She just brushed the sad remarks and depressing talks under the rug and moved on, though she did smile when he touched her knee.

She folded her legs under her, her chair positioned super close to Lochlann’s. She wiggled around again. “What you don’t want to?” She looked at him, smiling as big as ever with her huge innocent eyes staring into his predatory ones. “You can be captain if you waaant” she teased, winking again.

He seemed to zone out for a moment, staring at her. She stopped and went silent for a moment to stare back at him. She wondered what that sort of facial expression and action… or lack of action really meant. She wondered if he was okay, but didn’t ask. “I guess it could be cool. I figure it’s possible. I did some tricks on the side of my dad’s boat once.” Of course she got in deep shit and had fallen off the side of the boat but… she was sure it was possible. She peered at him curiously. He was sure having random bouts of strangeness all of a sudden.

She had to ask. “Are you okay? Did I say something wrong?” she tilted her head, brushing a stray bit of hair behind her ear. “Yeah I wasn’t bad with them. I didn’t have my own though and I never really had to take care of them.” She giggled sheepishly. “Just kinda rode them when my dad went out on his horse.” It seemed strange to her that his family were into horses but couldn’t pay for college. Weird, but she brushed it off.

“Not a fan of green. I mean, to her credit my dad liked green the neon was really the problem.” She smiled, listening to his story, giggling the whole way though. “That’s crazy. How did he think that would work?” she smiled, shaking her head. “I don’t think my mom was ever so dumb as to pint the carpet. She did try to enter me into a beauty pageant when I was a kid though. All the moms there were super crazy though and this lady started yelling at us and theeen… we went home.”

She gave him half a frown. “Why not? Were you any good at it?” So innocent. So clueless.

It felt nice talking to someone honestly and remembering fun things about the past, even if the past was sometimes very very painful. Apparently for both of them. She looked at her hands in her lap and smiled contentedly. Contentment is a wonderful thing that most people take for granted.

Lochlann took a sip of his drink.

Mistake.

“What you don’t want to?” She looked at him, smiling as big as ever with her huge innocent eyes staring into his predatory ones. “You can be captain if you waaant” she teased, winking again.

He choked on it, trying to swallow it before her burst out into laughter, because that was the only appropriate response he would have. The other ones included pick-up lines and he took them and stomped on them in his head. He patted himself on the chest until he cleared his throat.

"Oh god no, wait...do I get to tell people to swab the poop deck if they're bad?" he made this weird noise that was probably a guys equivalent to giggling.

He arched his eyebrows in interest at the boat comment.

“Are you okay? Did I say something wrong?”

Shit. She'd noticed. Lochlann shook his head, trying to root himself firmly in the here and now. He didn't know how to say You're very cute and I'm thinking of you in inappropriate ways, which is not good for my heart due to the medication I'm not to not make me a murderous sex-machine and everytime you look at me with those huge eyes I want to kiss you hard, so he shrugged.

"Sorry, no, it's not you. It's never you," he said, and he went to brush her hair away at the same time she did, so he accidentally touched her hand instead. He jerked his hand back and set it on the table. "I'm just tired, and its taking a toll on me. Hit me if I do it again--I'll probably fall off the chair."

He grinned and hoped it smoothed everything over. He was tired, though, but he felt good and didnt want it to stop.

“Yeah I wasn’t bad with them. I didn’t have my own though and I never really had to take care of them.” She giggled sheepishly. “Just kinda rode them when my dad went out on his horse.”

"I lived on a farm," Loch said, "I spent a lot of time caring for horses. and Sheep. I was really good with the sheep.

“I don’t think my mom was ever so dumb as to pint the carpet. She did try to enter me into a beauty pageant when I was a kid though. All the moms there were super crazy though and this lady started yelling at us and theeen… we went home.”

He grinned again, laughing at the idea. He said, "I'm sure you would have won, though. Oh man, it was a disaster. We had to remove all the carpet, and it stained the floors, too. It looked terrible. You've never seen something so bad before, trust me. "

He gathered up their garbage and tossed it in a nearest bin, taking a look at the darkening sky. It was a little bit later than he expected. He'd lost more time today than he thought.

“Why not? Were you any good at it?”

It took him a minute to answer her question. "I was very good at it. There was really no competition."

He offered his arm out to her. "Its getting late. Can I walk you back to your dorm? I've got a hot date with my mattress and the back of my eyelids tonight and I've got a paper to write yet."

That was a lie. He had a hot date with a cold shower.

