Somehow Wei got the impression that Hari didn't want to talk to him--him specifically--about these feelings, no matter how much he actually did want to hear them. He was Hari's friend as much as Hari was his.

'okay'

'my phone is always open JIC'

Then, remembering that Hari didn't do well with acronyms, he added:

'just in case I mean

Hari wanted to talk about it.

Really, he did. He had a ton of pent up stuff that constantly frustrated his therapist because he refused to talk to her about them. He wanted to talk about his deep attachment and idolization of his mother, his subsequent accidental murder of her, his deep hatred of his father and his two years of isolation.

He was tempted to, for a moment. But he remembered the horror in Wei's face when his fingers made contact with the grass at the sports field. Wei already thought his power was horrifying, and he went through great lengths to win his friend's trust — if he found out how easily he could kill him, he feared what would happen.

His father used to love him, too. His father admired his intelligence and he would tell him stories about Japanese folk tales and tucked him into bed every night. But after his mother's death, he suddenly turned from his 'son' to a 'little demon.'

Wei saw him as soft and warm as potato pancakes. He didn't want him to think he was a demon.

So he stopped himself.

How are you feeling?

Wei stared at his phone expectantly, expecting a message back, but he wasn't sure what he should expect. Would he see a long monologue about Hari's feelings and Hari's past--he knew that he had a particular disdain for a monstrous father, but seemed to have a particular affection for his mother, and that was the end of his knowledge on the matter--or just a small blurb to change the direction of the conversation.

The monkey boy held his breath, hoping against hope for the former.

What he got was the latter.

'scared'

'disappoi--'

'i dont kn--'

Finally he sighed and tapped out a message, sending it before his higher brain could tell him it was a bad idea.

'lonely'

He knew that that was directed at him, so Hari ran a hand through his hair and sighed.

Do you really want to know?

Wei moved his fingers around the keypad on his phone. He wanted to know, of course he did, but he also didn't want to make Hari tell him from guilt or something. How could he make that come across

'i do'

'but i mean i contacted u because ur like'

'the best at thinking'

'and im not the best at thinking'

'so even though i really wanna know, i understand if you dont wanna tell me'

I don't think my past is something I would ever want to talk about. Not now, not ever. I'm sorry.

If it makes you feel better, you're my only family now.

It was the truth.

Reading Hari's message really did make Wei feel good. It felt nice to be considered family. It meant more to him than Hari probably knew. To monkey people, a village was a single family.

And that meant that on this island, Wei wasn't living in a lonely village of one, but a cozy village of two.

'that means alot to me'

Honestly, that picked him up more than anything. Someone like Hari wouldn't be his family if he was a bad person.

'I love you hari'

'ur like mom 2.0'

He yawned. Tiredness was finally starting to catch up with him, his fingers lazily flitting over his keys.

Mother??? Well, I'll take it!

He didn't realize he was on the verge of tears until he started crying while laughing.

I love you too, son.

Wei smiled at the message, finally letting out a yawn. He probably wouldn't be able to make it back to his dorm safely, but the night was warm enough that he didn't feel too back about just sleeping under the stars.

'night mom'

The little monkey let out another yawn and closed his phone, resting his head on his arms and falling into a deep, comfortable sleep.

For the first time in weeks he didn't have a single nightmare.
