“That amulet is magical,” Chloe told her. “Among other things, it helps him avoid the temptation to kill and eat people. You actually made him a lot more dangerous by taking it from him. So, bare minimum, I’m gonna need that back.

“As for the rest of my plan… what I have so far, I guess, is I’m going to train him to behave, using my powers. I don’t like explaining my powers to people; it’s sort of a personal thing, but it should be enough for you to know that keeping him relatively calm and under control is a side effect. And an actually useful one, in this case.”

Chloe hoped she wouldn’t have to explain her powers to Guinevere. The only person on this island who knew so far was Lochlann, because he agreed to let her regularly drain his life force.

“Beyond that, I guess I just wanted to have a drink with you and talk to you about him." She shrugged. "Maybe I can learn something that'll help me make him a functional person again. Hell, maybe you'll convince me that this is all a stupid idea and that I should just kill him."

“Well…” Chloe hesitated, quickly turning it over in her mind, struggling to see how this wouldn’t be obvious or why it would be a huge problem. “He told me. About the stolen amulet, mostly. He was kind of vague about your history together beyond that, aside from the fact that mutual attempted homicide was involved.”

Chloe shut up for a moment as the waiter brought her cappuccino. She thanked him, then started stirring a packet of sweetener into it.

“I figured I’d ask about other things if you’d let me, but really this is about the amulet. The longer you hold on to it, the more likely it is that someone’s going to die." She furrowed her eyebrows. "I mean, that bothers you, right? The fact that a thing you're doing could cause an innocent person to die?"

The biggest flaw in Lochlann's plan--besides the fact that the entire plan was horrible to begin with--was that the Cabyll-Ushtey did not know how to use a cell phone.

He was in Guinevere's apartment, again. He used the same trick to get in last time, a borrowed delivery uniform, a serious expression, saying "I'm sorry, m'am, but this isn't the sort of package I can just leave outside. If it gets stolen I'm not only held liable, but I could lose my job--"

Lochlann was wearing gloves this time, too. He was being so, so careful. He didn't need another repeat of what happened last time.

He searched through her apartment cautiously, his fingers trembling, using dish towels to open drawers and holding his breath, prepared each god damn time to have something go horribly wrong.

He couldn't find it, though. He refused to believe that Guin would keep it on her at all times--why would she? It was a small glass trinket. It met nothing to her.

Fuck. He needed a drink. It was the only thing he could think of to get his hands to stop shaking.

That's when he saw it.

It was hidden right in plain sight, someplace so easy to overlook that no one even needed to bother with a lock and key. He grabbed it, sliding it against his chest, and left, in such a hurry that he was oblivious to the fact that his student ID had slipped out.

When he was outside, he texted Chloe.

Or....he tried to. The first message was blank, the second one was probably a picture of his shoes or maybe his jeans, and the third message finally said I got it.

It wasn't his amulet.

But it was a bargaining chip.

“At least stay long enough to pay for your drink, Guinevere.” Chloe sounded exasperated. “I’m not paying for it.” The waiter hadn’t given Guin her check yet, so they still had a moment.

Chloe stared at Guin for a few more seconds. Then, she laughed. “Now, here’s where I fucked up: I assumed you’re capable of basic human decency.” She shook her head. “All I want to know now is, do you even know what that amulet does?”

Her phone vibrated three times over the course of her saying that. She pulled it out and looked at it, noting that there were three new text messages from someone her phone called “MLP.” The most recent message said, ‘I got it.’

Chloe’s eyes closed and opened again, taking slightly longer than a normal blink would. “Alright,” she shrugged and muttered to herself. That works too. She stowed her phone away.

If Chloe knew ahead of time that Lochlann was using her as a distraction, she might not have agreed to it. She hadn’t met Guinevere at the time.