She started laughing at his ridiculous question, then almost died of hysteria when he made his little giggle. For a few moments she had to lean hard back into the chair to prevent from falling out of it. “Oh my god, haha, you’re so weird.” She rubbed her eyes a little to rid herself of the little tears forming from the laughter. Weird was an understatement. But she sorta liked weird, at least she thought she did. She knew she what she knew of his personal brand of weird at least.

She seemed surprised that he reached out and touched her but straight out jumped when he jerked his hand back like he’d been stung. Her cheeks darkened and she looked away from him, his awkwardness making the situation a hundred times more awkward than it had to be. He was so confusing. She peered at him curiously for a moment longer before moving on without giving him a response. Why would she hit him? She rolled her eyes unintentionally, looking away as soon as she realized she had. She know that it tended to piss people off when she did that even though she didn’t exactly mean it the way most people do.

“You just had sheep and horses there? Did you use the horses to herd them or something?” She had been to ranches and farms, but never really worked a day in her life so she really didn’t understand. She seemed genuinely interested in. She had to refrain from expressing how cute she thought he’d be caring for fluffy little baby sheep.

She winkled her nose at him giving him a half-sour face, half smile before simply laughing at his rendition of the memory. Her smile faultered a little when he said he was good at swimming even though he had quit. She looked a little confused. Come to think of it, a lot of what he said or didn’t say confused her.

But that was okay. She was a little sad that their meeting had to come to a close, but it’s not like she could allow herself to be surprised. She didn’t know his life or what kind of responsibilities he had. She hopped up, swinging her bag over her should and grinned at him before taking his arm. “Alright, I guess. But you know a Captain shouldn’t abandon his first mate.” She giggled, trying to play off how forced and weird that joke was. She was over the moon at this moment. As soon as he said it was time to go she was brainstorming ways to ask if it would be okay to hold his arm or hand. When he offered it to her it was like an anxious bubble popped leaving nothing but a warm smile.

She stared into space for a long moment silently before smiling up at him again. “Hey are you doing anything like… um… Saturday or Friday after class? We should go on our first pirate adventure, after all we cant be pirates unless we go adventuring.” She felt extraordinarily stupid. That was the stupidest way EVER IN EXISTENCE to ask someone to hang out with you again. She turned her head down and squeezed her eyes shut, cursing herself.

“Oh my god, haha, you’re so weird.”

And then she rolled her eyes and gave him some signals that Loch found confusing at first, but he was a predator so he thought like one. They didn't seem to indicate danger, so he stored them in the back of his mind. He'd re-play this conversation about a hundred times when he was lying awake tonight.

You just had sheep and horses there? Did you use the horses to herd them or something?”

Loch was in a tricky situation, but for completely mundane reasons. "We used the horses for plowing, and we kept the sheep away from our fields. We had pigs after a while, and chickens, too, and right before I left we were supposed to be getting a few cows. We were lucky to live in an area that we didn't have to worry about a lot of natural predators, so we sort of just let the sheep do their own thing. Watching them was really an excuse to take a nap, sort of."

Though Loch didn't have good concepts of time, age, or money, he did understand social structure. He was a herd animal after all, and his last experiences with school had taught him never, ever to talk about his family life. If he admitted that they didn't have electricity, people raised eyebrows. His parents had finally gotten a generator when his brother was able to tinker with it, but for the most part, Loch's human life had the bare minimum. He didn't know why he felt embarrassed by it, so he tried to gloss over this fact.

He was happy with how she jumped up and took his arm. There was no awkward moment with it, although truthfully Loch never had an awkward moment that didn't work out to his advantage. Even the accidental touch before was swept away when she linked her arm with his. It gave him goosebumps and he couldn't stop grinning.

“Alright, I guess. But you know a Captain shouldn’t abandon his first mate.”

"A captain should always go down with his ship," he joked with her. "Unless the ship is boarded by zombie sharks, in which case it's survival of the fittest babe.

“Hey are you doing anything like… um… Saturday or Friday after class? We should go on our first pirate adventure, after all we cant be pirates unless we go adventuring.

Now this...this surprised Loch. He was usually the one to ask a girl out, and he liked this change. His green eyes flashed.

"I'll tell you what," He said, heading out off the grounds to take the round-a-bout way back to the dorms, anything to steal a few extra minutes with her.

"I'll send you a map, x-marks the spot and all of that. Meet me at the X and I'll have a surprise waiting. It'll be a real adventure. With planks and buried treasure and all."

He would take her to the woods, he decided. He wanted to stay as far away from the ocean as he possibly could. Hell, he wanted to stay away from water in general.

He was not going to screw this up.

