They told Maris she should be happy here.
In some ways, the island was everything she'd wanted. She got to walk around the outside world, without having to keep herself secret. She got to attend school! She always wanted to do that. In many ways, the island was the kind of paradise they had tried to sell to her.
But Maris knew it wasn't all it was cut out to be. The scouts already took her dad from her, and even though the nice people at the correction facility tried to make her feel better, they'd still imprisoned her. She wasn't about to let her guard down. There were dangerous people all over the island, the kind she'd hunted down in the past, it wouldn't do to get comfortable.
She slithered into the cafeteria during lunchtime, tugging uncomfortably at the collar of her uniform, glancing around the room as she tried to find a quiet spot to eat. As she was doing so, her eyes eventually settled on another redheaded student who she recognised as Andrasta. She'd heard about the student council when she'd arrived, but only really knew about her in passing. Maris had heard some rumours though, like the kinds of things she used to say about the scouts when she was younger, and it made her curious.
Plus, according to the cartoons she used to watch, the student council had basically all the power in high school. So trying to learn more about the President would probably be useful.
So, she waited until it looked like the girl was alone, before slithering up to her. It took her a moment to actually say anything, however. She'd only spoken face to face with one person for most of her life, greetings were still hard.
"Hello!" She eventually said, awkwardly, voice high pitched but raspy. "Are you Andrasta?"
