Science was quickly becoming Wednesday’s least favourite subject.

Despite not having a proper formal education, her adoptive family had put in the effort to make sure she had a good grasp on all the basic subjects. She had mostly transitioned into school life well, picking up maths and history and the rest of the mundane subjects with ease. However, her real specialty was magic, witchcraft, arcane knowledge. There were similarities between the sciences and her magic, there were rules, formulas, causes and effects. However, to her, it felt like a separate but parallel set of rules, like learning another language.

She tapped her pen against her desk, frowning at the worksheets set in front of her. Wednesday felt like she was starting to slowly understand, but the finer points still escaped her grasp. With a frustrated sigh to herself, she leaned over to the desk next to her, quietly speaking to the boy sitting there.

“Hey, um, sorry, but have you figured out how to solve question 4 yet?”

She absolutely loathed having to ask for help, but right now her desire to succeed in her studies eclipsed her pride.

Had time really passed by?

Sitting in the same classroom he did years ago made it felt like he didn’t leave at all. There were the same posters, the same old textbooks, and the same arrangements of the desks. Hell, he even sat in his old seat. It was as if he pressed pause on this chapter of his life, went on a journey of self discovery, and resumed as if nothing ever happened. And yet, things did happened. He grew older, a bit less timid, and uh… a lot taller. He was no longer the meek little middle schooler. He was in high school now, and in a few years, he would have to decide what he wanted to do for the rest of his life.

A bit intimidating, admittedly.

Even if he was gone for awhile, he managed to pick up where he left off. One of the perks of being a heavily pressured “gifted kid”, after all. His green eyes traced over the math problems before him, his contacts in today so he didn’t have to worry about foggy glasses. Running his hand through his thick hair, he tapped his eraser against the paper. If he just found the cosine…

Someone tapped on his shoulder, and he looked beside him. There was a question about one of the problems. He smiled gently.

”Sure, I’d be happy to help.” He stood up a bit and turned his chair to face the other student. He “hmmm’d” softly, trying to see what his peer had accomplished so far. ”To get the electronic configuration of magnesium, you’re going to want to use the noble gas base of the previous row...” He pulled over his periodic table, pointing to the Neon box and then tracing his finger to the row over. ”And then write the rest of the configuration, which is 3s2.” He looked up and smiled. He wasn’t very good at explaining things, and usually tended to give people the answer. ”Does that make sense?”

Wednesday listened intently, adjusting her glasses as she watched what he pointed out and nodding along every now and then. There were still a few gaps in his explanation, she knew, but at the very least she could work backwards from the answer using what he had told her and figure the rest out from there.

“Yeah, I think so. Thanks for the help.” She flashed a small smile, rubbing the back of her head bashfully. “Sorry again for distracting you, um...”

She paused, awkwardly.

“Sorry, I don’t think I ever got your name…?”

Oli was glad he could help. She seemed to get it more now, though he’d be more than willing to explain it again. He tended to overlook the details and more focused on the final solution when it came to explaining himself, yet he was meticulous when personally doing work. Then again, it’s been awhile since he was prompted for a personal conversation.

”It’s no trouble.” He assured. Though he expected the conversation to be over by then, she asked for his name. He usually didn’t get this far.
”Oh! Um- I’m Oli. What’s your name?” He asked inquisitively. Now that he thought of it, they were doing independent work now. It really didn’t hurt to make a few acquaintances. ”Sorry, I’m pretty new. Well- new to a lot of people I guess. I used to be a student here but then I took a break and came back and...”

He blushed a bit. ”I’m not talking too much, am I?”

"Oh no no of course not!" She quickly said after, hands raised reassuringly. "I'm actually um, pretty new here as well actually. I only arrived a few months ago so I don't really know anyone either."

Wednesday resisted the urge to have a small chuckle at the boys expense. She wasn't used to be around so many new people, her parents had kept her fairly sheltered. Normally she was the one rambling on nervously whenever she had to speak to someone new. Oli being equally nervous was actually somewhat refreshing to her.

