Wei stared at his phone for a long time as his mind tried to process his feelings. Why did he hate his dad? Were his feelings justified?

He started to type.

'i think what makes me made the most upset is that hes a god and he can do anything he wants and he left me alone to struggle

'but he contacted me a lot because of some magic ring bs and gave me real things'

'he couldnt have made sure we didnt go hungry and cold all those years?'

'he couldnt have left a letter or some money or food or medicine or something?'

Wei wiped frustrated tears from his eyes.

'i think thats justified'

Wei...

Hari looked at the messages he was receiving and felt incredibly sorry for his friend. He was such a kind and sensitive creature, but life liked to crush sensitive people under its heel.

Normally, Hari would be more objective about this. He would point out that Wei's father gave him skills and items to survive with, to help his people, and that was more important than the basic necessities in the long run.

But he knew what it was like to be hurt, and you don't tell a wounded man their suffering could be worse.

I understand where you're coming from and it is completely justified.

It seems like his ego was the reason for your family suffering. He thought about training your powers over whether or not you have something to eat.

Maybe that's the lesson you could learn from.

Ambition is fine, but it's too much if you start hurting people in the process.

Part of Wei could understand what his Dad was doing. Leaving him all alone to survive in sub-par conditions would be a good way of testing how resistant he could be to negative circumstances. Teaching him skills to keep him alive and able to survive on his own without endangering others. But what about his mom? His brother? What was the point of testing them?

He put his head down in thinly veiled frustration, and wished he was in Hari's room right now.

'I wonder if they're doing better without me there', he typed absentmindedly.

'I wonder if now that it's just the two of them and they dont have to worry about me are they doing better?'

Hari knew Wei's brand of self-loathing all too well.

They probably miss you.

You are important to them.

Wei shifted the way he was laying on the roof, rolling to his stomach to avoid looking at the infinite expanse of the sky.

It reminded him too much of his nightmares.

'i have no doubt they're missing me'

'but if im not there they dont have to worry about feeding me or clothing me'

'they have more money for just the two of them'

'i wonder if theyre better off because of that'

Pain endured with the people you love is better than comfort without them. You don't know what I would give to be in the creaky house in Japan with my mother again, eating nothing but rice and salt, than in a fancy room here in Manta Carlos.

You are not, and will never be, a burden to the people you love.

Something about Hari's words comforted him. It was nice to think that even if they were doing a little better financially, they would still be missing him greatly.

Still...

'I want them to be happy without me' he confided.

'I want them to feel more comfortable when I'm not around'

'even if i wasnt a burden to them i want them to be happy to have more money now'

'do you think they are?'

'enjoying that i mean'

I'm sure they are, a little.

But they probably miss you a whole lot more, just like how you miss them.

It's hard, missing people so much it hurts, but I think you're lucky to have that sort of thing in your life.

He paused, resisting typing something incredibly bitter and personal. He edited his text a few more times before finally sending this instead:

You have something to come back home to.

Reading Hari's message, Wei realized that he didn't know a lot about Hari's life, even though Wei had told him a lot about his own family and his frustrations about it, the monkey didn't know much of anything about the personal life of the person who was his mom-away-from-mom, so to speak.

How could he broach the subject? He wanted to know more about Hari, to him it seemed only fair. But he wasn't sure how to broach it without seeming insensitive or weird.

'do you wanna talk about that'

No

This isn't about me

It's not really any of your

Hari sighed before settling on:

There's really nothing to talk about, Wei. Everything's that happened to me happened a decade ago. I'm a completely different person from who I was then.
