Roomies

New school, new adventures to be had. At least, that's what Aleks kept hearing from the voice she shared her head with. Truth be told, the academy and the island it was situated on wasn't like anything they had seen before. It carried a certain amount of mysticism to it and a sense of ease. It was new, different, and free from any weird looks that they'd get back at their old, normal highschool.

Letting out a sigh as she fumbled for the key to their new dorm room, Aleks unlocked and opened the door, expecting to find a pristine room that had yet to be used. And yet... It appeared to be the opposite.

Pursing her lips for a moment, Aleks stepped into the room, her bag slung lazily over her shoulder. All the while she eyed the peculiar black haired girl they appeared to be rooming with. "... Hey, uh... Roommates, right?" She asked as she entered, trying to start off with a casual greeting.

Hasuka had just finished settling in her room, when she heard someone else walking in.

Turning around, she saw a girl: her appearance seemed to be quite normal, except maybe her eyes... Although Hasuka still knew next to nothing about the world outside of her native island, so for all she knew, having eyes of different colors could be a common trait in the West.

Oh, Konnichi... Err... Good day to you. My name is Hasuka, and I just arrived too. Are you perhaps my new roommate?

She asked, as gently and politely as she could. She was probably going to share her room with this person for a long time, so she wanted to make as good a first impression as possible... Which, of course, meant that someone just had to ruin her plans.

Great, more humans. This whole "school" thing is really starting to get on my nerves, you know...

Commented a harsh-sounding voice, which apparently came out of nowhere.

K-KOHAKUREN!

Yeah yeah, that's my name... Geez, what's up with you and panicking whenever I say anything? Grow a backbone already, miss...

Aleks smiled, at least trying to be friendly. The girl seemed nice enough if a bit too proper for her tastes. It definitely could've been worse though, and she'd suck it up.

"Yeah, that's us." She replied, gesturing to herself. If she was gonna adjust to this "normality" here, she might as well get started now. Before she could think of saying further though, a sudden and rather harsh sounding voice came out of nowhere.

"What the Hell?" Her head twisted side to side, looking for the source, until she looked back at Hasuka. It slowly began click, as her eyes narrowed in suspicion. "Wait-- that voice, is it your's?"

Kohakuren at her rudest and a person who used the royal we and seemed to be utterly puzzled by what was going on. Now that was a recipe for disaster in Hasuka's book.

I... I sincerely apologize.

She tried to say

See, the fact is that...

Woah woah woah now hold on a minute: I am NOT sitting through another exposition sequence! It would be the third in three threads, and with the whole "liquid time" thing, I don't even know if the other two are canon yet! Cannot you do, like, one of those things where the third person narrator says something like "a few time later", and then you say "And so that's how it is"?

W-what are you talking about?

Just do it!

Fine, fine, just stop yelling already...

And thus, a few time later...

... And so that's how it is. I apologize for my companion's rudeness, but she really doesn't like humans, and cannot be bothered to hide her disdain. Although... Given your presence here, am I correct in assuming that you are no ordinary human, either?

Hasuka breathed a sigh of relief: Kohakuren seemed to be content with breaking the fourth wall, and wasn't saying anything more. Maybe now she would have been able to have a normal conversation. When, as "normal" as anything could be on that island, at any rate.

((That was perfect))

Ohhh, we're going into an exposition sequence.

... And once it was all finished and explained properly, Aleks seemed particularly unphazed by what she was just told. Tsk'ing in thought, she moved to move her bag off her shoulder, going to give it a gentle toss over onto the unoccupied bed space in the dorm.

"So you're basically us." She said, turning her full attention back to Hasuka and the rather unfriendly spirit voice. "I share this body with someone else, thanks to my ever-meddling father." She explained. "Her name's Dakota, mine's Aleks. And as long as Kohakuren doesn't try and kill us, I think we'll get along... fine." She hesitated momentarily, considering the implications of rooming with these two.

Yeah, this was going to be a long school year.

W-well technically Kohakuren cannot harm anyone: the body is mine to use, and I am pretty much...

... Leeching off my power.

...Right. Throughout the years, the deal has always been pretty simple: the spirits lend their power to the people of my hometown, and the people of my hometown worship the spirits. But with my hometown destroyed, that is unfortunately out of the window, and now Kohakuren is pretty much a prisoner...

...Which is why you humans have nothing to fear: I am too busy engineering Hasuka's death in order to free myself, I have no time or attention to spare killing others!

I really wish you would stop joking about that.

I did! Now I am saying it for real!

Kohakuren aside, Hasuka was starting to feel pretty awkward: that was her first time meeting someone who truly understood her, and she felt like that was the perfect occasion to finally open up, and maybe create a genuine bond. But this Aleks person didn't seem to have the slightest interest in that, and the Dakota she had spoken of had not manifested herself yet. At this point, Hasuka had no idea of how to keep the conversation going, so she just stood there, desperately looking for something else to say.

Uh...

Well, the conversation was heading down that downwards slope of 'awkwardness'. Aleks let out an idle sigh, moving to sit down next to her stuff on her bed. She hunched forward slightly, resting her elbows on her knees and letting herself rest her chin on her hands.

"Well, I'll let Dakota out now. She wants to meet you and your... voice-y spirit thing." She said, sounding almost somewhat drowsy. It might've not been apparent to Hasuka, but Aleks didn't even wait for an answer to switch places in the driver's seat with her other half. The switch was seamless, Dakota's eagerness to meet them firsthand helping the process along.

And very quickly, it was done. "Hey!" She said, moving to stand up and offer her hand out for a handshake. "I'm Dakota, her 'other half'. Nice to meet you both!"

Hasuka was shocked by the sudden change. That person was now much more energetic and enthusiastic than before: of course, if was a great improvement compared to earlier, but Hasuka couldn't help but be taken aback a bit.

Y-yes, yoroshi... Uh... N-nice to meet you too.

Tsk.

Was Kohakuren sole comment, which Hasuka decided to ignore.

So, you two can switch at will? H-how do you do that, exactly?

She asked, as an attempt to kickstart a conversation. This personality seemed to be much eager to talk, compared to the other, maybe now they could finally bond a bit...

A gentle smile pulled at the edges of Dakota's lips, then replying. "Yeah, we can. It's really not that hard... Like switching a switch?" She mused, figuring that was the closest comparison to someone outside. "Shame you guys can't do something like that... Or is it?" She asked, eyeing her curiously. "I bet Kohakuren would like something like that. Not sure about you, though."

...Like it? Going around in a human body? Eww.

Kohakuren didn't really seem enthusiastic about the idea. But at this point, Hasuka was determined to just ignore her.

But still, there is something I don't understand... I mean, when a spirit was sealed within me, there was a precise goal to it: allowing me to tap into...

... More like "ride on the coattails of"...

... The spirit's powers. I am stronger because of it. But what do you two gain from sharing one body? I-if I may ask, that is.

There was no goal whatsoever to Hasuka's question, just sheer curiosity. Having been trained in martial arts her whole life, she had a very simplistic mindset about powers: you use them to fight. That's all there was to it, as far as she was concerned. She couldn't even begin to imagine that, in other parts of the world, things would be seen very differently...
