Murphy grimaced in concession. He'd heard the argument before, and it certainly had its merit, but he'd never really been able to wrap his head around the idea of 'don't worry about the past'. To him, the past was certain, already set in stone and laid out in a way that could be easily observed, quite the opposite for the future.

"A fair observation, I suppose, but everyone lives their life in their own way aye? And this island is full of people with abilities that often ostracized or set them apart from their peers back home. Yet here they all are, drinking together. It doesn't have to be for the same reason, but simply doing the same thing as a group gives them a sense of comraderie that they may not have had for a long, long time." He watched as a woman with a pair of horns and demonic tail took a haevily inebriated young man out of the bar by the elbow. "Or perhaps they are simply here for an easy lay, who knows?"

An eyebrow was raised when she introduced herself. Well with a name like Sonata Chord it was little wonder she was so entrancing while singing. "Well Sonata, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Would I be correct to assume that you take courses at the academy?"

Changing the subject. Smart.

Sonata swiped some of her green hair onto a single shoulder. It seemed Murphy knew just what he was talking about, so maybe before he came to the island, he had been to place such as a bar or a pub beforehand, of course how could she be able to tell this, innocent Sonata who hadn’t been to a bar before.

She took a large sip of her beer, trying not to sputter at the taste as she clasped her hands on the bar counter. She had of course heard about the miraculous academy that was starlight, but had never thought of perusing an education of a high end job for her life, she just didn’t see the point because if jobs still accepted people regardless of education standards is some places, and others simply because of the appearance and gender of another, there was no choice in the matter

“Incorrect I’m afraid, of course it would be interesting to gain a higher education than the rest, I’d rather get a full-time job right off the bat so the savings will be higher than after education.” She smiled sweetly, smoothing her skirt out as she sat on the bar chair, crossing her legs as if she was interested in pursuing more conversation with the unshaven and wild looking male.

He tilted his head a little curiously. When she brought up full time jobs, things like 'idol' or 'singer' came quickly to mind, but perhaps she was against the stereotype? “Interesting, I suppose you're right about that. What kind of work are you looking for?” He was floundering a bit, he wasn't used to people willingly engaging him in conversation this long and he wasn't sure where one was supposed to go from here. Personal interest? Politics? Weather?

Murphy then noted with some surprise her reaction to the beer. Maybe it was too bitter, or was she unused to drinking alcohol? Surely some guys had bought her drinks before. “If the beer's too bitter we can order ya something sweeter, no sense drinking something you don't like.” he offered, waving the bartender over. “What's your type? Er, type of drink I mean.”

Sonata swung her legs back and forth, her eyes twisting the beer glass around in a circle for a small moment before she looked up. Honestly the female hadn’t thought far enough for where she should work or what to pursue, anything that seemed promising was good enough for her, she really didn’t care or mind, simply put it the process of figuring out what she liked would have been frustrating, althought you’d expect, if you personally knew her before she came to the island, she’s get a job involving caretaking or land animals, but the animals on land were not physically or mentally the same as those under the sea.

“I honestly do not have any career path in mind, it just doesn’t seem to matter too much in what I choose for a job.” She crossed her legs again and adjusted her sitting position so she was sitting quite straight, the male was curious, and acting a little… Ditzy, possibly? Sonata couldn’t put her finger on it.

Her eyes averted slightly at the fact he’d noted her distaste for the beer, and Sonata shook her head quickly. She didn’t want to be a bother, especially since he’d already brought one for her, it’d be such a waste too, she didn’t like that, althought something sweet sounded fantastic.
“No, no…” She nervously giggled, “I’m perfectly fine with this, don’t waste another penny.”

And then, he stuttered over what type of drink he liked, whether that mistake was on purpose or not, Sonata rolled her eyes playfully. “My type of drink is water, if that’s what you mean.” And then, she threw something in hoping for a small laugh or response, trying to be not as dull as it seems she was being, “And type of guy would probably have to be the heroic type, if you know what I mean.” She girl chuckled and took a sip of the bitter drink, pursing her lips at the flavour.

Murphy nodded to the barkeep and ordered a Dark and Stormy before returning his gaze to Viola. "Well, I'm ordering something sweet, you're welcome to try some. If ya like it more, I'll swap ya. Most alcohol's the same to me."

She'd mentioned an affection for hero men, and he chuckled. "Oh, and pray tell me, what qualities would a man have in order to be heroic? Strength? Good looks? Charm?" The way she held herself was almost entrancing; she was old enough to show maturity in a way that most of the college scene failed, but her attitude and demeanor were light enough to remain casually flirtatious.

He noted that she wore no ring on her finger, and no boyfriend hovering around or chasing him off, and he was just buzzed enough to let his guard down and ask personal questions. "So tell me, Sonata. I know that this island caters to those with... gifts of varying sorts. Would it be terribly rude of me to ask what you can do?" He already knew about her voice of course, and with a name like Sonata Chord it could probably be safely assumed that she was musically gifted. Still, couldn't hurt to ask... right?

