"Ah," he chuckled as he listened to Zora's retelling of how she would sometimes fall asleep in the library, "fortunately I don't need to sleep so I never had to suffer the effects of readers' slumber like that." It had certainly helped when preparing for exams too- he was never going to be put out by an all night cram session.

He did have one confession to make though. Colten leaned in conspiratorially as he shared what he had been caught doing, "I admit though I have been caught making notes in the margins of some of our tomes. Corrections and important thoughts about the material mostly." That had been rather hard to explain sometimes. Now he knew not to mar the pages of very expansive unique books but many others in his library were annotated with the various thoughts and ruminations of one Colten Morey.

As they spoke Colten realized they had been kind of lingering in one area and he made a conscious but discrete effort to direct them through the room. Changing the scenery a little as they spoke. "Indeed the genre does give people pause sometimes but if the work is of excellent quality and the audience greatly enjoys it, why should I be ashamed or doubtful about writing it?" The response was well-practiced. It was a reasonably common question, though he was absolutely unashamed of his work.

"I'm very much a creative writer at heart so my current best-selling novels are fantasy. Of course because it is for young adults there is always an element of romance. I think the trickiest and also most rewarding part of writing for that audience is playing around with what they expect to read and shifting it ever so slightly so that it is unique while still being relatable,"
Colten explained and then actively stopped himself form continuing further for the moment. It was feeling a little bit like he was starting to give an academic lecture and this was not the appropriate venue for that sort of thing.

"Ohhh, you are quite the rebel, Mr. Morey," Zora laughed when he admitted to making annotations in book margins, "Defacing books with your private observations," she added, not at all offended by such an act. As one of her tutors had told her, 'Books are to be loved, written in, passages marked and underlined, books should be used and enjoyed by the reader, not used as fancy dust collectors.'

Zora followed Colten away from the exhibit to another part of the room, smiling politely at her guests as they moved along, listening as he talked and nodding in agreement with his words.

"Oh, I totally agree with you. You should always write what you enjoy. Besides, you can sort of tell when an author enjoys the story they are telling," she mused. "there is a certain something... a connection perhaps with the readers," she added thoughtfully.

Colten chuckled merrily at the comment about being a rebel. As far as he was concerned he was adding to the value of the books by contributing his own ideas. Maybe that was just him being a little full of himself, but what could he do? Pride was in his blood.

He nodded politely at the various other guests, keeping track of who he recognized and who he didn't. Even if the conversation was somewhat self-absorbed in some cases, he couldn't ignore the other people. He had a reputation to keep.

"I call it the heart," Colten mused aloud. "The intangible feeling that the author cares about what they are conveying and it's usually what an audience feels drawn to. I could write a million words and yet none of it would stick in people's minds unless there was something else behind the words." It was naive to think that all of his readers would latch onto his stories. But the ones who did seemed to have a certain ravenous desire to experience the worlds he designed. As far as he knew though there was nothing actually magical about it though. Just compelling writing.

"But then you said you enjoy books quite a bit so you have felt it yourself. The urge in the back of your mind to go back to reading an unfinished book when you have other things to do. Or to stay reading for just that one more chapter... that turns into three," Colten laughed as he spoke. He admittedly had done the same thing on countless occasions. He'd lost himself in books on many occasions and a marathon reading session was only amplified when one didn't need to sleep.

"Or a simple chapter just before bed turns into early morning hours with the book almost finished..." Zoraida smiled, recognising herself quite easily in any of the situations Morey mentioned. Especially when she was younger and had more time for such things. Now, sadly, a lot of her reading was client portfolios, stock acquisitions, business reports and plans. All very dry, and nary as exciting as a story about an age-old mystery involving star-crossed lovers meeting at different times throughout history and in different dimensions.

"So, have you been living on the island for very long, Mr Morey?" Zoraida asked curiously as they moved to another part of the room.

Colten nodded along as Zora seemed to get it. She was clearly another person who loved books and reading as much as him. Though for his part he was quite fond of writing them too. But not everyone had that talent.

They continued perusing the room and examining various bits and bobs of artwork as they chatted. More or less making a big long circuit around the various exhibits. He closely examined what appeared to be a sculpture of a large dog made from obsidian. It was beautiful.

"I was out living in the narrow reality for a couple years and only returned fairly recently," he started to answer Zora as he looked over the artwork. "But before that yes, I lived here on the island for about 8 years." He hadn't been born there and his childhood had been in hell, literally, but he considered himself a longtime resident of the island and quite invested in things.

