By the time an hour had passed, absolutely everyone in the station knew the absolutely ridiculous twist in the case. Xavier had been arrested. He'd been sentenced. He'd died in a tragic accident.

And then he'd come back as a freaking mermaid. Sudden species transformations weren't exactly unusual, but mermaids? Rare. Exceptionally rare. People didn't just turn into mermaids. That was weird. Even on a magic island.

Angelo had been tasked with picking up some paperwork from Dani's dorm parent, and his first stop was the hospital. He didn't know what was going to happen to Xavier or how any of that was working, but he did know that there was paperwork to pick up. It wasn't as if he'd been dispatched out anyway, but he'd instead broken a suspects arm during a scuffle and had to deliver him to the hospital. If he was there anyway, why not check, and he'd gone ahead and radioed in to let them know he was going to.

He'd gotten her hospital number, but been warned ahead of time that there was a doctor scheduled to be there for her discharge. Angelo headed right up, and it was only when he reached the door, finding it closed, that he realized he wasn't the only one waiting.

There was a boy sitting just beside the door, around Roa's age, looking particularly bored.

Definitely not Xavier though. There was, if anything, a negative family resemblance going on.

"You waiting for the Joiner kid...?" Angelo said, looking confused.

Gabe was exhausted. Coffee was helping, but only barely. After everything that happened, between Xavier's crime, his disappearance, his unusual reappearance, the conversation with Angelo, finding Diego again... He was just about done with the universe throwing curveballs at him. But it was going to be a great day. Dani was ready to be checked out of the hospital, and seeing a familiar face might make her day better.

Hearing a voice above him, Gabe looked up to a very muscular and quite handsome man staring down at him. He blinked, looking at the man for a long moment before letting out a sigh. Of course the universe wasn't done fucking with him. It was like a very terrible soap opera. "Holy hell, Angelo." Gabe sighed, staring at the man blinking with slightly hazy, desperate for sleep eyes. "You got aged up. Quite a lot, it looks like. I like it, though. Guessing you're here to try and fix that too? Seems like everyone from Halcyon is getting slapped with weird transformations."

The guy looked tired. Really tired.

But maybe not tired enough for the answer he got. For a moment, Angelo was stupefied, trying to process whether or not he was kidding. Of course he wasn't though, and he looked so confused that Angelo couldn't help but wince.

"Uh, close," he said quietly. "But not really. I'm Angelo, but I'm not the Angelo you're thinking of. When did you last sleep, exactly?"

"Mmm, few hours. Maybe. It's been a stressful week. But you know all about that."

Gabe slid slightly over on the bench he was seated on, patting the seat next to him. "Come, sit with me. I know I saw you the other day... Well, the 'before' you, but it's nice to see you anyway." He looked up expectantly, as if surprised that Angelo wasn't already sitting next to him. "I'm surprised to see you here, though. You were still so burnt out after the thing with Xavier that I didn't think you'd be here to see Dani out. I'm very glad that you're here."

Gabe took a sip of his coffee, feeling the dark liquid rush down his throat. Hopefully the caffeine would really kick in soon so he could be more awake for the little blonde laser girl.

Okay, nope, he wasn't getting it. Angelo couldn't help but grin, deeply amused by the whole thing, even if it was a little bit mean.

"Alright, so, I'm sure you know Angelo's got the whole thing about, ah, being from another dimension, right? Well, here I am, the him from this dimension."

He stuck his hand out to shake.

"Angelo Genovese, Sergeant with the MCPD. I suppose you're a friend of the other me's?" If Jude had mentioned him, Angelo had no idea. He didn't know who the kid was, but he was pretty exhausted looking and absolutely not firing at all cylinders. "I'm just here to talk to Miss Joiner's dorm parent. If you were hoping for the other one, he's at home in bed as far as I know."

Gabriel blinked.

This was not his Angelo. This was a different Angelo. Since when was there another Angelo!? Gabe stared at Sergeant Genovese for what felt like an eternity, gears in his brain shifting. Had Angelo ever mentioned another Angelo? Thinking back to every conversation the two had had, only one thing popped into mind. It was just a one-off comment, but he had listed names. Names for his support system.

"I have a good support structure now. My dad. Officer Genovese. The rest of the Defiant. You. Alma. So I'm okay."

Officer Genovese.

Oh, for the love of every god. The teen let out a large groan, slapping his face with his palm. He was a special kind of idiot. Placing his hand in the much larger hand of Angelo's, he quickly gave the man a firm handshake. "Sorry. Gabriel Vega. Or Gabe. I'm a... friend of Angelo's. Other Angelo. God, I'm oblivious. It's been a hell of a week, Sergeant Genovese."

"I've heard," Angelo said, giving him a proper handshake. "Well, mostly by proxy. None of the cases have been mine, but I was in the hospital anyway, and one of my fellow officers asked me to pick some stuff up."

He considered for a moment, cracking a smile as he did.

"Did he really not mention his significantly more handsome older self? Tragic." He hadn't missed the I like it either. "Angelo's living with me for now, along with his father. They'll be moving out by the end of the month though. He went by Jude because things got a bit too confusing, but now... well, we're pretty much used to it. Not much confusion, really."

Except, you know, right then.

Oh fantastic.

What's better than one Angelo teasing him and making him blush? Obviously the answer is two Angelo's teasing him and making him blush. Although this one was less about romantic advances and more about how stunning this adult Angelo looked. Holy-freakin'-moly. If Angelo grew up and looked even half as good as this, he was gonna have to hide him up in a giant tree to keep everyone off of him.

"No, sir. I only knew he knew an officer with the surname of Genovese, but I assumed it was a relative of some kind." Gabe paused. "Although, in a weird way, you kind of are a relative. Sort of? I don't understand dimensional complexities."

"And you're here for paperwork? Sounds quite thrilling for an officer of the law."

"Sort of," Angelo said. "We're kind of iffy on how related or not related I am. I'd say a cousin's a good relation, in terms of how we act, but I didn't exactly have any relatives to compare to."

That was something he had in common with Jude, although they were one relative off.

"Just pickup," Angelo said. "But I don't want to interrupt the doctors or whoever's in there."

He squinted at the door.

"So I've got a few minutes, and why not check in with you. You're the one who was down at the beach with him and the fish, right? A Halcyonite." Yep, he knew who he was, although only in general terms.

Gabe enjoyed the conversation with Officer Genovese. He was very much like his Angelo, just a bit older and more... calm? It was a hard feeling to describe. The similarities between the two was beyond just physical; they both seemed to really hold themselves together and were extremely approachable. It was kind of endearing. A little creepy that the two were so alike despite (assumed) different circumstances growing up.

Then the questioning started.

Every instinct in Gabe's stomach screamed at him to say nothing. Say nothing to the police, nothing can be used against you. It was a mantra he had repeated to himself over and over in Halcyon. He wouldn't be punished for-... He wasn't in Halcyon. He wasn't in trouble. He was fine. Nothing bad was going to happen to him. He took a few deep breaths before locking eyes with Officer Genovese.

"Yes, I was at the beach with Angelo and Xavier. I am a Halcyonite as well, same as Angelo."
