Clement thought on this for a few moments, letting his drink warm his hands until the heat was too much. He set the cup down and replied, "In my case, I definitely chose work that makes me feel fulfilled. But one cannot discount that one has to eat and keep a roof over one's head."

Clement could tell that Claudia was definitely indecisive, as so many young people were. He remembered those days. But how much worse it must be now, with so many choices of life paths. Too many choices could be paralyzing, as he had learned over the centuries.
"The thing about life is, it is about balance. You'll only regret your life if you base you happiness on what others think you should do with it."

"You're lucky you like your job," Claudia said with a warm smile. "It's sad to think that, um...artists for example--actually, the main example--really love making art, so they go to school and spend all this money for it, but when they get out of school...It's so hard making enough to support yourself. You can't even guarantee people will buy your work or commission you consistently enough to even live. It's even worse when everyone wants to be an artist. Then there are so many artists already out there that you can't even get a foot in the door because a thousand other feet are in the way. They picked a career that they loved, but they can't even support themselves with it."

She started to feel a bit sad just talking about it, and she mentally cursed at herself. Did she really want to remember her very first date as sad? No way! She wanted this date to be super fun and unforgettable, but how. . .

Claudia listened and nodded with what he said. She reached out with her black cat sweater sleeve and started dabbing up any coffee droplets on the table. "I totally agree, do what you want. I feel...like I know what'll make me happy, but it's kind of hard to base a job around that. Flowers are nice, though. They're so pretty and full of life, don't you think?"

"What made you want to become a teacher, anyways?"

"Oh, I became a teacher because I love learning. But more than that I love sharing what I've learned with others. There's no better profession for me," Clement hummed happily and sipped his tea. It was true. His love of knowledge was the thing that led him to become a lich in the first place. But even as violent and unpleasant as that experience had been, it hadn't quelled his thirst to know more.

"But segueing back. I think a flower shop would be lovely. But I also see your point, with the anecdote about artists. It's a difficult area to break into, especially when so much of it is subjective. You might think a painting of yours is the most beautiful thing you've ever made. But that doesn't matter if the people who might purchase it don't agree."

Clement reached out his hand across the table and grasped the back of one of Claudia's. He gave her a warm, sincere smile and a single nod. "You seem like a bright, dedicated girl though. I'm sure that you'll do just fine in whatever you decide upon."

"That's very admirable. Your students must really enjoy having someone who loves their job." Claudia could only imagine the passion Clement must have put into his work; teachers who loved what they did usually turned out to be some of her favorite teachers she'd ever had the pleasure of learning from. "You know, I know that teachers and professors have some of the greatest stories about their jobs. I want to hear one of yours! Like...What's the craziest thing that's ever happened while you were teaching?"

"I think so too!" Her eyes lit up, and she spoke excitedly. "I keep having this dream that it's Valentine's Day and I'm in the shop, arranging a beautiful bouquet of flowers for someone to give their wife with the classic heart-shaped box of chocolates. To see all the different faces when they're falling in love or making up...I bet it's amazing."

"Then I start to remember this scene from a romance where this florist just fills the main character's apartment with bouquets of her favorite flowers that he arranged himself. He'd ordered out the whole city!
It was funny, but I thought it was incredibly sweet and romantic."

Claudia's eyes widened and her brows shot up when she felt Clement's hand over hers. She could feel her cheeks and ears growing hot already. Never had she ever held hands with a boy before--okay, it wasn't really holding hands, but it was close enough, right??

A smile lit up her face. "Thank you!" she said a bit breathily, her eyes flickering between his and trying not to get lost in them, as cheesy as that sounded.

"...Is this the part where I playfully smack your arm and say that I'm not a girl, but a young lady?" She laughed, glad that she could at least loosen up a little.
