Afterwards, they found a dress, all alluring black lace, with a simple black slip, and a small hair brush with some sort of 'ionic' technology that helped defrizz and tame hair. It was made of bamboo and eco-friendly, which were all 'ticks' in Nerina's book. She was suspicious about the ionic tagline, but it was already half past one in the afternoon. They ate a meal in the cafe that was near the entrance of the department store. It was Nerina's first time having coffee. Since the weather was nice, they sat outside.

Their orders were still coming; they came at peak hour for lunch, with the barista constantly churning out metal jugs of steamed milk and drawing what looked like fern into each cup of freshly brewed coffee. The sandwich press was hot, and inside was packed with people waiting for takeaway coffee and snacks, or eating and chatting with friends. Outside was less busy, and the air was cooler.

"This is my first time having coffee." Nerina admitted. With Eric, there were many firsts. First kisses, first department store shopping experience, first coffee, first quinoa. Eric ordered something healthy, as usual. A wholemeal bruschetta with tomato in balsamic dressing, fresh cheese, rocket and some lean chicken for protein. Because protein. Nerina got a clam chowder.

"I wonder if it's bitter..."

She looked at the raw sugar in the small glass, her arms folded across the table with her chin resting on them. As Eric would deliver her answer, Nerina's eyes were already serenely closed, the sunlight gently warming her back as she made herself comfortable for a bit of an afternoon siesta.

It was a rather successful shopping experience. They each got a little thing for themselves, or in Nerina's case several things. Amusingly enoug he wasn't finished. While Nerina was seeking out for herself something to manage her hair, Eric had wandered off to a different store to get something else for her.

But first, they had food to eat. "Coffee is usually bitter," Eric explained, "you can put some sugar in it if you like." Eric didn't drink coffee really, he wasn't a fan of caffeinated drinks, but dandelion coffee was one of the few exceptions. They both shared in a cup, and Eric demonstrated the fine art of dropping itty bitty teaspoons of raw sugar into a hot drink. Nothing to it.

He sipped his drink, and the meals arrived not long after. "Fantastic," Eric grinned, "I'm quite starving."

As Nerina was snoozing, their meals had come. Luckily, Eric gave her a demonstration of how to drink coffee if it was too bitter. She sniffed it as though she would smell how bitter the java really was, but she did not take a sip. Nerina had ordered a cappucino for herself. She scooped up some of the milk foam, the parts with chocolate on it. There was a thin layer of milk foam on her upper lip and before she could lick it clean, she decided that sharing was better, and pressed her lips against Eric for a milky kiss.

"I'm still a little tired." The kiss was a perk-me-up.

"Hm!" She seemed pleased with the milk foam experience. After it was gone, she copied Eric and dumped a heaped teaspoon of sugar into her drink and stirred it. The coffee didn't feel like it was making her more awake, but she at least felt a little more alert having something in her system. Her soup arrived first, and it came with a slice of white bread and a garnish on top, with a swirl of cream. Eric's bruschetta arrived shortly afterwards.

Eric laughed right before she finished her kiss, leaning in to make her efforts a little easier. If she was tired, a kiss was definitely a good stimulant. Eric licked his lips afterwards, enjoying the foamy residue.

They enjoyed their meal peacefully. He wasn't one for making long conversation in the middle of chewing through bites of food, especially not when he had something planned to do with Nerina. The girl also finished her clam chowder pretty quickly. Once his plate was cleared, Eric brought out the small box from out of his shopping bag.

"I have something I want to ask you, honey." Eric grinned.

"Oh. My God." Nerina's mouth gaped open wide. She didn't even know how old she was. Or he was. Whatever. There was going to be a huge diamond ring in there! Tiffany's and everything.

Eric smirked. However, the box wasn't from Tiffany's. It would have been a light aquamarine colour otherwise. He opened its lid and presented Nerina not with a diamond ring, but with a platinum watch and sapphire glass, its face containing small diamonds. It may not have been an engagement ring, but it certainly wasn't cheap.

"Would you like to practice telling the time?"

