"Leave me alone!" Jessica screamed as she ran through the alley's of the city, trying to escape the large, brawny man who was pursuing her. He wanted a wish, and she was determined to not give it to him. She ran quickly, hoping she wouldn't trip and fall, because that would be something that she would definitely do. She finally found a shadow and she slipped into it quickly, concealing herself from his view.

"Where are you you little brat!" the man said. He searched the alley frantically, stepping heavily on shadows. He knew of her other power and knew that she would still be able to feel pain if he stepped on her. Finally, a heavy boot landed on her arm, although the man could not see it. Jessica bit her lip and help back a scream. It hurt, and she had heard the bone snap, but she couldn't move. She knew that if she did, she may end up dead. Finally, the man gave up looking, swearing under his breath and promising Jessica that he would find her. After a few minutes, Jessica slipped out of the shadow and curled up on the ground, holding her now limp arm to her chest, beginning to cry.

"Help me.." Jessica whispered to the dark alley. If she had the will power or energy, she could have teleported to a hospital, but instead she sat in pain, hoping that someone might find her.

Sabriel, unlike many people who walked the city streets in the evening, had an innocent purpose. He didn’t eat much of the school food, both for lack of appetite and finding the food less than what he enjoyed, and so kept his own refrigerator stacked with food. He’d ran out of milk and had decided to run quickly to the store, and to take a back way since it was getting late and he didn’t want it to close before he got there.

Usually he hated the night, and especially traveling through alleyways. This was the way things went in horror movies. It made his mind race with morbid thoughts, with ideas of danger and death. He hated the fact that those things made him almost quiver with fear and they weren’t even happening.

He took a deep breath and looked around, feeling a little lost but figuring this route had to lead somewhere – he would be free from the maze eventually. Sabriel hadn’t been expecting to hear the soft cries of a girl his own age, however, nor see her curled up into something like a ball in the alley.

He stood frozen, his cat ears perked up on his head and his tail stilled in mid-sway. Sabriel drew his arms up close to his chest and averted his gaze for a moment, his golden eyes seeming less lucid than usual.

Carefully he stepped toward her, his feet light upon the ground. “Miss…” he said softly, “Are you all right? You’re crying.” His voice was filled with compassion and he waited, hoping that his entry had been socially acceptable and that he had done no wrong.

Jessica looked up, her bright blue eyes brimming with hot salty tears. She didn't recognize the boy and a moment of immediate dismay and fright shot through her small body. She was not really in the mood to have to get up and run away from yet another person begging for a wish, and willing to kill her for one. She studied him quietly for a moment, taking a good look at his bright eyes and his ears. The ears particularly interested her because they were so uncommon, she knew since she had them as well. Judging by his height and face, she guessed he was not much older than she was, if not the same age.

“Miss… “Are you all right? You’re crying.”

Wow, maybe he wasn't going to try to kill her. But then again, Jessica didn't now for sure. Oh well, at least she could give it a chance."I, uhm, my arm. It, I think I heard it snap." she said, looking up at him. She just hoped that he wouldn't use this information as a way to distract her before he attacked.

Her arm snapped? Sabriel’s ears perked to attention and he moved closer, made hesitant by this sudden closeness. “A-Are you okay? Do you want me to take you to a hospital?” Her health was far more important than him buying milk tonight. He looked her over, biting his upper lip at the sight of her tear-stained face. He loathed seeing people cried, especially after he himself had cried so much in the past. Crying now… it almost seemed impossible for him to do it.

“I’m Sabriel,” he said. “Sabe.” He walked closer, holding out a shaky hand for her to take. He wanted to help her, but he didn’t want either of them to get in trouble either, especially when the world wasn’t a safe place. “C-Come with me? I-I’ll help you. Or something. I think? Is that okay?”

“A-Are you okay? Do you want me to take you to a hospital?”

"I-I-I am okay.. Well not really..." she said quietly, not wanting him to have to trouble himself with her problems. She attempted to move her arm, but flinched from the large amount of pain that it inflicted on her. She leaned back, sucking in air in a long deep breathe. She looked up at him, then used her non-impaired arm to run her hand through her long brown hair, taking a quick moment to tug slightly on her ear.

“I’m Sabriel, Sabe.”

"I'm Jessica. Jessica Lei. Or just Jess." she offered in reply. She was still unsure if this was part of some crazy scheme, but she decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and trust that maybe he was just a good guy who happened to find her alone and hurt in an alleyway after a possible attempt on her life.

“C-Come with me? I-I’ll help you. Or something. I think? Is that okay?”