The siren raised a hand to her mouth and chuckled slightly, while giving up her short lived argument about the male buying another drink, if he’d already got it, then it wouldn’t hurt to try anyway, it was just a drink, and maybe the sweeter ones wouldn’t intoxicate as fast? Sonata didn’t know, it’s not like she went on wikapedia or anything.

Then he brought up her attempt at a joke, the attraction, or the liking of men who have heroic attributes. She pulled her lips into a straight line, while secretly she was in hysterics inside her head, of course it was partly because he added to what she didn’t know how to answer too, that probably didn’t make much sense so just roll with it.

“Well, a heroic man would be… I guess some guy who doesn’t back away, either that or, well, I don’t know.”
The female shrugged her shoulders lightly before glancing at her nails, partly because she’d seen people do that in movies and it seemed to look pretty, then she went back to propping her head on her hands on the bar table. Now he was asking about gifts… What Sonata assumed he was implying was powers and such, if she was reading correctly.

“No it’s a perfectly safe question to ask, mine are pretty plain ones you’ve probably seen on the island in the little time you’ve been here, quite musically based, thought unlike most of my.. Upbringing should I say, I don’t hypnotize others persay, more lull them to sleep, I was actually quite surprised everybody lasted through my… Performance? Maybe the alcohol clouds the power or…”

Yeah, now she was babbling, with that, Sonata shut her lips and lightly coughed into her fist, shaking her head at her idiotic rambling.
“I’m sorry, to put it simply, I’m a siren. But enough about me, if it isn't too much to ask, what about yourself?”

When the drink arrived, Murphy immediately slid it over to the siren. Sleep inducing music powers... it was a curiosity that no one in the bar had been affected, perhaps because of the energetic ambiance of the establishment?

"Me? Well there's not much to tell really. I'm going for my Master's degree in Mathematics up at the academy, like I mentioned I just recently started, and I'm a... hang on... what did they call it... right! I'm a tychomancer. Probability manipulation"

He himself only had a vague understanding of what the title meant. The adviser had gone on and on about predicting outcomes through the observation and alteration of event preceding an event but Murphy had kinda zoned out halfway through. It didn't really change the fact that it constantly screwed him over.

"Really though, manipulation is a strong description for what I can do. I've got an aura of bad luck and the only way I can really interact with it is by making it worse for everyone involved, myself included. Though occasionally it helps out in it's own way." he motioned to the stage lighting that had blown out earlier. "That was probably my fault, sorry about that. Got the crowd quiet though."

Sonata took a sip of the new drink as she listened to the man talk, though some-what concentrating. By now her face was ever so slightly flushed, not that she cared thought. His ability sounded entertaining to say the least, it was unique and probably was on his feet most of the day to get away from misfortunes, based on what he described Sonata’s interest had perked. She twirled her glass around in her fingers, examining the liquid for a few seconds before looking back at Murphy as he told her it was more likely that it was him who caused the electrical malfunction.

Sonta smiled softly, placing her glass on the table and leaning back, twirling her foot around. “It sounds like a special ability, at least for one thing it’s unique.” The girl took another sip, before chuckling. “No need to apologize, they probably wouldn’t have shut up for a girl like me otherwise.”

The girl licked some excess liquid off her lips, before she observed the bar, her eyes looking over every person carefully and quizzically, before an idea popped into her head.
“Do you sing?”

The self deprecation had taken him by surprise. From what he could see she was attractive, kind, and had a beautiful voice. Why wouldn't people shut up to listen to her? He shook his head and quickly moved on, trying not to dwell on the familiar feeling.

"Unique, now there's putting a positive spin on things. I suppose you're right but honestly I'd gladly trade in for any power that didn't constantly mess with my everyday life." he waved to the bar around them, "Fortunately, there are so many people here that my power sorta diffuses unless I actively try to get it to work. Most days I can't even go into a bar without expecting to have drinks spilled on me, have some drunkard assume I was hitting on his girl, or a thousand other things that could go wrong."

Her question caught him completely off guard, "What? Er, I mean yeah, I can sing, though I'm not really good at it. No where near the level you were performing at. Why?"

Sonata leaned onto her hand, letting out a laugh. “Can’t be too bad if you’re still alive, look at it that way and think of every mistake as some wild adventure.” The female took another sip, her mind a little foggier than what it once was when she entered the bar. She swiped a lock of hair from her vision before sitting up from her seat. If the man could sing, then why was he sitting there for. Sonata gestured to the song requesting area.

“If you can sing, than perform a little number for us all here then.” Sonata then coughed into her fist and shook her head, “If you want that is.” The girl placed a hand on her hip, raising an eyebrow at him. It sounded like his life was probably a living hell, yes, but maybe singing or being able to calm down for a night might at least make this night bearable, that was the logic she had come up with, so for now, she was trying to make his night better, she was nice like that… Probably.
