He'd been foolish to try a shield at all - not when he already knew that the thing could teleport. He let out a cry, elbowing the bizarre and distinctly inhuman body away, and the shield released itself with a light pop as the air released, and he hurriedly scrambled backwards.

"Stop that!" He snapped, whatever composure he might have had rapidly vanishing. He just wanted to get away from the thing. He no longer had any aspirations about finding wood in this part of the forest, or even today at all.

Crow cackled, letting Enelen push him away. His body had a lot of natural give, still being that of a scarecrows. Straw stuffed with a wooden spine. Oh well. The scarecrow in question continued to clap, his hands clanging together.

"Stop cease desist what? Little ol small ol defenseless ol me? Well, I'm i'm i am not doing anything! Not a single thing at all stickyboy!"

The scarecrow let off another mad cackle, the light behind his face flickering crazily.

It was mad, if it had ever been sane to begin with. Possibly it had been made like that, as erratic and frightening as an oncoming storm. Humans liked predictability, and few things would make a more alarming guard than something acting... well, just like the thing was acting.

"Stop... doing that! Everything! Cackling!" He protested frantically, taking another big step backwards - and tripping. Of course he was almost guaranteed to do so eventually, but he toppled over, one arm spinning wildly as the other held onto his staff, and he went down, landing on his behind with a whump.

It hurt like hell, and his eyes squeezed shut as he tried to push past the hopefully temporary pain and alarm.

Crow's laughter deepened as Enelen fell over, cackling madly.

"Ooooh! Stickyboy! Fell over! Eeeeeeeeeehehehe! Gravity takes took taming its toll! Fall fell whoopsydaisy!" Crow laughed, pointing at Enelens fallen form. His laughter died off as he felt something approaching from behind him. The smile on his face died instantly as the scarecrow stood up straight.

Without saying a word, Crow removed the glove from one of his hands. Instead of metallic fingers though...

Five razor sharp knives were there instead of fingers, a slight green tinge to the metal. They looked like they could cut through the air itself.

A sharp caw broke the new found silence, as a large bird swooped down, fire burning behind it's eyes. It's talons were held out, sharp and aimed directly at Crows head. It appeared that the bird of prey was going to have pumpkin for it's next meal.

Appeared, at least.

Crow's arm shot up, impaling the bird with a smooth motion. Blood began to quickly flow down his arm, Crow remaining silent the entire time, a neutral expression on his face.

What happened next was like something out of one of Enelen's nightmares. The thing did not have hands. It had blades. It had knives for fingers, too sharp and too alarming. The bird wasn't even doing anything that odd - it was just going for a vegetable. But in an instant it was dead, impaled on the blades.

No, not even dead. Dead would have been too nice and easy. No, it was impaled, still fluttering limply against the blades that had stabbed right through it.

He had to get out. He had to be gone. It was obvious enough that he couldn't stay, and all the more obvious that the only way out would be to distract the thing. To keep it away. To make it think of something else, something other than him.

Throwing a stone or other simple magic wasn't going to do anything. No, he would have to talk his way out.

"What... what are you?" People loved to talk about themselves, and hopefully this thing was still at least human enough to take the bait.

And give him time to teleport away.

Crow picked the dead bird off his hand, his other gloved hand staining red. He shook the blood from his knives and dug his fingers into the bird, pulling out a small green Gem, about the size of a golf ball. It was glowing green, and pulsing with magic energy.

Once Crow pulled it out, the bird simply...evaporated. It faded away, slowly, even after Crow threw it to the ground. He gave Enelen a glance as the boy spoke.

The scarecrow gave a deep chuckle, an exact contrast to his high-pitched cackle from earlier.

"Isn't that a question. What am I?" He turned to face Enelen fully, Crossing his arms and putting the glove back over his knifehand. As the white garnemnt slipped over, the knives shifted instantly to fill the space, returning to fingers.

"I am many things. A scarecrow, a thief, a menace..." He laughed again. "I am old, and not from this world child. I simply wish to have my fun, and collect my bounty." The scarecrow turned, and began to walk into the forest, before he stopped, his head swiveling to the side to glance at Enelen again before he disappeared.

"You interest me. I'll be keeping an eye on you, stickyboy. Eeeeeeeeeeeeehehehehe!"

His high pitched, insane cackle returned as he finished his sentence, and simply disappeared into the forest, teleporting away.

Silence filled the path, Enelen's breathing the only thing that could be heard.

When he teleported, he normally had a specific stance. He normally let his eyes close, to better focus on the place he wanted to go. He'd teleported a hundred thousand times, and even so he still felt like being careful. Being careful was important. Being careful meant nothing would go wrong.

But it was impossible to be truly careful while faced with a monster. So he had to focus on where he wanted to go with his eyes open, had to keep the words of the spell locked inside his head. He could not speak the words. Could only pretend like he was paying attention as the thing rambled.

It didn't normally take so long, but it was harder to do, and he had to be more and more careful, trying not to get distracted.

He disappeared only a moment after the monster did, afraid it would come back. He would not linger. He would dwell later on the bounty, and he'd have to look up what a scarecrow was. But whatever it was, he didn't want to see it ever again.
