Konpeitō was almost about to put his hand down when Osmond held it. His body turned a shade pinker as he thought this over. Unsure of how to respond, he went to what he did best: he joked about it.

"Oh? I don't care either, but does this mean you're holding my hand simply because you want to? Do you miss the softness of my fur?" he teased with a purr, holding his and Osmond's hand up. That was when he noticed the change. He forced himself back to normal, hoping it wasn't anything obvious enough to be commented on.

From the side of his eye, he could see the instructor giving the two a look. Somewhere between "Take it outside" and "We're closing up."

Oz glanced away, unsure how to interpret the pinkening of Kon. The joke brought his attention back, and was easier to react and focus on. "You're the one who offered." He said, and it was a weak excuse. The fur on Kon's hands and forearms were soft though. Shit. Oz caught the look on their instructor's face and gently tugged on Kon's hand to lead them out.

"Where did you want to eat? Pick a place and I'll buy." Wherever Kon would pick would be fine by him. No matter what the food was, so long as it looked good or tasty it wouldn't offer any nutrition.

Konpeitō gave an apologetic glance at the instructor as he was led out.

" La Réserve sounds so good r—Oh, that's too expensive. What about Owen's Oven Fresh Meatery, if you're not squeamish of various types of meat? Oh wait, you've been here your entire life." He laughed. "Anyway, I'm craving for that kraken sweet bread is."

"If that's what you wish then that's where we'll go." Oz said, silently grateful Kon skipped on the fancier sounding place. They were dressed in gym clothes still after all. The Meatery would be fine, and Oz knew the location already. As they left the gym he tried not to think too much about holding Kon's hand. When had he turned back the wheel of time to when he was an awkward and sweaty teenager? Hells.

"Where does one ethically source Kracken?" He wondered out loud. Keep his mind off. . . things. "I suppose they can regrow limbs but where would they keep one and how fast to limbs regrow? Human I can understand with the amount of shape-changers or those with regeneration powers."

For all his rambling, Osmond's questions left Konpeitō stumped, his mouth opened for a second before closing to think. In the end, all he could think to say was, "I have no idea. I never paid much attention to the acquisition of meat other than hunts in the forest and ocean, sapient donors, and wanaals... Maybe there are more kraken in the ocean than we've realized."

Almost content to leave his answer there, his ears perked up. "Oh! What about animals acquired from space? Or alternate dimensions? I bet there are dimensional jumpers who bring in food. I've only heard of one..." probably because it was so unique of a job, "but there definitely has to be others. What with some restaurants bringing in all sorts of exotic body parts and blood for us to eat. And then there's, well, people like me who can change their species."

It seemed like one of those things about life on the island. You never thought too deeply about certain things, and often times one could never be sure if they really wished to know the truth or not. Often, it was best to leave things at face value. "I've no doubt the island has a deep and complex meat industry." Space and dimensional sourcing not withstanding, but Oz did see a chance to tease Kon some. "Perhaps people like you are more common than you thought.

"And they're the ones who turn into krackens or other exotic animals. Taking advantage of demand, making more money than you."

Konpeitō was ready to agree with Osmond. No doubt there were other people with shape-shifting and species-shifting as or more varied as his. Yet all that agreement went out the window when taking advantage of demand came up.

Typically, this was a tease Konpeitō wouldn't fall into. He knew he was being played with. But he also did a lot of research into his work and couldn't hold back the incoming essay wanting to burst out of him.

"You would think that, but working at the hospital has provided me a lot more benefits and money. It's one thing to turn into just any kraken with high quality meat to be sold on the market. It's another when a sapient kraken has lost a unique organ and needs a transplant as soon as possible. For obvious reasons, that puts me on both a stricter and unpredictable schedule." But he wasn't done yet. "My ability to learn fast lets me study up on new biology on the spot. Sometimes the body parts don't match perfectly, but it's often better than nothing. It gives extra time to find something better."

The smile Konpeitō wore wasn't teasing or playful. It was prideful with a touch of arrogance. "Those people can take advantage of those demands. I'm certain I'm making more money than them. I'm already donating to the Sanguine Society and Bleedr. I could crash the market if I wanted to."

Oz blinked, caught-off guard by Kon's passionate and detailed rant. It was kinda hot. Hells. "I had not considered that." Oz said, still mulling over everything Kon said. It was a lot to take in. He knew shifters would make donations to hospitals in clinics but it had not occurred to him that the job would require detail knowledge of biology. Something that should have been obvious in hindsight.

"My apologizes." Oz said, properly chided. And damn, he also liked that look Kon wore. "Ah, um, I would hope you have no plans to crash the market." He finished lamely. He tried to recover by going back to where this conversation started. "The bakery owner might be kind and tell us where he sources his kracken meat from and that would be one mystery solved."

Pride was about to give way to worry. Konpeitō knew he could go on long rambles. Most people he spoke to knew that. And oftentimes that left them quiet or awkward or just plain annoyed. He watched Osmond's expression carefully. No annoyance, no. A tinge of awkwardness?

"Nothing to apologize over," he replied cheerfully. "And that sounds like a plan! I hope it won't effect he mystery of the meatery. That's part of the fun. Good food, mysterious origins. But since it's been open for so long, I don't think we need to worry about the source of the meat being unethical or dangerous. Places here tend to rely on their shticks to draw people in."

"Should a meatery have mystery?" Oz questioned. A shady meat business didn't sound too appealing. . . but he supposed the mysterious origins would make for excellent nutrition for him. Nothing quite soured the appetite like not knowing exactly what one was consuming. "But yes, island consumers appreciate openness and honesty with product."

Ah, but perhaps business talk was boring. Ah, and he was still holding Kon's hand. This intimacy. . . it was entirely new to Oz. He had wondered if Kon was coming on to him, but now thought if he should, well, ask Kon out. Great, now he was really nervous.
