He smiled, "well its not the lack of parties that bothered me really, I was unable to be very social at all that year."

He chuckled a bit, "oh I don't think of myself as dashing really." He smirked a bit, "well they say masks often bring out the real person, once the face is hidden many show who they really are."

He smiled and leaned in a bit, "I suppose wearing them makes some less nervous. Me for example, I was quite nervous coming to the island, but odd enough this ball is helping me settle in."

They continued to sway to the music, "this island seems incredible already, so much to see and do," he smiled again, "it would be nice to explore it with someone."

She looked at that smile for a moment, feeling so foreign and distant in the light of it. He was some distant star and she was the dark side of the moon. It was both distressing as well as encouraging, leaving her at a loss. All she could do was to take the offered rose delicately in her hand. The stem was mostly smooth, her fingers running into the bumps where thorns had been.

"You are far more courageous than I," she told him quite seriously, meaning every word. After all, she had been on the island for at least a year and the people who knew her name could still be counted on a single hand.

She pressed her lips together uncertainly. The rose twirled in her fingers briefly. "I am not good with people at all," she said, which was not a rejection.

He smiled and took her hand gently, "I understand, it can be difficult to socialize. It may not seem like it, but I'm quite nervous as well," he gave her hand a reassuring but gentle squeeze, "this place, seems so strange to me."

He looked at her, his smile never leaving, "I am afraid, I am nervous, but we shouldn't isolate ourselves." He flicked his wrist again a playing card popping into his hands, he smiled and showed it to her, "an ace, a sign of good luck. So, lets overcome our nervousness and fear, let us enjoy our evening. And together we may find a place here."

Coldplay - Viva la Vida

So much was on his mind. Between his job, his relationship, he even wondered why he was here as he sat along the refreshments line, staying far away from everyone else. He sighed. Thinking, maybe, this might be a stress reliever for him. Maybe. If only there was a way to think with all this music going on.

It was the wicked and the wild wind,
Blew down the doors to let me in.
Shattered windows and the sound of drums.
People couldn't believe what I'd become.

He almost felt like crying.

Even being overwhelmed just a little bit.

Thoughts raced of those times he'd become something else.

He put his hand on his face and took a deep breath.

Revolutionaries wait,
For my head on a silver plate.
Just a puppet on a lonely string,
Oh who would ever want to be king?

Would she ever talk to him again?

He shook his head in the fear that enveloped his mind, sharply exhaling his breath. He was scared. He was scared of losing everything..

What to do?

"You hide it well," she remarked quietly. But she still let him take her hand, even if the sensation of somebody actually touching her made her entire body stiffen. If only she could share his confidence! But maybe, she thought, it would be acceptable to pretend, just for the day.

Still, it was only polite for her to at least give him some warning. "If you are a magician, you may want to reconsider," she told him. "Magic and I are not particularly companionable to each other. It can be unsettling to most."

He smiled and gave her hand a gentle squeeze, "then there is no worries....while I have a few magical tools I myself don't know any spells."

With that he gently led her to the dance floor, placing their hands in the appropriate positions they began to sway to the music.

"I must thank you," he smiled, he had left his mask up, "as I said, I was nervous coming here. You've already helped relieve my nerves. It's an honor to dance with such a lovely girl."

Gwyn hummed thoughtfully, smile wavering a little as she considered what he said. "I'm sorry to hear that, but it seems you'll be getting back into the swing of things rather easily."

Then she laughed. "Those are just the sort of thing you say at a ball, not to say my compliment is any less genuine, but you're meant to find the attractive qualities in your dance partner." At least, that was what Gwyn assumed. She had never actually been to a ball before, but tonight was all about pretending, as things usually were.

She nodded her agreement, not seeming to realize he had leaned in as she made no move to get closer or farther away from him. "Oh yeah. When you wear a mask, you can be whoever you want to be. No one can find you later and judge you about it. But even here, a masquerade feels magic, doesn't it? Different and light and special."

Gwyn breathed out in contentment, pure bliss. "Are you suggesting we explore together?" she asked, a twinkle of mischief in her eye.

A slight blush raised up on her cheeks as she was led out onto the dance floor. Since arriving here she had been so focused on her studies that she had rarely had time for social gatherings of any kind, so she had not had the chance to really meet anyone special, or even many people in general. Strangely she had spent so much time learning the customs of this place and never really found herself a place to put this learning to use. But here and now in this moment all of her concerns and minor anxieties were diminished as this handsome stranger held her hand.

She was purposefully carrying herself lower than him, it gave her the chance to look up at her "prince" and further enhance the effect he was having. Even now as he brought up her tail and dress, and his own excitement she couldn't help but smile. It was very sweet. It was also nice that someone was excited about her being here.

"Thank you. I wasn't sure what to wear at first, it can be hard to find outfits."

After a moment the pair reached a spot on the floor that was unoccupied and Narraine faced her partner, placing her free hand on his shoulder, and giving him the chance to put his on her hip. "I must admit it is absolutely lovely here. The decorations, the people, the music. But I am liking it a lot more now." Her cheeks flushed up again as she realized she was flirting with him. that wasn't so bad though right? People flirted, so this would be OK.

Slowly she began to sway with the music, allowing him to lead her in the dance. "And your evening so far? Is it what you'd hoped?"

Aylin soon found herself locked in a playful embrace with her Sparrow. She had crept up on the Lamia and wasted no time throwing an arm around her and nuzzling her cheek affectionately. Aylin responded in kind, nuzzling her back, while taking the cup of punch. "I was worried that someone might have swept you away." She purred playfully.

"I am a little thirsty..." She said giving sparrow a little wink as she took a small sip from the cup. Aylin knew that there were multiple meaning's to the phrase, and had intended to drop a subtle hint. There was something going on here that was having an effect on her. maybe it was the attention, or the smooth accent of Sparrow. maybe it was the evening itself or just another hormonal imbalance, either way Aylin was feeling much more receptive than normal.

The girls gentle nip at her cheek only strengthened Aylin's urges, and she blushed slightly. "A dance you say. I'd be more than pleased little sparrow." She said as she held out a hand for the woman to take. "But there is no need to go easy on me."

He smiled a similar glint appearing in his red eyes, "I've really enjoyed this evening, and I see no reason for us to go our separate ways," he meant it, this night had been amazing in his eyes.

They continued to sway to the music, their movements in sync, "what would we find? It's a literal magic island," he smirked, "imagine the trouble we could find," he would explore it either way, but he was enjoing being around Gwyn.
