The sun had just begun to rise on the sports field as Travis stood in the center of the sports field. He had gotten up earlier and went on a jog which turned into a flight around the campus in his chimera form. He now stood with a book on pyromancy ready to practice. He opted to take the book with him when he'd left home to come to the academy. Of course, his dream would just be to find some old sagey guy who could teach him ultra secret fire arts. He had doubts on something like that actually happening but there was probably someone in the staff he could ask at some point.

Fire breaths are easy when you're not in a human form. He channeled the natural energy into his hands, causing them to ignite. It felt good being able to channel the energy like this. "Alright, fireballs," he said to himself forcefully shaping the flame into crude unstable spheres. He tossed them into the air and watched in disappointment as they fizzled out. "Well that sucked," he frowned and tried repeating the process. One day I'll be able to summon meteors from the sky, he'd distracted himself to the point that his jacket actually ignited. "Crap!" Travis quickly threw off the jacket, stamping out the flames when he found himself launching himself into the air with a stream of fire, incinerating the jacket in the process. The young chimera landed flat on his back hard. Maybe it was time to enlist some help.

Darius liked the quietness of morning. Even at the place like the Academy which was usually overflowing with students there was silence to be found if one just remembered to rise before the said students. That was not why he took his walks so early though. He didn't really mind the students, or their noise. It was just a habit born of need during the school year that he didn't care to break during the actual break as he would need it all over come September. Thus Darius took his early morning and evening walks and enjoyed the quiet that reminded him of his home, as well as an occasional drunken student just coming back from a party. It was to be expected. It was summer break after all and summer breaks are meant for partying.

What wasn't expected though was fireballs fizzling out in the sky and students suddenly exploding into flying fireballs themselves. Darius ran towards the center of the field before he could even completely process what was going on.

''Are you alright?'', he asked, putting a hand on the fallen boy's shoulder and frowning slightly at him. ''Have you burned yourself? Broken anything in the fall?'', this was his first concern. What in the world the student was doing would come later, but it would definitely come.

Travis sat up, a little dazed and a little confused. The only thing that he knew for sure was his fire was going to take a while to figure out. How did ancient people learn this stuff before there were masters? He felt a hand land on his shoulder and then a voice inquiring his condition. "I think the only thing that's hurting is my pride, sir," Travis answered turning to the person he assumed to be a faculty member.

It didn't seem like he was going to get into trouble, but he figured an explanation was warranted. The groundskeeper was probably going to hate him for the scorch marks left on the field. At least he didn't set the field ablaze. He prayed this guy wasn't the groundskeeper. "You see, I was trying to improve my pyromancy," he started, "It's not exactly going well, as you can see."

Darius was just about to ask what in the world this boy thought he was doing now that he was sure the boy wasn't hurt when he, surprisingly, got his answer even before he asked. Frowning, Darius offered his hand to the boy in order to help him on his feet before continuing his inquiry.

''Here?'', he said, both his voice and face obviously sharp and frowning as he did so. ''On the field? Without any help?'' It was not uncommon for students to want to practice their powers on their own once they reached a certain level, but this boy didn't seem to know what he was doing.

''Are you aware how dangerous that is? You could have hurt yourself'', Darius scolded the boy, his frown growing ever deeper. He did not like seeing students hurt, especially at the hands of their own powers. ''What were you even trying to do?'' It was something far beyond his level, no doubt. He was just wondering what exactly.

Travis stood and took his scolding with no complaints or response. The man was genuinely concerned for his safety, he could tell that much. His mother would have checked to see if he was alright then laughed at him for messing up so badly. Honestly, the scolding was kind of nice. The only thing he could bring himself to utter was, "Um I'm sorry."

When asked what he was doing he had to think. He was trying to make fireballs. Something he sort understood, but something was destabilizing his mana flow. Probably the fact that he was a chimera had something to do with that, but it may also be a lack of discipline. "Well, I was attempting fireballs, but it's not exactly working out," he began his explanation. He had a feeling this teacher would understand. "I'm a chimera so breathing fire in my other form is natural, he went and picked up the book his mother had sent with him when he left, "The witch part in me kicked in a few months ago so I really don't have any skill with actual fire magic."

