Kealani was nervous. Super nervous. She was not a public speaker, but she'd been convinced to join this campaign, and she'd be damned if she didn't go all in.
She brought her speech written on a few sheets of paper up with her to the podium. She was trembling a little as she looked at all the faces in front of her. She cleared her throat and looked down on the words at the paper, reading from them slowly.
"I know most of you don't know me personally. I'm Kealani Morncer, leader and founder of Mystique a club dealing in music and choreography. A few of you..." She breathed out, then dropped her papers to look up and meet the eyes of those in the crowd.
"A few of you may know me from the gigs I play. When I started Mystique, there were so many other clubs that could have overshadowed me. They had primarily the same ideas. They wanted to be big. They wanted to do the things I have managed to do.
"I started Mystique, and I wanted it to be great. So I went for it. I threw myself at every opportunity. I failed,
a lot but then I didn't. I climbed those failures to success, and now I'm there. But I haven't stopped.
"You may wonder why I'm bringing this up. It's simple, really. That's what I plan on doing here. I am ambitious, but what's more, I'm good at organization and keeping people and things in order."
Kealani walked out from around the podium to stand utterly center stage. She felt vulnerable out here, with everyone able to see all of her, but somehow she felt stronger too. All these eyes on her. She had people's attention. She could keep it. She exhaled and continued.
"I've had Mystique for a few years now, and I'm confident others could vouch for all of you that I singlehandedly got my group the gigs we wanted. I handled the money. I saved and thought up all the ideas and steps we'd need to follow through with to get where we wanted to go. If I managed that all on my own, imagine what I could do with a great team."
She held the microphone tighter and walked back behind the podium and glanced down at her paper. She'd deviated so far from it now, but maybe something was salvageable.
She lifted it and skimmed the final sections of it. Nothing.
"I have never cheated. My crawl to the top was slow and pathed by my own drive. I'm passionate about this council. Sure, I'm terrified, but I want the best for this school. I have lived here all my life and seen the injustices of the passing seasons.
"When Malivani spoke about the discrimination toward Demons, Fae, and all those other nighttime horror creatures we hear about, I have seen those things first hand." She motioned to her Arachne face and body, smiled bitterly. "I have faced a few of those things.
"It wasn't my original platform to bring any of that up. Someone had beat me to it, but I agree with all of her points nonetheless and seeing as we're not running for the same position I don't mind standing up here and bringing up the prejudice I too have faced.
"Getting to the top and being treated like I'd
earned it was no easy task. People thought I was a cheat. A liar. People often mistake me for a lust Demon, and while there is nothing wrong with that, the way I'm treated when others think I might be a lust Demon is... not okay."
She breathed out, saw her time running low and said, "Please. I urge people to stand up and tell their own stories. I'll be sticking around after my speech to talk with anyone who has any questions or comments."
And then Kal set the microphone back and walked off stage, feeling stiff and nervous. All eyes on her.