Nerina's face fell a little when she saw that it was much bigger than a ring. At first she thought it was a comically gigantic ring, but she was almost right in that regard. Still, with the shiny diamonds that were present in the watch face, she seemed as thrilled as a six-year-old girl receiving a glitter pony toy.

"Ooh." She held the box in her hand delicately and moved it around, as though she was trying to catch the light on the reflection just right. Instead, she was moving around the tiny littly diamonds that swirled around in the clock face.

"This doesn't look like it's swim-compatible." It definitely wasn't a sporty Baby-G. "But sure, let's practice!"

She didn't put the watch on, but kept it in its box. She was afraid she would forget to take it off before she would go into the water.

Eric chuckled a bit at her reaction. She seemed more enamoured with the small diamonds moving around in the face than trying the watch on and seeing how it fit. He did not blame her, however. Eric would probably have done the same if he owned such a watch.

"It's not a U-boat, babe. Not everything has to be waterproof." Eric laughed. Nerina might have preferred a waterproof watch, but he didn't know what she would want one for when underwater. She might also dive too deep for the watch, and it would stop working. Knowing when the sun would rise? That wasn't hard.

"So, what time is it now?" He had her look at the watch face and try to figure it out. Eric was nice enough to set the time before they put it in the box.

"... U-boat? Undersea boat?" How could boats swim underwater? Unfortunately for Nerina, Germans took some nouns in their language quite literally. Perhaps a little too literally. She dismissed the Underwater boats, without realizing they were simply submarines. Right now, she had to focus on telling the time. She knew where the little hand was pointing. That was easy.

"One..."

The big hand was pointing at a time that was between nine and ten, at least, that was what the marked indicators suggested. Only twelve, three, six and nine were numbered. The rest were marked.

"One forty seven? One forty eight?"

“Yeah, it's like a submarine,” Eric explained. Or well, it was a submarine. He didn't know if Nerina understood what those were specifically, but he thought highly enough of her to figure it out. It probably would have been worth mentioning that they were literally submarines, but it was too late for that matter.

His attention was on Nerina trying to figure out the time. She was definitely slow in reading an analog clock, but Eric was happy she could read it accurately. Nerina clearly wasn't totally incapable of reading a watch.

“That's right. Somewhere, around there.” Eric looked at the time on his phone. It was one forty eight.

“Which means we've been on a date for how how long, now?” It was a pretty simple question actually, since they met at noon. So the answer was just 'one hour and forty eight minutes'.

“That's not really a long time, so I'd like to do some more with you. Anywhere you'd like to go?”

"We've been dating for an hour... And forty-eight minutes," Nerina replied. After getting the first question right, she felt like she was on a roll. Now she got this one right too!

"I got it right," Nerina said happily. "Thank you so much Eric. I'll treasure this watch forever." She closed the velvet-lined box and held it to her chest giddily, like it was a token of his love. Even though they had only been dating for an hour and forty eight minutes.

"I don't want to go anywhere just yet. Actually..." She put the boxed watch in the shopping bag. It looked as luxurious as the department store they stepped in, with cord bag handles and a ribbon detail. It looked nicer than her netted sack that she caught fish in and used as a handbag.

"I barely know anything about you, Eric. And you... Probably don't know much about me either." She put a hand to the side of her cheek delicately, her eyes averting away from him in shame. "We're already kissing and I haven't even met your parents or your family. It's, It's wrong."

Eric was more than pleased to hear Nerina enjoyed his gift. Although they had only been dating for under two hours, they did know each other for a little while now. Albeit she was right, they didn't know so much about each other as they did each other's lips.

However, her suggestion very quickly through Eric for a loop. "My parents, I don't think..." Well, even if he wanted to have a long term relationship with her, Eric couldn't help but dread the idea of Nerina meeting his grandfather. So long as Jean-Pierre haunted the halls of his home, Eric would probably never bring any girl to his parents.

"You don't usually meet one's parents so soon, hon," Eric smiled apologetically, reaching out to take Nerina's hand. That was at least a better answer than saying he didn't want her to meet them at all. "It's not wrong," Eric protested. That much he thought was true, not just because he wanted to keep her in his arms.
