The courtyard has been set up for elections, although the seats are only half full. Any interested candidate is free to book a time to make a speech on the afternoon of the 13th - 19th, explaining their position to interested students. While not mandatory for those running, a clear place to state your platform is a huge boon, and the majority of candidates are taking advantage of it.

The small stage has a podium and a few decorations for those wishing to give their speech and tell the school where they stand on academic issues plaguing the island.

(Please only post once in this thread with a character giving a speech. Do not roleplay in this thread outside of speeches. Mind you that a speech doesn't have to be a short post at all. Go wild!)

First up to bat and Alma was anything but nervous. She was bright and beautiful and her fangs were sharpened. She thought about that thing she had read online once a while back. Stop running from who you are. Confront it. Embrace it. And go for it's fucking throat, like a real fucking vampire. It had more or less been her mantra over the past month or so, as she prepared for the elections. It gave her a weird confidence that was different from what she got from her aura.

Up at the podium, Alma inhaled slowly and opened her eyes, letting her pupils elongate to their more natural goat-like shape. "My name is Alma Malivani. A lot of you might have never noticed me before last December, when I kind of got shoved into the spotlight."

Everyone knew at this point. She'd attacked another student; bitten him. And his blood had messed her up bad enough to put her in the hospital.

"I'm a Hellion, specifically a child of Asmodeus. When my last birthday passed, I got an aura that affects not only myself but those around me. It lowers people's inhibitions. My aura, when combined with others, has gotten me in trouble several times since it popped up."

Alma took a moment to pause. She was nervous now, but the static in her head wouldn't let her stop. "The one you all know about was when I attacked the other student. But the other-"

Alma had thought long and hard about this. The thought had come to her after her conversation with her brother had gone badly. After she realized he didn't actually care, that he wasn't actually sorry for what happened, and frankly that it seemed like he'd do it again in a heartbeat. Alma didn't pause or stumble at all as she continued.

"-my twin brother, who has an attraction aura, took advantage of me. I... was really hurt, but I decided that I wasn't going to shut down or let what happened break me. I was going to fight to make sure that no one ever got hurt the way I did again."

At this point Alma held her left arm above her head, showing off the thick banded, dual colored bracelet on her wrist. Not the government sponsored one. Hers. "You might have seen these bracelets floating around. These are aura identification bracelets of my own design. I made them after my assault and started passing them around. Explained to people their responsibility to warn others of the effect they might have on them. It opened dialogue with so many people from so many walks of life. The government even took notice and put out new legislation about auras. But I want to do more."

Alma now put both of her hands on the podium, her fangs extending and her wings and tail flexing almost menacingly behind her. She was past the worst of it, and any remnants of the lump in her throat were long gone.

"I want to be your student council president, Starlight Academy. Because there is injustice on this campus and on this island. Bigotry that has no place here, against Demons and Fae and nearly every other group seen by the Narrow Reality as 'evil'. Bigotry that leads to violence, as we've seen far too much in the past year. We have to take a stand. We have to say 'No. We are not our bloodlines or our species or our powers. These things do not solely define us. We are people, dammit, and we demand respect!'"

Alma's hands slammed down on the podium once before she calmed down, standing up and coiling her tail around her waist like a belt. She gave a wide, fanged smile to the crowd in front of her.

"So please, fight with me, for our school and our community."

Kealani was nervous. Super nervous. She was not a public speaker, but she'd been convinced to join this campaign, and she'd be damned if she didn't go all in.

She brought her speech written on a few sheets of paper up with her to the podium. She was trembling a little as she looked at all the faces in front of her. She cleared her throat and looked down on the words at the paper, reading from them slowly.

"I know most of you don't know me personally. I'm Kealani Morncer, leader and founder of Mystique a club dealing in music and choreography. A few of you..." She breathed out, then dropped her papers to look up and meet the eyes of those in the crowd.

"A few of you may know me from the gigs I play. When I started Mystique, there were so many other clubs that could have overshadowed me. They had primarily the same ideas. They wanted to be big. They wanted to do the things I have managed to do.

"I started Mystique, and I wanted it to be great. So I went for it. I threw myself at every opportunity. I failed, a lot but then I didn't. I climbed those failures to success, and now I'm there. But I haven't stopped.

"You may wonder why I'm bringing this up. It's simple, really. That's what I plan on doing here. I am ambitious, but what's more, I'm good at organization and keeping people and things in order."