When they rounded a narrow corner and cut through an alley, Loch started to think that maybe he'd already screwed up. He heard footsteps behind him and by the time he turned his head, it was already too late.

He felt a fist collide with his jaw and spots danced on the edge of his vision. He reeled from the blow and tasted blood.

"Oh, shit," was all he managed to spit out in a glob of blood onto the pavement.

He jerked his head to see if Cassie was okay, leaving himself open for another shot in the process.

She smiled listening passively to his story but let the conversation drop. It seemed like reminiscing time was over for now and it made her a little sad. She liked hearing about his life and she liked talking about her own. She smiled, assuring herself that they’d probably talk it about it again in the near future.

And just like that they were off. She hung from his arm happily, a big dopey smile on her face. Everything so was perfect in that moment. She couldn’t stop giggling when he played along with her silliness, glad that he didn’t find himself seriously weirded out by her. She still needed to learn a lot about conversation. Her mind melted a little when he called her babe. She really almost drooled but forced herself back into the action by suddenly retorting. “Well fine then. I guess I’ll just have to ride into battle on a narwhale and save the whole ship and become captin my. Self.” She stuck her nose up in mock offense. “Then everyone will hate you and we’ll have to maroon you on an island. Zombie sharks? Hah! Child’s play!” She tried to keep her face straight but a stifled giggle leaked out into laugher and she buried her head against his arm for a moment before realizing what she was doing and pulling her face away shyly.

Her eyes lit up as he spoke of their future pirate adventure and she grinned up at him, showing him all of her teeth and nodding. Before she could remind him to keep his voice down so other pirates didn’t know of the location of their booty, there was a rush of footsteps and blurs of color all around her. Some boys pushed her back and lochlann’s arm was suddenly gone from her grip, the same boys that been kicking her bag around in the cafeteria cut her off from him. She instinctively clutched her bag. She felt someone grab for her from behind her and instinctively moved away. She took a few steps to run, then stopped, looking at Lochlann on the ground. She couldn’t just leave him!

The boy who had punched him spit at him. “Yeah it doesn’t feel so fucking nice when it’s YOU getting punched in the face huh *homosexual slur*?” he swung a kick at his head, then at his side while the other three boys laughed and made remarks.

“Wow I cant believe Josh got punched in the face by this *female organ*,” one said. Another laughed in response and the forth looked over at Cassandra.

“It’s the little sluts fault anyway. She’s the one callin' her boyfriend to go after people. HEY. YA HEAR THAT. Your little girlfriend is cheating on you dumbass!” He guy had bent down to yell it right in Lochlann’s face before taking his turn to aim a kick at Lochlann’s side. The other three boy’s laughed

The first one laughed. "Oh like he cares. That's Lochlann, he's probably cheating on her too." The boys all agreed and shared a hearty laugh over it.

It only took a moment for someone to grab hold of her hair and yank her back to where she had been standing less than a second ago. She let out a yelp as she was yanked right off of her feet and before she knew what was happening she was hanging by her hair at someone’s feet. She looked up and saw a girl. A very angry looking girl. She squeezed her eyes shut and clutched at her hair silently.

Loch went to pick himself up from the ground after a blow to his already aching head, but it was too late.

His side ached and he wiped blood from his nose on the back of his arm. His pupils had dilated and his teeth were just a fraction sharper. The air around him seemed thicker, almost tangible, and Loch could imagine peeling off the illusion or glamor or whatever you wanted to call it that made him human.

He could imagine rearing up on his hind legs and coming down hard onto them, kicking and screaming and ripping into their flesh.

He could imagine this, but he wasn't going to do it. Not with Cassandra here. He'd worked too hard, too damn hard, to keep that part of him a secret.

Another kick knocked out some more of his resolve, but when he flew back, he rolled onto his feet and sprung at the nearest attacker, kicking and biting and clawing like an animal. Loch wasn't a skilled fighter, but he made up for it in unbridled rage.

It wouldn't matter though, because there were too many of them, and Loch wouldn't last long against a group that size.

. She let out a yelp as she was yanked right off of her feet and before she knew what was happening she was hanging by her hair at someone’s feet. She looked up and saw a girl. A very angry looking girl. She squeezed her eyes shut and clutched at her hair silently.

"Look at me, bitch," the girl sneered. She wasn't much taller than Cassie, but a pair of spiked heels did wonders for her posture.

The irony of this situation was that the girlfriend wasn't particularly attractive, and she wasn't unattractive, either. She had the kind of face that would never be perfect for the evil-cheerleader or jealous band geek, but instead would make an ideal filler for the crowd.

