"Isn't that right," Kon sighed. It looked like everyone but the NEK0s who got adopted were downgraded when it came to where they lived.

A waitress came over to ask what the two wanted for drinks. Kon ordered water.

"As well as I can. I'm running on too short of time with too big of plans to let myself sulk with my tail between my legs. Speaking of, if my plans work out, I'll be working at the arena as a journalist and maybe become a commentator. I think I'm spirited enough to handle those positions," he said with a laugh.

Personally, Tier felt they were arrogant. Cocky, even. They believed that no matter what they put their mind to, they'd get it. But they hadn't yet learned to conform--they hadn't needed to.

One day, Tier suspected, they'd run into that very problem.

"The arena has three," Tier said. "And if you wanted to apprentice under them, you'd have to ask them. You'd need a high school diploma, however. Graduate first, then deal with this."

Did he feel bad about sort-of-kind-of-lying to them about their lifespan? No, not really. He didn't know. They didn't know. It was his own unproven speculation, and he'd never said it was the holy golden truth--just that it was what he believed.

And obviously it was working well for Kon, because they hadn't slowed down a bit since he told them.

Kon nodded a few times. "That's the plan. Well, the plan was to replace one of them someday, but that works too. With the speed I learn, I'll be up and running in no time."

Kon had wanted to wait until the two of them were comfortable and eating, but the real reason they wanted to talk to Tier knawed at the back of his mind. It showed on his face as his eyes drifted around the restaurant and his brows furrowed. Then his eyes focused firmly on Tieragoran with a serious glint that wasn't there before.

"Not to kill the fun mood, but I wanted to talk about something. Remember when I said I didn't think you were an actually bad person? None of it was a lie, and it still isn't.

"Obviously, not all of the NEK0s will agree with what I think, and I don't blame them. It's been complicated, trying to see things from both perspectives. I was hoping we could talk about it.

"But I'm fine with paying for your takeout and or eating in silence or whatever. In the end, I'm an outsider on both sides."

Oh boy. He could tell when their eyes started drifting. They had something on their mind. They hadn't just invited them out for a nice coworker lunch. No no, there was something going on, and it was going to shove its ugly face in, wasn't it?

"Well, you might as well get into it," Tier said, considering almost everything they'd said to be an elaborate lead up. "I don't see the point in putting it off, since it's obviously going to come up before long. So you might as well say your piece, rather than trying to... what, spare my feelings?"

Truthfully, he didn't care that much. Or he'd convinced himself he didn't, anyway.

Kon noticeably cringed. Already off on a strong start. He was beginning to second-guess himself, but it was too late to laugh things off and scurry away from the awkwardness he started. He made his bed. Time to die in it.

"It's not about sparring your feelings. I genuinely want to get to know you and chat, but I also didn't want to pretend nothing important was on my mind. I think it'd be more offensive to act like everything is fine, then hit you with a concern out of nowhere."

Kon realized is anxiety was becoming defensiveness.

"Sorry. I've been thinking about this for a while. Me being friendly with you has made things tense with some NEK0s." Natsuki in particular, but everything was tense with her. "I get why, but I'd be a hypocrite to not see you for what you are on the island, considering my best friend is a princess from a kingdom built on the domination and murder of others.

"So I decided, instead of hearing one side of the story, I wanted to make it known I was open to hearing the other side."

Tier didn't feel the need to beat around the bush. At least on this point, he had every intention of being very direct.

"I am a predator," Tier said simply. "I eat meat. Sapient meat. I consume flesh. In the narrow reality, if I do not kill, I die. You're a sheep getting close to a wolf, just because the wolf has a more readily available supply of food. So people doubt. People get worried. But more than that, people are hypocritical. They'll befriend a war god who has killed millions. They'll socialize with a former serial killer. but when it's someone who might have hurt them, things are different. People can't look past their own noses."

He paused as the waitress arrived, setting down their food in front of them.

"Even you," he said once she was away, picking up his food. "You were never in any danger from me, so it's easier for you."

Konpeitou had to hold back from huffing when called a sheep. The analogy worked, there was no arguing that. That still didn't change his feelings on constantly being referred to as something weaker.

For several seconds, Kon didn't speak. He poked at his food with a fork, too focused on finding the proper response. After taking a sip of his water, he managed to form a reply.

"I agree. That's why it's easier for me to try to look at both sides. I don't want one side to dictate everything I feel and ignore everything the other side says. I could ignore both sides and say it's not my problem, but I don't like that option either.

"I'm not trying to make everyone become friends or to 'redeem' you or anything else you'd find in a cartoon. I'm trying to prevent drama and understand things better. The other NEK0s might be warned about you. I don't want to help out with that, but I don't want them to think I'm working with the 'wolf' against them."

Now Kon was ready to take a bite of his food.

Kon was bothered. Tier, on the other hand, was not. He looked distinctly nonplussed, cutting up his food before popping it into his mouth. But there was a slight pause--a little halt--when they said other nek0 might be warned about you, a little shift in his expression.

He was bothered by that.

"Then you'll never find a middle ground," Tier said. "If you're anything beyond terse business professional with me, they'll push you out. Hypocritical of them or not, you'd be sabotaging yourself by trying to be friendly with me at all."

He went back to eating.

Kon noticed that pause. So that was what could get Tier concerned.

"Then I'll be selfish. I don't like being terse with anyone. I'll only be business professional if I absolutely have to. In the end, this is my life."

He took another bite of his food. The conversation wasn't going as badly as he thought it would, but he still felt uncomfortable.

"That's the only important thing I wanted to talk about... Thank you, by the way. It was crappy of me to throw this onto you randomly. I'm happy I got to talk about this and understand things better." What was once a tense and serious expression turned thankful and happy. "Hopefully from now on we can have normal conversations. I'll try not to bring up your past or NEK0s stuff anymore. I'm hoping to be done with all of this stuff soon."

Tier's happy mood was good and spoiled, but it wasn't as if it was obvious. He'd spent his entire life hiding, and he was a skilled and practiced liar. He could keep a straight face as he ate, and he could keep a straight face as he talked, and only an empath was going to be able to sense the frustration lurking beneath the surface.

"You won't be done with it," Tier pointed out. "You won't ever be. You're a nek0, and they're nek0, and to them that makes you family. Even normal conversations will bother them. All you're doing is choosing me over them, and that's how they'll feel about it. You're standing between two bridges on fire with a single bucket."

And Tier wouldn't blame them for a moment for making the obvious choice.
