"My parents worried about me. I never had an interest in boys, but... I did leave the house at thirteen." Nerina admitted. It didn't sound like she was kicked out, at least in how she phrased. "Because of my condition, I tried not to get too close to people. Then I met you."

Nerina's foster parents were an older couple with some money to their name, but they were not particularly wealthy or grand. They lived modestly and held rather conservative views, especially when it came to finding love and romance.

Nerina's hand slipped away from Eric's momentarily, but then she grabbed it with full force. Now that her words were charged emotionally they took on more of an edge with her alluring voice.

"I don't want to fool around with anyone. My parents wanted me to find someone nice and that would take care of me. It's so lonely, being in the sea. I want to understand more about you, Eric. Maybe I can be in the human world again with you."

Wow, she left the house at thirteen? That was a shock to hear, but parts of her statement did seem to make sense as he thought more on it. It seemed Nerina was a bit behind, perhaps more than a bit behind, in her learning skills. Eric wondered what happened, but more importantly he wondered whether it'd be polite to even ask.

Right after she pulled away, he could feel her hand squeeze his as it returned. She spoke again, and like those rare occasions it took on an enrapturing tone to it. Eric drank in every word, and agreed with each and every one like they were beautiful women.

"I understand," Eric said a little hazily. He smiled, "I would love to take care of you."

Why did that feel so right to say? In the back of his mind, Eric was entirely uncertain how he could manage that. He never really thought about a long term relationship with anyone. He never thought of anything more than fooling around, even for a while. But those words were pulled out of his mouth so easily.

"How about you meet my brother and sisters, once they come here? That won't be long from now."

Nerina felt warmth within her body. Her heart was aflutter, but little did she know that he said those words under the influence. Then, when she heard the word 'sisters', her eyes lit up and she smiled brightly.

"You have sisters? I've always wanted to have sisters." There was a daydreaming look in her expression. They would brush each others hair and do their nails and poke sea anemones in rock pools, giggling and playing on the beach.

"What are they like? I want to meet them soon."

She liked that he had sisters, huh? Eric smiled, "They're twins, but they don't look or act the same at all. They'll be coming to school pretty soon, I think." Eric explained. When he went to Starlight Academy, his father was already discussing arrangements for Fleur and Délise. It was a matter of what year to put them in, and so on.

"Fleur is the older of the twin, though just by a few minutes. And you wouldn't know it if you compared them. She's pretty energetic, extroverted, but composed at the same time. She wears pretty funky clothes and accessories, you should see them in person."

"Délise is like... well, she's the youngest of us, but she doesn't look it. I mean, if she told you she was thirty you'd believe her. But she's drop dead gorgeous, and I'm her brother saying that," Eric laughed, a little nervously. If Délise wasn't his sister... it was scary to think about. "She's very, uh, sociable, but I wouldn't say she's as extroverted as Fleur."

"Wow, twins," Nerina exclaimed. Having a twin sister would be the best. They'd be connected by telepathy and speak in secret languages, even if they looked completely different. She listened to Eric's description of Fleur. She would have asked how old they were, but by Eric's description of Délise as being the youngest, she knew he would be the older brother. It wasn't like her skills of deduction were that dull.

"Who's prettier?" Nerina asked when he mentioned Délise's beauty. She had a playful little smile on her face. "Her or me?" She knew his answer anyway, and she giggled lightly when he answered accordingly, but that left out one other sibling.

"Um, Eric. Are you the eldest brother? I actually never asked how old you were."

She really had to ask which one was prettier, did she? Eric didn't have any trouble saying the right answer, "You of course," but the fact was if Nerina saw Délise, Eric doubted she'd share his opinion. Oh well, it wasn't like he was going to leave her for his own sister.

"I'm turning seventeen this June," Eric explained. How did that compare him to Nerina? Eric was no stranger to pursuing slightly older girls, which he thought Nerina was. He just hoped she wasn't the kind to be afraid of dating a... slightly... younger guy.

