Danger'd learned a long time that at least partial honesty was best in all situations, so he told the truth... Sort of. "My 'family' and I were merchants. We'd buy things keep them, then sell them to anyone who had a good price to offer. It was kind of the only way that we could make it through life. That book paid for my tuition here." he shrugged, reaching over her shoulder to place another book that he'd picked up on the shelf.

As he removed his arm, he brushed her shoulder slightly, making eye contact with her for a moment, before breaking it and turning to pick up another book. He opened it, paging through, though he wasn't looking at the words, simply schooling himself into control, since he was used to people asking suspicious questions, and he usually challenged them, being extremely cocky, and living up to his nick name, but he knew that wouldn't be a good thing here.

This time, when he turned to face her again, he simply held the book out for her to take, an honest smile on his face.

Serenity nodded softly.
"I see... My family..."
She couldn't remember much of them. It was just a blur of fire and weapons and cold. She looked up as he put the book away, and she caught his eye. Though she didn't mean for it to show, there was a great longing for something she never had, the look in her eye that showed she had never been held by warm hands, never heard her mother's soothing voice, and that she probably would never. The eye contact broke.
Serenity smiled back at James and took the book from him. She frowned as she read the title then looked up. It's place was near the top of the bookshelf. Her wings, which had been folded down to her back, now potruded out of her hair. The holes in the back of her shirt were covered by her hair, anyway, so no one would wonder why they were there. The wings hummed softly as they flew back and forth rapidly to keep their owner in the air. Serenity put the book in it's place, then she floated back down.

Danger raised an eyebrow as Serenity flew up to the shelf then back down. No other feature changed. He didn't frown, or smile, his eyes didn't change, he just raised his eyebrow. He may have powers, but he wasn't used to other people having powers. Suddenly he was aware that there might be more to this girl then met the eye. And that look was almost haunting. And similar to how he felt times. And that unnerved him. Not that it showed.

He turned away from her again to pick up another book, paging through it as well, this time remaining with his back towards her as he forced himself to stop. This girl was odd. And her effect was odd. He wanted to hug her and tell her that everything was going to be ok. That, was not ok. He couldn't allow himself to be so weak. Actually looking at the book, he read the title, and blinked. "This is a really depressing book.." he observed. He'd also read this one in it's original language, and had wound up feeling depressed for days until they raided another ship. He didn't really like this book, and had been glad to sell it. He turned back to her, eyes still the same as they had been the whole way through.

((PM me, I need to ask you something... XD Bewaaaaaare...))

Serenity stopped. Her back was to him, so he couldn't see that her hands were shaking. Even if he did, he probably wouldn't know why.
"Sometimes... Sometimes life is very depressing. Escpecially when you think of something that has happened in your life that makes you pale."
She was quoting this from the introduction of the book. But whenever she had read the entire thing, she couldn't catch anyone's eye for a week. Her face wasn't red, but pale. She couldn't help it. The past made her shiver. Flashes of the sea, screaming, weapons clashing, pain. Cold. Laughter.
Serenity shook her head to clear it of such thoughts.

Danger had almost finished paging through the book as he listened to her quote the book, and almost closed it. Before he did, he found a piece of paper in it. Curious, he opened it, and froze. He blinked, placed the book back on the table, and inspected the drawing closer. It was his ship. There was no mistaking that mast. And then the words over top, "Victory for The Lagoon!" that was the name of his ship.

He mouthed a curse, closing his eyes and getting himself under control before turning to Serenity, features schooled into a true, honest curiousity. "This is a good drawing. Far as I know, people can only draw that well if they've seen it... Not to seem forward.. but... um... where'd you see this ship?" his eyes flicked to the paper, then back up to her face, offering it to her to inspect it more. It had her name in the bottom right hand corner, so he knew that it was hers.

((I'm gonna change it up a bit...))

Serenity looked at the sheet of paper.
"It's the only thing I remember of my past. There was a pirate ship next to ruins, and everyone was screaming that. I... I think me and my guardian were escaping from the ship the was destroyed... Then..."
She remembered a part that she couldn't remember before.
"There was a boy... He wasn't much older than me, but he tried to kill me. He probably didn't think anything of it. Lucky, my guardian hit him, so he missed me, but only by a hairs width. We escaped in the smoke, and we knew the only way out was too fly, so we did. That boy... He... Wait, why do you want to know?!" she asked, fear glinting in her eyes for a moment.

As Danger listened to Serenity's story, his face never changed from the honest curious look. He'd learned a long time ago to never let your true emotions show through. Slowly he allowed his face to change to compassion for her situation, covering the thoughts that ran through his head.

He remembered that day. He'd seen the girl with wings and was busy being amazed with the beauty of fairies (or so he thought she was at the time), when the Captain himself told him to go kill her. It'd scared him, but he'd been more worried about what would happen to him if he didn't than killing a fairy. He'd drawn his little sword and gone towards them. But he didn't want to kill her. He stood there sword in hand, staring. He'd stayed still for long enough for her guardian to hit him, and he'd almost killed her as he fell to the ground. He'd hesitated and almost killed her anyways. The captain had had him whipped for that one. He still had the scars across his back.

Her questioning why he wanted to know brought him back to the surface and he searched her face for a moment, recognizing the glint of fear in her eyes. "I.. think I saw the ship once." he fibbed, making eye contact with her, no body language, or facial movements to show that he was lying. He was good at lying. No one could tell the difference so far. He just hoped she wouldn't be the first.

Serenity's body flooded with relief. She looked down, her face bearing a sad expression.
"That boy... He looked really young. Too young to witness things like that. I know I was. Worst thing is, those pirates... they just... They took my mother. They tried... They held her for ransom and wanted... they wanted our artifacts... I was told they worked day and night to get her back, but... as soon as.... as soon as the pirates got... got the things... they... They killed my mother!
"And... my guardian... my best friend... he was fatally wounded... And so I was left alone... Because some pirates wanted to be rich!"
She sat down in one of the chairs, her hands over her face. She hadn't meant to go on liek that. She just slipped it all out, though she had promised herself she would never speak of it again.

The compassion on his face was no longer faked. He moved over beside her and placed his hand on her shoulder. Had she not sat down, he would have drawn her into a hug, but instead, he knelt beside her chair. "That's terrible." he said, his voice a bit husky.

He knew what she didn't. And that was that he, the captain, and most of the crew, were planning on giving her back. All it took was a small handful of the crew to be mutinous. They killed her mother. They, in their turn were killed by the captain and crew afterwards. Danger looked down at his hand, allowing the memories to flood back. He'd been so scarred in that month's time. He berated himself. He should have kept his mouth shut. He shouldn't have gotten involved. He could have left and never have been bothered by her.

All the memories he'd burried in his head were coming back. He forced them down.

Serenity lowered her hands, revealing that many tear had slid down her face at the reminder of her dead friend.
"I thought pirates were the ones who had a code, who were respected among each other... Not some bloodthirsty crew of... of..."
She could not think of the right word. Getting up, she brushed off his hand and started putting books away.
"I guess I thought wrong."