Finally he turned his gaze back away from the sculpture to regard her again. "And how about yourself. Is this your home or are you a temporary visitor?" he asked, as if he didn't know about her and her family's business empire. He might not have been on the island for a couple years but that didn't mean he didn't still have an ear to what was going on.

"I'd venture to say that Manta Carlos has started to slowly become my home and where I am most comfortable," Zoraida told Colten amicably as they stood before the sculpture and chatted, having looped most of the room and the exhibits.

"I was born in the Narrow Reality and grew up there, made my mark in the business world there as it were, and coming here was supposed to have been short term," she told him, "We were going to open a new head office that was disenfranchised from the rest of company, but, well, life happened and the truth is, somehow, I feel like I belong here more than I do out there, beyond the Veil," she admitted as she tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, not sure why she was sharing this secret truth with a stranger. Not that it was a big or bad secret, it was just something she had never admitted openly to anyone before, not even to Celeste.

Colten nodded. The island had a way of becoming home to all kinds of people. Whether they arrived by choice or not. Technically Colten hadn't wanted to come here originally but he was glad that his mother had dragged him over from hell.

"I know the feeling. Sort of. I went to live out there for a couple years as my human alias but I never could have stayed away. I'm a demon. I'm proud of who I am, and my home is here on the island," he expressed in a slow, calm voice. He wasn't from the Narrow Reality so he couldn't really appreciate the feeling of being born out there but feeling more at home here. Although to be fair he was born in hell but didn't consider that his home either. Not really.

Colten's tail flicked lazily as he listened to her, with no real meaning to it other than having his tail stay motionless felt wrong. Like deliberately walking around with your arm hanging limply at your side while the rest of you moved and adjusted. "People have a funny habit of growing attached to this place. But I suppose a big part of that is the people you grow connected to here," he mused as he thought about the various people he liked being around. Most of whom were admittedly on his staff or demons but there were others too. There were also those who Colten wasn't so pleased about, but that was pretty normal.

Helping herself to another glass of wine as a waiter went by, exchanging one glass for another, Zora listened rapt with attention and nodded in agreement.

"Yes, the Narrow Reality is not as open as here," she said, "As much as they presume to be tolerant and openminded, a demon like you, in the form you are now would be feared by most," she admitted with a shake of her head at how closed-minded humanity still was.

"Heck, even me, I look human, am human, but if I used my powers openly there, people would also be wary, if not openly scared of me." she sighed. The stake burnings were far in the past, yet the fear of witches - real witches with real powers - still existed.

"For sure, my family is here on the island now, and so is my son and my boyfriend. I mean without the people we enjoy being around and love, well, life would be sadly quite lonely and boring," she said as she looked up a little at Colten and regarded him quietly. He was a handsome demon for sure, and she couldn´t help but wonder... "Is there someone special in your life, Mr. Morey?"

Colten also took a glass of wine from the waiter as they stopped briefly for Zora. He wasn't exactly planning to get drunk, but a few glasses wouldn't be out of the question for attending an event such as this.

He waited to take a sip until he had stopped speaking and swapped to listening to her. "Indeed. My horns and tail would cause no end of trouble in the Narrow Reality. Which is why I was unfortunately required to hide them at all times I could be seen while living there- talk about annoying. Can you imagine being used to having a tail for all your life and then poofing it away for hours and hours at a time?" It was more of a rhetorical question, but hey conversation was conversation. The ordeal had been quite necessary to help solidify Colten's human alias. Which was in turn extremely important to maintaining his Narrow Reality book sales.

Colten nodded along as Zora relayed how she had connections both familial and romantic on the island. It was exactly what he'd been getting at. Though his own family was no longer on the island, with his mother returned to hell, his father being far too busy to be super involved in his life and his step father deceased. Actually Colten's connections on the island were essentially all non-romantic and not based on love. His closest companions were members of his staff and guests of the Manor, which he treated exceptionally well.

Zora's last question though made Colten raise his eyebrow. "You know when a woman brings up their boyfriend and then asks if a gentleman is single it starts to sound like a trap being laid," Colten said seriously but then broke into a grin. He didn't actually think she had been asking in that way. It was just her reaction that he was hoping to catch. Colten laughed and took a sip of his wine before continuing, "no, no I know better than to believe that was your intention. Truthfully I was quite preoccupied with my work before and now similarly occupied with maintaining the Manor and the Morey Estate's goals. Should I meet the right woman I would be delighted. But no, I am currently a gentleman bachelor."

Colten had dated enough during his upbringing but nothing serious had developed from it. Now someone would probably have to make the impression that she was worth devoting the time for a relationship.