She looked up at him, completely out of words and thoughts. He wanted to help? And not just help but help her? That never happened. Usually it was the other way around. She stared at him for a moment, before reaching out her free hand for him to help her up. Once she was back on her feet she examined her arm more closely and noticed a very large bruise forming. She touched it gently and a sharp pin shot through the arm once more, then down into her spine. She knew it was broken, she didn't need to go to a hospital to figure that out.

Maybe his question had been a little stupid. He could tell that she wasn’t okay, it was obvious. She was crying and the way she moved her arm made it apparent that something had happened to it. He appreciated her honesty, though, and nodded to confirm that he had heard what she had said.

An awkward smile caused the corners of his lips to twitch when she said her name. “Hi Jessica,” he said quietly, figuring that was a good way to properly introduce them. Sabriel went silent after that, at least until he had helped her up. It felt weird, touching another person’s hand – but Sabriel disliked most physical contact anyway. He wasn’t sure why he did, as he didn’t find it disgusting or anything, but he wasn’t going to dive into it and try to come to a conclusion about reasons. That was for psychiatrists to do, and he wasn’t about to go see one. Not again.

He watched her examine her arm, his brows knit in concern. Sabriel tentatively reached out his hand, only to draw it back. She probably didn’t want him to touch her anymore. “It looks r-really bad,” he said. “Do you go to the school? Because I can take you back there, they should be able to help. A-Are you okay with that?” Sabriel shifted his stance, folding his hands behind his back. “You can’t just leave you arm like that.”

She felt like she'd had this conversation before, and had some feeling that when this had happened before, it had ended worse than it had begun. She also wasn't sure if going to the school's hospital would be such a good idea. To her, it always seemed like something much worse happened at the hospital than what had actually brought her there. She was not in the mood to go in for surgery and end up with something even more wrong with her than before, because that's something that would just happen to her at hospitals. But, the more that she thought about it, the more the idea sounded good. She wouldn't be in surgery for a broken arm, just an x-ray then a cast. No harm, no foul, right?

"Yes, I go to Starlight Academy. I suppose we could go back there. Where do you go?" she asked. Talking was distracting her from he pain. She would have even offered to just take him through a shadow back to school, but she wasn't sure if in her current predicament that she could muster up enough energy to get herself through, let alone another person of the same age. It just seemed very unlikely to her.

“I go there too.” Sabriel nodded. He was surprised she hadn’t heard any rumors about him, but maybe now what he had disclosed he was that Sabriel she might start to realize. A part of him hoped she didn’t know, or at least didn’t care; she was a nice person and the closest thing he had gotten to a friend in his two years at this school.

Sabriel began to walk back the way he came, looking over his shoulder to make sure Jessica knew to follow. “You can walk, right? Or-or do you need me to help you?” he asked, taking a few more slow steps before he fully paused. They were a few yards away from each other now due to the distance he had put between them.

She thought for a moment, trying to remember if she had heard his name before, or even seen him. She gave up because she couldn't recall anything about anyone named Sabriel. She nodded when he asked if she could walk by herself, which she was able to do without moving her arm. She used her freehand to create a sling with her sweater that she'd been wearing to hold the limp one steady as she began walking, a few steps behind Sabriel. She couldn't help but feel a little uneasy about being this far away from hm, even if she didn't fully trust him yet, but she put the idea out of her head..

until--

"There you are you little brat!" came a voice from behind her. Suddenly a large brawny arm was wrapped around her waist and another was around her neck. Her arms were still free, so her currently broken arm was away from being damaged any further, yet. She began kicking furiously backwards, towards his shins, remembering that if you are even grabbed from behind, that is where you should aim. He finally let go and she took off. She ran past Sabriel, and for fear that he'd be linked to her due to their similarity in ears, she grabbed his hand and ran with him. She still wasn't exactly sure why she was worried about saving him, but she did it anyways.

Sabriel whirled around when he heard another voice. His eyes widened at the sight of the man and he took a small step back, his mind whirring at the sight of Jessica caught in someone else’s arms. He knew, by society and moral law, that he was supposed to help her – but he was Sabriel. What could he do besides make things worse?

It seemed to take only moment for Jessica to free herself from the man’s hold. She started running and grabbed his hand, pulling him along with her. Sabriel yelped and almost stumbled at the sudden velocity, but managed to catch himself before he lost his balance and brought both of them down.

“What the hell did he want?!” Sabriel yelled, looking over his shoulder at the man who they were leaving in the dust.
