She suddenly knew that the horrible large man that was chasing them would undoubtedly catch up to them if they did not escape quickly. She used all of her strength to pull them both through a passing shadow to a different part of the city. Once they were through the shadow, she took a seat on a nearby bench, then inhaled sharply. She was very out of breathe and exhausted from the tremendous amount of energy she had just used. She finally caught her breathe and looked over at Sabriel, her ears tilted back slightly to show that she was sorry.

"Ok. I grant wishes. Anything that people want, I can give them. Their deepest wishes, theirs. But, I cannot just give them out like candy on Halloween. I can only grant up to two wishes a day, and typically not even that. Depending on the size of the wish, I could actually kill myself granting it. These people, they killed my family, they have chased me my whole life, they want wishes that if I were to grant, I could not live with myself. Complete racial genocides, nuclear wars. They want control, and to them, I am the key." she said, her voice taking on a very depressed tone. Tears welled up in her eyes as she continued to speak. "I was given this power to do good. It was a blessing. But now it is only a curse. I have no family, no friends, no one who loves me or cares. I am all alone. I am incapable of truly loving someone, for fear that tomorrow they will be gone."

She looked down for a moment, wiping away tears form her face before they left her eyes. Then she turned and looked back at him, still ignoring the fact that her arm was in immense pain and was even more bruised than before. "I'll bring you back to wherever you were going. I'm sorry I had to pull you through the shadow..."

They were sinking. It was a familiar feeling, as Sabriel had the same power – and he closed his eyes, feeling safe in the plane that was somewhere between the real world and an abyss of utter darkness. The shadows caressed and embraced him and he felt like he was completely submerged in water – without the being wet factor – until Jessica pulled him from it. It was all gone quickly: the comfort he found in that realm, the whisperings of the shadows, their smoothness and soothing tones.

He watched her as she went to sit down, his head still reeling somewhat. They were in a completely different area of this town, in a place he hadn’t been to. He heard her words, but they didn’t fully hit him until a few moments after she had finished speaking. Sabriel merely stared at her, mouth slightly agape, his ears pressing down against his head finally to match her expression.

He stepped closer to the bench and stood in front of her before sitting down next to her, wrapping his tail around to the side and around him. “I’m sorry,” he said in monotone. “It must be hard having no family or friends. Or anyone that cares.” Despite the fact that he knew first hand, it was the only sympathy he could give her. “You could always… take a different name. Or go to some remote part of the world. Maybe they’d never find you.”

Sabriel shifted somewhat, looking down and away from her so that his hair fell to frame his face. “It’s okay, I’m fine here. Don’t apologize. I have the same power.”

Except I don’t think it has the same affect on us, he finished in his thoughts.

She shook her head. Nothing would ever go right for her. Not a new name or anything would change who she actually was. She would always and forever be Jessica Lei, the wishmaker. She would be hunted down until she was finally forced to grant a wish that would practically end the world as we know it today,a nd there was nothing that she could do. At least she came to terms with that fate.

"Its your power too?" she asked curiously. They seemed to have a lot in common. Cat features, same powers. Hm, maybe she would make some friends here. But then again, with Jessica, nothing was certain, ever.

Sabriel shrugged. He viewed his power as nothing special, not a burden, not a gift - he was just... apathetic, he supposed. "Yeah," he said. "No big deal."

Finally he turned to her, a weak, clearly forced smile upon his lips.

"Hey, you could always wish that you didn't have the ability to grant wishes... couldn't you?" he suggested. "I mean, I don't know if you'd want to go that far, but you could. Or wish that you could go back in your life and stop people from knowing. Or wish for world peace. I don't know." Sabriel lifted a hand and scratched behind his cat ear, sighing softly.