"But I'm not the oldest. My brother is turning nineteen in July. He's a bit of a recluse. He spends more time in the library or classes. He's an incredible genius, he already has a Math degree, but he's studying for another one since he's still a bit young."

Eric scoffed, "I doubt you'd like him though. He's not really a people person." It was typical of Félix. He probably had zero experience with interacting with beautiful women.

"Seventeen?" Nerina frowned a little, biting the bottom of her lip. "I think I was born in July 7th, 1994. Give or take one or two years, I can't remember. I haven't celebrated my birthday in a long, long time."

She did not know how old she was now, but Eric sounded very young to her now. Yet it didn't matter to her now. She loved him just the same, no matter his age. It would not besmirch her opinion of him, but if she were like any other girl at the table with him, having lunch on their first date, it would have been much different, perhaps.

She listened to Eric's description of his older brother. Eric described his sister with praise and only good terms of beauty and friendliness. This brother of his, was rendered in a more sinister, shadowy words of being reclusive and not wanting to interact with people. As though she would already not want to meet him upon hearing what kind of person he was, and that he wouldn't like her too.

The only positive trait that was mentioned was that of genius, but even then, Nerina thought that maybe a genius would not waste his time on a simpleton like her.

"Do you not like your brother?" Nerina said, trying to make a faint smile. Her eyes were sad. "You don't talk about him like your sisters. Is he really that unlikeable?"

“That'd make you about... nineteen. That's not much older than me.” She was little older than Eric expected. He thought she was eighteen. Still, it didn't really matter as far as he was concerned. Not that he was going to explain it to Nerina, but not long ago he was flirting with a twenty-five year old. That was probably a bit much.

After Eric described his siblings, he noticed that Nerina picked up on something in the way he spoke. Félix didn't get the same treatment as his sisters. Eric wasn't about to drag Félix through the mud any further, but one could say he didn't want her to take a sudden fancy to him.

“Well, he's... different. He has different interests, and he's not quite as sociable as my sisters I suppose.” That much was true. Félix liked his alone time, and he spent more of his focus on music than a social life. The only thing was, Eric knew Nerina loved Jazz music. If he said anything about it, he worried she'd run away immediately to find Félix.

“He's alright though. I don't hate him,” Eric said. “What about you? Any siblings or anything? Or were you an only child?”

"I was adopted." Nerina said quietly. She said this with a straight face with no sense of heaviness or maltreatment. Instead, she was hurt differently by a different matter altogether. This wasn't a topic she wanted to take lightly. Her foster parents loved her, but her origin was not quite as heartfelt as that.

"I thought I told you before, my own mother didn't want me. Maybe you just forgot." She threw in a small smile, though there was something about it that made it feel uneasy.

"I want to go home. Did you... Bring your car?" She liked the feel of Eric's fancy convertible BMW, with its slick black look and leather interior.

Eric's smiled dipped a little. “No, I remembered. Just...” he thought to his own brother and sisters. He did love them all, albeit in different ways when it ultimately came down to it. What pressed on his mind was how Nerina went through life without any sort of friend like that. He couldn't imagine being an only child, even though there were plenty of them.

“I can't really imagine being an only child, you know? I thought maybe you had a brother or sister in foster care with you, or maybe your adopted parents...” but Eric dropped the conversation. He realized it made her uneasy, and that was the end of it. He sighed and straightened himself in his chair.

“Of course. Oh, and...” Eric smiled, “I had lots of fun, Nerina. We should do this again soon. Maybe something at night, like at the beach.” Eric grinned and stood up from the table, carrying their purchases down the street. Where did he park his car?

Her beach house was odd. There were lots of disjointed little rooms, all with doors. He had never seen a beach house like that. Every one had different painted colours too, which looked pretty cool. Eric wondered if he could have a house like that, it'd be fun in a sunny place.

"Nice house," he said to Nerina, completely serious. "You should show me around next time." He leaned into her in the car, giving her a long kiss, before letting her go out the door. Eric really could get used to her.