''At least you haven't actually hurt yourself'', Darius said, his frown slowly disappearing as the boy explained himself to him. ''However, if that truly is so, you have no business trying to make fireballs. They are hard to form, and even harder to control. Has anybody taught you the basic?'', Darius asked, getting somewhat worried again, already guessing that the answer to that question would be no from what the boy had told him.

Darius classes always had a fair share of fire users in them. At points, there have been classes than more than half of his students were actually those needing to learn how to control fire, it, for some reason, being the predominant element among the gifted humans. They had always been eager too, like this boy, to start throwing fireballs and similar 'cool' stuff. Darius, however, always, always thought them the basic first, which was how to control the fire in general, an external flame they did not produce, lest things like this happened. Setting yourself on fire is not as uncommon as it may sound if one does not know how to control the fire he summons.

''I am going to guess not'', he said then, answering your own question. ''What is it that you have there?'', he said pointing to the book.

So, we haven't talked about actual teaching, so here is a paragraph of what I had in mind-tell me if that does not fit with your idea about your characters powers?

((Yeah that works fine I kinda need him to er suck with fire initially and just kinda progress))

"Oh this?" he looked down at the book and frowned. His mother probably thought it would be a nice joke. Now that he thought about it, everything in there was pretty advanced. "My wicked witch of a mother sent this with me to help me practice," he explained, handing the book over to the teacher. She'd hear get a mouthful about it later. "She's not exactly a traditional mother," he added as he recalled the day she taught him how to fly in his chimera form.

"But to answer your question, no," he sighed. The words "thanks Mom" floated in the back of his head. He had a feeling this teacher just happened to be the kind of instructor he was looking for. "My name's Travis King, I take it you teach people how to control their more wild abilities?"

''I teach Elemental Control, yes'', Darius said as he turned the book the boy had handed him in his hand, before carefully opening it and reading a few pages here and there. As he had thought. Everything in it was above a beginner's level, some of the things well and truly so. The boy was lucky he had not hurt himself in a more serious manner than loosing a jacket.

''I can certainly see that'', Darius said, closing the book as the boy-Travis, as he had introduced himself, told him that his mother wasn't a traditional mother. ''Traditionally mothers do not want their children to set themselves on fire.'' Not even his mother was like that, and they were dragons and thus not really capable of setting themselves on fire in a way that would hurt them.

''My name is Darius'', he said then, finally offering his name back to the boy. ''If you wish, I can help you with your powers. I'm already helping a few students during the summer so they can be reading for regular classes once the school starts, one more really is no problem.'' And it wouldn't have been a problem even if Darius didn't already have students. He didn't really mind helping the children during the summer. If anything, it helped him not spent what free days he did have simply lazing around or walking and flying around the Island, thinking.

"Well yeah, there are definitely better mothers. I think she just tried showing me the way she learned," Defending his mother wasn't something he generally took to doing, but it seemed like an appropriate thing to do. They were essentially all they had. They were outcasts within their community and most witches would keep their distance from his mother. There was the matter of her making her own son into a chimera.

"But seriously, thank you. I was worried I'd be stuck with that book until classes started up," he smiled slightly. Now at least he could get some supervision and constructive criticism. He'd pick up his mother's book after he's truly mastered the basics. "So what's first on the list?"

Hearing the boy defend his mother's ways to him, Darius realised he had left himself say things he really shouldn't have. ''Of course'', he said, sighing slightly and frowning at himself for letting himself speak without thinking. ''I apologize. I simply dislike seeing students get hurt, especially by their own power, especially due to the lack of training or trying to do things which are too complicated for them.''

''As for what is first on the list'', Darius continued speaking after a moment of silence. ''I'd say it would be to see how well you can control an external source of fire, something that you haven't made, and then going on from there until you master it completely. Once you can control fire in general you will be much less likely to hurt yourself with your own flames'', Darius said, inspecting their surroundings as he spoke. ''That really shouldn't be done here, though, too much danger of setting something else on fire if you lose control. The classroom I teach in is much safer and better for things such as this.''
