Winter began to lose its grip on the earth, snow ceasing to fall and the temperature slowly rising. Soon, animals would come out of hibernation and new sprouts would begin to grow out of the ground. But as much as Lucia awaited the coming of spring, it was still undeniably winter. She still had to stomp through piles of snow to get back to her dorm after school. Her only motivation in these freezing months? The image of a warm bed and a cup of hot cocoa waiting for her at home.
A breeze drifted her way, bringing with it a slight chill and...something else. As she pulled up her scarf, she recognized the faint sound of a melody in the air. Her footsteps slowed and she tilted her head to the side. Music in the courtyard was unusual enough, especially during this time of the year, but the sound had a certain quality that marked it somehow different from a usual song or piece of music.
The cocoa could wait. Her feet turned and began on their course towards the curious sound.
Lucia followed the music. It got softer here. Louder there. What instrument was it? Why did it sound oddly familiar? Where was it coming from? Soon it became easier to pick up the little details in the music. It got higher here. Lower there. What song was this? Had she heard it before? It was coming from here!
Reaching a small clearing, she looked up to see the source of the song. There was a young man sitting in the tree, holding a harmonica to his lips. Out flowed the clear and blissful tune.
