Finnegan looked out into the expanse of the Academy garden, adjusting his sunhat, rolling up the sleeves of his work shirt, and grinning wide. This was his pride and glory, something he'd tended to for his forty years working here, and his time at school even before that, as a student apprentice gardener. He cared for all the flowers and trees, as well as his fresh fruit, vegetables, and berries.

Many plants were in full bloom or bearing their fruit now, and it was right about harvest time. The tomatoes had grown particularly enticing, along with the blueberries and strawberries. He had quite a few baskets out for collecting purposes. After that, it'd be the usual watering of all the plants, and perhaps getting some of the sunflowers to put in nice vases in the school and brighten everyone's day. Sunflowers were some of his favorites. Finn didn't have any least favorite plants, but he definitely had his favorites.

Today, he'd extended a little invitation out to one Aubrey Bateman to visit and assist him with a few of the garden tasks. He'd run into her mother and heard about the little munchkin. He'd heard about her from other sources, as well. She was a feisty kid. Finn rather thought he might take her off the elementary school staff's hands for a while, and give her something stimulating to do.

Really, he thought the best jobs to offer small children were ones they could really get involved in, and then ended up rewarded by. Gardening was a wonderful thing. You grew your own food, then you got to eat it, and the taste was made all the sweeter with the knowledge that you provided it for yourself. Not to mention, you got to spend time in the sun, with cool outdoor breeze, birds singing, and beautiful scenery. It was a pleasure all around.

Taking big steps in her rain boots, Aubrey found herself traversing a path unfamiliar to her. As a big-girl first grader, she made it her priority to know every inch of the place she got her education from. Today however was a bit different, for she had been invited to tend to a garden on the school’s property that she had never heard of. It would be an adventure for her, but since this was new territory, she wasn’t going alone for now.

Since she had a break between classes, Loralei had elected to take her daughter down to make sure she was safe. There were questionable things on the campus, and powers far greater than even the most magically-inclined six year old. No way in hell was she going to allow anything bad to happen to her little Aubrey, so hand-in-hand they walked down together.

"Remember to be on your best behavior, okay Aubrey?" The mother firmly stated, looking down briefly at her daughter’s blank eyes. "Mr. Leighton has been around here for a very long time. He’s a nice man, but please don’t go too crazy with your powers. I’m not sure his heart can do many more surprises." Did he have a heart? She wasn’t sure. Still, she didn’t want her daughter to somehow be the end of the 40 year reign of a well-respected professor. That was another tick in the Bateman family’s reputation that Loralei absolutely could not afford.

”I’ll try mommy.”

Loralei sighed. She supposed that was all she could do. However, she held hope that something like this would be a good learning experience. She already liked dirt and flowers and throwing mud at mean children, so she figured this would be a constructive use of her time and skills. As they neared, Lori looked back down and smiled a bit. Ruffling her hair, only for her daughter to react in time to hastily try to straighten it back out again with her tiny hands. "I’m sure you’ll have a lot of fun though. Make sure to pick out something good."

Fortunately, the walk was safe and short, as they had arrived to the nicely tended garden. Aubrey already looked pretty excited as she looked around at everything that was ready. "Hey Finn." Loralei greeted, waving a bit with her free hand. "Thanks again for letting Aubrey spend some time with you. Aubrey, say hi to Mr. Leighton."

”Hi.”

Hopefully, she’d warm up quickly to him. Aubrey wasn’t a huge fan of authority figures.