"My name is Wednesday." She said simply, sitting up straight, recomposing herself, before offering her hand for him to shake with a polite smile. "I'm glad to make your acquaintance, Oli."

He sighed an almost audible sigh of relief. He worried sometimes that his words were a burden, but it seemed this new person was equally interested in talking to him. And shy. That helped to relieve some of his anxiety.

”Well then, welcome to the academy. It does take some getting used to, that much I know.” He chuckled a bit, seemingly taking up her hesitation to laugh at him to do so for himself.

When she introduced her name, he met her hand in a polite shake. ”Likewise Wednesday.” He kept his greeting short and sweet, but in reality he was more than pleased to actually be talking to someone. He loved school of course, but it did get tiresome being constantly education-oriented. One thing he made a promise to himself when he came back was that he needed to actually do more to grow himself emotionally, not intellectually.

”Say, um, class is gonna be over soon. I was going to grab some food and maybe go to the library or something. If you aren’t busy, want to tag along?” Already, he felt the teacher’s eyes on them as they took independent study to talk non-school related things. He wanted to get to know this new person better, plus he wanted some sort of company after being bogged down by math problems.

"Oh! I wouldn't want to be a bother or anything, but..."

Wednesday trailed off. Normally, she would spend most of her time outside of class in the library by herself. The island had a lot of interesting history to read up on, and their collection of magical tomes even eclipsed her family's own. It might seem lonely to some people, but Wednesday enjoyed the solitude.

However, she had been wanting to do more things outside her comfort zone lately, and Oli seemed nice. She could practically hear Tuesday's voice in the back of her head, telling her to go make some friends already. Besides, it's not like she was imposing or something, he was the one offering.

She also felt the teachers gaze on them, causing her to shrink back into her chair a little. She flashed him a sheepish smile.

"I'd like that, sure." She said, quietly, before turning back to her work. They still had some time until class was over, and she didn't want the teacher to start getting annoyed.

Oli smiled. Well, that worked out well. He nodded, scooting back to his spot before the teacher had the chance to speak up. ”Okay.” He whispered. ”Sounds like a plan.” With that, he got back to his work. For the time being, anyway.

When the class was over, it seemed his classmates all rushed out to get to lunch or home for the day. Oli slowly put his books back, zipping them up in his backpack as it seemed that they along with the teacher were the only ones left in the classroom.

”So, what would you like to do first? I feel like the cafeteria might get really crowded soon.” He said. He knew there was food nearby the outskirts of campus, but he wanted it to be up to his new acquaintance. ”Locations are kinda still rusty for me. ” He chuckled lightly.

Wednesday had mostly finished her work by the time class ended, only needing to double check her work to make sure it was all satisfactory. Once everyone began packing up she followed suit, neatly putting all her stationary away and filing all her worksheets in order. She stowed it all in her backpack and slung it over her shoulders.

"Hmm." She thought about it for a moment. Wednesday lived off campus, in the city. When she walked to school in the morning she did pass by a few places she was curious about.

"I um, I think there's this cafe a few minutes outside the campus I've been meaning to visit. Maybe we could head out and grab a sandwich or something?" She suggested, rubbing the back of her neck, that same small smile with the hint of nervousness on her face. "A-as long as you don't mind the walk or anything." She quickly added.

When she settled on an idea, Oli beamed a pleasant smile. ”That sounds perfect, actually.” He said, putting his own backpack on him, the light mint color clashing against the mandatory uniform. He expected a few businesses to change in his absence, though he was more open than ever to try something new. ”And not at all. I’ve done my fair share of trekking on my own. Besides, it’s not as dreadful out as it’s been lately.” Oli was used to chillier weather back home, but that wasn’t to say he was a winter person at all. Especially when factoring in his power.

He waved goodbye to the teacher, who didn’t bother to look up from the book she was reading. He walked by the door, standing by the frame as he smiled at Wednesday. ”Ready to go?”
