(OOC: It's ok! I can get impatient when it comes to stuff like this, but I'm learning. I'll be more patient next time, I promise!)

Wind's eyebrows raised at that.
"Really? That sounds like fun! Not the sort of thing I'd be into, but I guess if you like it, to each his own. I read a lot, too. Are you much of a reader?"
She kept looking around, fascinated by everything there was to look at. She was getting really excited about being here. When she went to touch a nearby door, a jolt of ice shot out and splattered against the door. She immediately held her hands close to her, looked down and muttered,
"Damn. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do that. If my emotions get high, I can't control my powers very well."
She waited with bated breath, hoping that he wouldn't say anything negative.

"Oh yes! It can be really fun! Especially if the boy is of the small, cute variety."

The question of gender preference was often forgotten in the wake of Lelei's general appearance and attitude. He was a walking, talking shark after all. No one ever stopped to wonder what a giant land shark was attracted to, so it almost always came as a surprise that he had a thing for cute boys. Perhaps he liked that they were the polar opposite of what he was.

"No. I didn't used to read all that much. But I've recently started to get into reading--"

Lelei had little problem with Wind poking around during their tour, but a flash of powers made him stop and examine the door. He leaned over to look closely at her results.

"Ah~ Not a problem, Miss Wise. Learning control is why you're here after all! So... Ice powers, huh? Why don't you tell me a little about what you can do."

Wind looked up, surprised that she'd revealed her powers to someone who was not her family or one of the castle servants and they'd been fine about it. She sat down against the nearest wall and took a deep breath. She pulled up her shirtsleeve & held her arm out.
"See this tattoo? It means I have an ice power. Although what roses have to do with ice, I don't know. I have to be careful with it, because if my emotions are high or I'm sick I can't control it as well as I can any other time. I was learning back at home. I have a wind and some shapeshifting powers, too, but I'd rather wait until I'm in a classroom to show those. That's how I got my name, because of my powers. I have a blue spiral tattoo on my back, too, but that's easier to cover up, so most people don't see it."
The ice had turned to water and had started dripping on the floor, so Wind walked over, took a roll of paper towels from her backpack and started cleaning it up. She was used to this, the cleanup part.

"Hm. Interesting... So the tattoo itself doesn't give the power. It only, pardon the expression, marks you as possessing it. Correct?"

Lelei was starting to feel a little sorry for Wind. The poor girl seemed so exasperated with her powers, tired and just done with the whole deal. Sitting against the wall and calming herself, she could easily have just been trying to even herself out--she did say it was affected by her emotions--but still... He wanted to reach out and pat her or something, but that seemed condescending.

When she started to clean up, he too grabbed a towel and helped.

"Miss Wise, I still want you to know that this is a safe place. Here you will learn that your powers are not a burden. Mistakes will happen, of course, but they are not failures on your part. Believe me."

(OOC: Critical, I love how sweet he's being towards her! I wish I could find a guy like that in real life!)

Wind smiled and replied,
"Thank you, Lelei. Yes, it just means I have the power. And, yeah, I know they're not a burden, but sometimes, it feels like they are. Maybe once I learn to really control them, they won't feel so much like that."
She wanted to reach out and touch him, but instead she tossed the now-wet paper towel into the nearest trash can and stood up, holding out her hand.
"It was nice to meet you and you've been really sweet about everything, but I really need to get my dorm room now, I don't want to carry all this stuff around anymore, I need to unload it. If you'd like to show me where they are, I don't mind. But I really need to unpack," she said nicely.
She waited, staring intently at him, hand held out in friendship. Her phone rang, but she ignored it and let it go to voicemail.

A failure to properly control one's own powers was a situation Lelei had fortunately never found himself in. Everything about him that could have been construed as "powers" were simply natural characteristics of being. Breathing and living underwater was obvious, as he was an aquatic creature. His ability to sense living things from a distance was a natural extension of his shark "sixth sense" that even regular sharks possessed. His strength was just a result of his training. None of it was ever at risk of getting out of his control.

But that lack of experience did not stop him from sympathizing with all the young men and women at the Academy struggling with their abilities. They would need all the support he could offer, and he was happy to oblige.

"I suppose you can get a feel for the school yourself by just walking around during classes. So okay, just tell me your Dorm number and I'll lead the way.

With his own toothy smile, he took Wind's tiny hand in his and gave it a firm shake.

If you'd like to continue, we'll keep it in this thread even if we go to the dorms."

(OOC:I don't mind opening up a thread in the dorms, either way. I'm leaving it up to you. Just make sure you PM me and let me know if you do.)

IC:
Wind felt his huge hand engulf her small one. She replied,
"It's 157, my 3 favorite numbers. It's like they read my mind. They probably have a lot of mind readers here."
As she started toward the dorms, she looked down at her phone.
"Oh, it's my mom. I told her I'd call her to let her know I got here safe, but I forgot. I almost never do that. If she has any powers, it's probably incessantly worrying about us," she quipped, then asked,
"Do you have any family, Lelei?"
She took her other bag off her shoulder and just let it dangle down beside her as she walked, now only occasionally staring at everything.

Wind was a good girl. Lelei was happy to have met her.

"I'm not that current on the school rules, but I think mind reading might be against them. Maybe they have a spell blocking psychic stuff like that. Hm..."

The question on the way to the Dorms gave Lelei some pause. For once, he seemed to be putting some thought into his answer, or if he should answer at all. Family. It was a subject he had not thought about in a long time, and perhaps it was because he had little in the way of family life, at least in the same sense that Humans thought about it. Not to mention that talking about family would mean talking about his life before coming to the land.

In the end, he sighed and thought he had nothing to lose by being honest.

"I do have family, I suppose... We sharks, though, don't really spend time together. You're born and you're pretty much on your own. So not much time to make a bond. But we grow up fast and merge with the community quickly, so there's that..."

Wind smiled and said,
"Well, at least I don't have to worry about mind reading, thank God."
She looked down while she tried to think of what to say. While she was thinking, her bag slipped out of her hand and fell to the floor, busting open and all her books and some clothes fell out. She hurried to capture and return everything to her bag. She exclaimed,
"My bag, crap! I really need to get that slipping strap fixed! I was going to do it today, but I didn't have time before we left! I'm sorry I'm making such trouble for you. My self-esteem's not the greatest and sometimes my powers just make it worse. Maybe it'll get better here."

Hey. Hey..."

While Wind scrambled to repack all of her belongings and generally get herself all flustered, Lelei put a big ole hand on her back and tried to steady her in both body and mind. He loomed over the girl, even as he knelt to aid her, but it was not a scary or intimidating motion. It was more like he was creating a comforting bubble or roof with his own body. How much comfort she would take would be subject to her feelings of having a giant shark man trying to ease her anxiety though.

"Remember what I keep saying? Everything will be fine."

He helped scoop her clothes and books back into her bag, and making a semi-conscious effort to not make her more anxious by touching any unmentionable or personal belongings.

"You need to stop thinking every little mistake is a bad thing. Sometimes, it's just a... thing. Something that happens. And if something actually bad happens, you can come find me.

Now! Lets get you settled in your new dorm, hm?"