Kealani walked out from around the podium to stand utterly center stage. She felt vulnerable out here, with everyone able to see all of her, but somehow she felt stronger too. All these eyes on her. She had people's attention. She could keep it. She exhaled and continued.

"I've had Mystique for a few years now, and I'm confident others could vouch for all of you that I singlehandedly got my group the gigs we wanted. I handled the money. I saved and thought up all the ideas and steps we'd need to follow through with to get where we wanted to go. If I managed that all on my own, imagine what I could do with a great team."

She held the microphone tighter and walked back behind the podium and glanced down at her paper. She'd deviated so far from it now, but maybe something was salvageable.

She lifted it and skimmed the final sections of it. Nothing.

"I have never cheated. My crawl to the top was slow and pathed by my own drive. I'm passionate about this council. Sure, I'm terrified, but I want the best for this school. I have lived here all my life and seen the injustices of the passing seasons.

"When Malivani spoke about the discrimination toward Demons, Fae, and all those other nighttime horror creatures we hear about, I have seen those things first hand." She motioned to her Arachne face and body, smiled bitterly. "I have faced a few of those things.

"It wasn't my original platform to bring any of that up. Someone had beat me to it, but I agree with all of her points nonetheless and seeing as we're not running for the same position I don't mind standing up here and bringing up the prejudice I too have faced.

"Getting to the top and being treated like I'd earned it was no easy task. People thought I was a cheat. A liar. People often mistake me for a lust Demon, and while there is nothing wrong with that, the way I'm treated when others think I might be a lust Demon is... not okay."

She breathed out, saw her time running low and said, "Please. I urge people to stand up and tell their own stories. I'll be sticking around after my speech to talk with anyone who has any questions or comments."

And then Kal set the microphone back and walked off stage, feeling stiff and nervous. All eyes on her.

Ven was not nervous.

That's not to say Ven was confident. Confident would imply that Ven thought he was going to walk up on stage and totally kill it. It was more or less that Ven was tired, his head hurt, he wanted another coffee, and he realized that he could be helpful to other people whether he was on the council or not. He was dressed in his uniform and his long hair was brushed away from his face. He was piercing free today, too, but there was still a little trace of black eyeliner beneath his eyes. The effect made him look strangely serious rather than awkwardly goth.

He stepped up to the podium and lowered the microphone so he could actually speak into it. This was a downside of being short.

"Hello everyone, my name is Thievenne Paget, but some of you may know me as Ven or Moon Moon. I served this last semester on the student council," he said. He offered a smile. "You may also know me for my tendency to be found sleeping in random areas of the school. I can assure you that when I'm asleep, I'm dreaming of doing the best that I can do for my fellow students."

Ven leaned forward, propping himself up on his elbows.

"I came to this school as a new student and my goal for the last year was to increase resources for those new students who came in and might be experiencing new kind syndrome," he said. "The magic here is wonderful, but it can also be terrifying, and i wanted to provide a safe place to help promote positive mental health practices. The "my powers suck" support group was born from that."

Ven took a deep breath and exhaled away from the microphone. It went a long way in stopping the WHUSHH sound that might normally follow. He ran a hand through his dark and then returned his elbow to the podium. He looked tired. He looked like he’d done this before and he was going to do it again and again and again until it worked.

Ven was a wolf, it was true, but he often came across more like a dog. He was tenacious. He was going to sink his teeth into something and latch on until the other side relented.

He eyed the crowd.

“Starlight, I was raised human. I didn’t know about my powers until they blossomed and took me by surprise. Until I came here, magic was a thing in books. My story is not uncommon. We’re all living a version of this story, whether we were raised in magic or found out about it later, we’re living a fairy tale. With the help of the council, my goal for this term is to continue to work on resources for helping students new to the island adjust and to help us find the mental and physical support we need to make sure we have the power to write our own happy endings.”

He folded his hand as if he was opening a book.

“As a member of student council, my goal would be to make sure your stories are heard. My goal has nothing to do with what I need as a student. My goal is to make sure that what you need is heard, understood, and delivered to the people who can make change happen,” Ven said.

He was becoming more passionate now as the end of his speech wrapped up.

“Starlight, I want to stop dreaming of change and see it happen. You stories, each and everyone, matter. Let me help make sure that you have the tools and resources you need to reach that happy ending.”

He gave a sheepish grin and said, “So that’s it, Starlight. Vote ‘Ven’ for happy endings.”

He was oblivious to the innuendo he’d just put there.
