Alaude meant to say sorry for rocking the small boat, but something in his head held him back. So he kept rowing-- tried to, at least-- especially since Theo gave them a go to cross to the other side. The fact that he did must have meant that they were becoming more steady, and the kayaking beginner becoming better.
But Alaude didn't realize how tense his arms were and how much his legs struggled inside the kayak. Even someone like him would be intimidated by water so deep that it was black, but since he really wanted to cross, he rowed past the really dark center and didn't think of anything else until they've reached the lighter parts again, nearing the land. They weren't quite there yet, but they were near. And Alaude suddenly felt light.
Giddy and relieved, Alaude turned to Theo. No, he didn't make a stupid grin or any other noticeable expression really, but his movement was energetic. Too energetic, in fact, and the kayak instantly rolled to the side, sending them to the water with a violent splash. Alaude gasped and coughed, but he was quick to recover.
The first thing he thought of was Theo.
Quickly he pushed himself away from the capsized boat, and pulled Theo with him by the waist above the water.
His jeans were heavy against his legs, but he managed. With or without the life vest he'd manage. But having it on him was a good thing.
"I am terribly sorry!" he said the moment they've become stable in the water. Well, there goes the apology. Alaude might have been a bit too close to Theo during this moment, not quite thinking of letting him go just yet. "I'm an idiot. I'm... an idiot. I swear I didn't mean to uh..."
Alaude cleared his throat. He wasn't the type to talk a lot, and the realization that his mouth almost went off like a machine gun added even more to all the shame. He finally let Theo go.
"Are you, uh... unhurt?"
