Jack blinked. He shouldn't have been surprised at Sushi's request; the merboy was basically a fish out of water so it would make sense that he would want to go swimming. The cat fae grinned, looking out to the pool then back at Sushi with eyes seeming to sparkle.

"Absolutely! You can absolutely take a swim! Do you need swim trunks or anything? What am I saying, of course. They're probably in the boxes in the trunk. Let's go unload the boxes into your room and then we'll take a swim in the pool!"

Jack turned, ready to go unload the car before Sushi spoke up and mentioned it was okay and his pants were appropriately suited for swimming. The fae gave a curious look, then grinned. "Well, in that case, go ahead and dive in! I'll go change really quick and join in!" He gives Sushi a small thumbs up before walking to his room to change into appropriate swimwear. This was exciting, being able to swim with his adopted son, bonding over something that he (assumedly) liked to do.

He'd change quickly, returning in a pair of black swim trunks and two towels in his arms. The prosthetic was uncovered, slightly shimmering in the light of the room.

He was allowed to swim and Jack was going to join him? This was great, he did prefer swimming with someone to swimming alone.

His body didn't move much to react, but a cheerful "Okay!" did come from the speaker on his helmet. And as Jack went off to change, Sushi began changing himself. First he unbuttoned his raincoat, letting it fall to the ground around his boots. Then he stepped forward, removing his feet rather easily from the yellow boots. Then came the last step. He unhooked his helmet and let loose the water inside, giving himself a refreshing shower in the process. After setting the helmet down, he held his breath and carefully lowered himself into the water.

It was nice. His body always felt refreshed to be in water after spending a while outside it. He descended to the deepest part of the pool and began to swim around. He'd remain underwater until Jack returned and then a while longer. Eventually, his body would be seen coming to the surface before his head popped up. Treading water, Sushi stared at Jack again. He was a little clearer now that he wasn't looking at him through his helmet was off. Before long, Sushi's look of curiosity would shift to a simple smile.

"The water is super nice!" His voice sounded less like a radio now.

He'd seen Jack's arm and was fairly certain that wasn't natural, but he wasn't so sure it was okay to ask about it.

Jack locked eyes with Sushi, slightly taken aback at the merboy's appearance. It was strange, having seen a picture of him before but actually seeing it face to face was very different. He set down the towels before a devious grin began to form. Jack's tail swished side to side as the fae ran and jumped, screaming "Cannonball!" as he balled up in the air and crashed into the water with a dramatic splash. He'd surface after a few moments, shaking his head this way and that and flicking water around.

"Nothing beats a perfectly temped pool of water, huh, Sushi?" He laughed, holding out his prosthetic hand for a high five. After a few moments, he switched it up, dunking the prosthetic back under the water and holding up his other hand. "Probably makes more sense you don't want to touch the prosthetic, huh?" He gave a small smile, slightly embarrassed.

Sushi gasped as Jack shouted and jumped into the water. He knew what cannonball meant, bracing for the impact. The result was nothing but a splash and a brief wave that Sushi rode while a giggle escaped him.

He ducked underwater then popped up again closer to Jack. He stared at the prosthetic arm for a moment before he was about to high five it, but it seemed Jack picked up on the hesitation. Sushi then slowly high fived the other hand before tilting his head.

“What is the prosthetic? Is that your arm?”

Jack gave a small nod. "It's a replacement for my arm. I used to have two regular arms but then due to an unfortunate circumstance, I ended up having to get the prosthetic to replace it!" The prosthetic slowly resurfaces, allowing Sushi to get a proper close look. The arm, despite having an almost metallic sheen and smoothness to it, was actually made of some kind of wood. The ivory white color was offset with intricate golden patterns woven in to give it a very artistic feel. Oddly enough, despite just coming out of the water, the wood appeared to be completely dry.

He moves it a little closer for Sushi to touch if the merboy so desired. "It's pretty neat, huh?" He grins, slowly wiggling the fingers. Despite having had the prosthetic for so long, it still felt strange to move it about. It felt like his hand, yet at the same time, felt completely foreign to him.