And Jessie was tired of being filler, tired of tramps like this Cassandra taking off with her boyfriend. It wasn't fair--if she hadn't shown up and gone trouncing past him none of this would have happened and she wouldn't have had to waist her time making sure this bitch learned her lesson.

Jessie just got angrier. She drug a finger-nail down Cassie's cheek, not hard enough to draw blood, but enough to leave a red line.

"You stupid, f'ing bitch! Did you think you could just walk into my life and ruin it? Did you think it was okay to take something that doesn't belong to you?" she let out a sharp laugh and swung her hand back for a bitch-slap. It was a lazy hit, the stereotypical start to girlfights, but Jessie was just biding her time, letting her powers grow.

Her boyfriend could drain someone's energy, but Jessie could generate it, and when she did the results could be...well...explosive.

Lochlann caught the first boy who punched him right in the eye with a finger nail, busting a blood vessel. They both ended up quickly on the ground, the other three boys running over to pull Lochann off, but not before he split the boy’s lip and bit his forearm which he had raised to block his face from any more damage.

The attacker-turned-victim was lucky enough to have three boys there to pull Lochlann off of him so he could scuttle back on all fours, clutching his eye. The other three threw Lochlann as hard as they could backwards and into a wall, looking at him with fear.

They had only intended to teach him a lesson. They hadn’t planned on him staying conscious through the first punch, let alone fighting back. There was fear in their eyes behind the anger as three of them closed in on him again. They turn turns kicking at him, trying their best not to give him a moment to attack them again.

Meanwhile Cassandra had gone stiff, paralyzed by fear as she clutched at her hair. She could feel the adrenaline building up, but it was slow and suffocating. She felt weak and very helpless. Somewhere far off in the world outside of her closed eye lids she heard the girl demand she look at her. She heard it, but didn’t react to it. Tears started to force their way out of her closed eye lids.

She felt a nail dig its way into her skin and cracked her eyes a little. The girl said something and a sharp slap sent her head in the other direction. She had a brilliant idea. If she just… Took off her head… The girl would probably get freaked out and she could get away. Her heart dropped, hearing the vague sounds of the other fight nearby though the fog in her head. Lochlann was still here, there was no way she could do something so gross. He was too pretty, too perfect, too handsome and kind.

There was no way she could use her powers.

She felt very sick. There was probably no way she would be able to get out of this without using them. She would just have to take the beating and hope she could find an opening to run.

Lochlann was better off without her.

He tasted blood and he wasn't sure if it was his own or his attackers because Loch was flung into the wall and then on the ground before he could comprehend. They kicked, kicked, kicked, and everytime he thought he could get onto his feet, he couldn't. At one point, he lunged at someone who kicked him, biting at the skin, but a well-aimed boot to the face stopped him quick.

If this was his first fight, Loch would have passed out a while ago. He was fighting consciousness as it was, and after a certain point his body went limp all on its own. All he could taste smell and breath was blood.

He didn't know if they'd let up if he stopped moving, but he didn't have much of a choice.

——————————————————————————————

"Awww, is the poor little slut going to cry?" Jessie asked, her voice sharp. She was pissed at this girl for not opening her eyes, it was like a spit in her freaking face.

"Whatever," Jessie dismissed her and took a step back. She raised her hands and the lights from the streetlights flickered and died, reappearing in her hands like trapped lightning bugs. Her own eyes went out, replaced with beams like flashlights. She was smirking now, dismissing the voice of someone behind her who said, "Jessie, I don't think this is a good idea"

but she didn't care.

She was done with this bitch.

Jessie raised her hands, pulling in more energy, getting ready to blow them all to hell when--

———————————————
Lochlann wished he had a dramatic come-back line. Something like "It's light's out, bitch" would probably do, but Loch wasn't thinking at all.

If asked about it later, he would have no recollection after being kicked in the face the final time, but somehow, maybe when the boys were distracted with Jessie's bad idea, Loch picked himself up from the ground, two a handful of staggering steps, and then flung himself at the girl.

He was unconscious before he hit the ground.

———————————————

Jessie let out a strangled "oomph!" and fell forward, her blast shooting off down the end of the hallway and exploding in the neighboring exit. After a few moments, there was a startled shout.

"Can one of you get him off me?" she shrieked, glaring in the direction of Cassandra the entire time as if daring the girl to run or make some kind of move.

Truthfully Jessie couldn't stop her if she tried. She was trying to summon up the energy for another blast, but it was hard to concentrate when your legs were pinned beneath a soggy bloody mess.

"Bitch I am going to make you pay for this, mark my words.
