned and leaned his back against the rock. He could feel it was a bit cool.
"I regret slightly I did not suffer from the virus. I cannot feel your pain."
Eve said, mostly to himself, as he looked out to the sea.

"Yeah, me too. It really sucked," Jake said as he went over to retrieve his t-shirt, slipping it over his head. His body had been on show for longer than he was comfortable with so he dressed again. He had never seen an illness affect as many people as it did but that was the island for you - always the unexpected.

"It's not your fault you didn't get sick." He laughed slightly. Why would he regret having full health? Sometimes, he thought that Eve tried to be more empathetic with people than even Jake could be with his empathy. It was a caring trait that he admired. There was comfort in the knowledge that he cared enough to try and understand what people were going through. Jake joined Eve with his back against the cliff face, though he slouched down until he was sat in the sand with his knees huddled in. His arms were wrapped around them as he looked out over the ocean, the sun slowly descending into the watery horizon.