“Due to an unfortunate circumstance?...” Sushi didn’t completely understand what that meant. He did understand that a prosthetic was a replacement body part though at least. And there it was again. He examined it as Jack brought it back out of the water. “It is neat, yes.”

He silently wondered about it. Having an arm removed would probably hurt a lot. He questioned if the arm still hurt and how the prosthetic even worked. Could Jack still feel things with his wooden arm? And how could he control it? Despite these questions floating around in his head, Sushi didn’t ask. Not yet at least.

"Yes, unfortunate circumstance. Hmm, how do I explain this... Ah!" Jack grinned, slowly swimming circles around Sushi. "Let me tell you a story, my boy. So, once upon a time, before I settled down here on the island permanently, I used to go on adventures through all kinds of dimensions. I would rescue princesses, fight monsters, and occasionally get into some wacky hijinks and pranks. I am a fae after all." He smirked before continuing.

"On my adventures, I met all kinds of people great and dastardly. But each adventure was amazing and beautiful. During one of my adventures, I met a young man like me who also went on adventures. We met in various places, sometimes as friends, other times as adversaries. One day, I met with him and we met some bad guys! It was super dangerous but we got away!"

Jack stopped his swimming, now lazily floating. A bittersweet smile formed as he looked to the merboy. "It didn't go perfectly and... well, now I have a cool magic arm!" He laughed, holding up the arm and wiggling the fingers. "Either way, it's not all bad. Now, Sushi, how about you show me how fast you can swim? I bet you're pretty fast!"

Jack decided it was probably best not to tell Sushi the whole truth just yet. Technically everything he said was true, but there were many other factors to that day that a twelve year old shouldn't have to think about. For now, it was about enjoying their first day together.

A story? Sushi did like stories. He treaded water and listened.

The things Jack did, were honestly kind of frightening. Even with a word here or there that he didn’t understand, he could mostly figure everything out, but some of it just sounded dangerous. The part about finding a friend was nice, but then the idea of bad guys was not. And then from that bit about how it didn’t go perfectly, Sushi could only guess that they took Jack’s arm somehow.

Sushi had questions. How they took his arm and where this friend of his was? But Jack easily took his mind off it before he could ask them.

“Oh. I can swim fast!” He swam casually to one side of the pool then shouted to Jack. “Watch!” Then he started swimming to the opposite side. His form was close to that of breaststroke, though he didn’t come up for air at any point. In terms of speed, he was fast, but not as fast as a fish or most other merfolk, just a lot faster than a regular person his age would be capable of.

When his hand hit the other side, his head popped up from the water.

Jack grinned as Sushi swam very quickly to the far end of the pool. Credit where credit was due; his boy was a very fast swimmer, even for a merfolk. Or that's what he'd tell himself, anyway. He didn't know a lot of merfolk so who knew? It didn't matter in the end since Sushi seemed happy and that was the most important thing.

That, and he didn't have to continue the story any further.

"Hey Sushi, I'll swim to you and then we can have a race!" He called before swimming very casually to the end next to the merboy. Once he reached the end, he surfaced and shook his hair wildly with a laugh. "So, we'll race to the other end of the pool and see who's faster. You can say when to go."

The cat fae got into a proper swimming position, ready to shove off when Sushi gave the call.

Sushi smiled at the idea of a race. “Okay!” He remained where he was as Jack made his way over and giggled when he shook his hair.

He nodded. “Okay. I will say ready, set and go and when I say go that is when we go.”

Sushi smiled again, clinging to the side of the pool rather than getting into a proper starting position. “Ready, and set, and go!”

He pushed off from the wall and started swimming once again. This time his form was a little less elegant but he moved a bit faster. His arms were moving as if he was doing breaststroke but his legs were something more akin to freestyle. He kept swimming until his hand hit the wall, then his head popped out of the water.
