Dirt. Nothing but the cold ground, wrapping itself around her. It was all she could see, all she could feel. It's weight was nearly unbearable, like it was suffocating her. She wanted out of it. She wanted free from it. But she couldn't move. She couldn't scream. She couldn't breathe. It felt like she was trapped, trapped for all eternity.

While Nia lay in her bed, her nightmare consumed her mind. Her body lay there, flat on its back, trembling. Her lips were parted slightly, as if trying to make some noise but nothing came from them. Part of the girl felt that what was happening was only a dream, something she just needed to wake up from, but it was not enough to break the illusion her own mind had created. It had trapped Nia deep inside, like she was beneath the dirt. She longed for an escape but none seemed to come.

This dream began nearly the moment she had fallen asleep and continued for the next several hours. The worst part was, the dream seemed to progress in real time. So while Nia had been laying there for over five hours, her mind felt every passing minute of it; trapped beneath the earth.

Dirt. Nothing but the cold ground, wrapping itself around it. It was all it could see, all it could feel. Its weight was nearly unbearable, like it was suffocating that which didn't breathe. It sought release, once it was made aware. But it couldn't move.

But then there was a dream. In the middle of all the blank reverie, a better story than its own burial. It was a story of a dreamer who saw a massive relic in a forest, a massive creation of a civilization long gone.

It was a story of an awakening.

In the forest, there stirred a construct of stone, shaking the very forest floor loose. A faint blue glow shone from eyes long covered in dust and dirt. The ground rumbled as arms weighed down by time began to rise. More rumbling and fissuring of the ground occurred, and the great golem stood once more, all its massive size and mass beginning to move with purpose.

It headed straight to the institution at the very core of the island, though it had no knowledge of what the institution itself was. All it knew was that there lay its purpose, or what would give it purpose next.

It waded through the woods with ease, and then to the borders of the institution. A few guards struck it, but it paid no heed, and soon it was left alone but under surveillance when it became clear that it had not yet any intent to harm.

The person it sought out was closer than ever, now only a few steps away. It towered over the window, and so it knelt down, its massive glowing eye occupying almost half the window it peered through. A guttural voice issued forth from the unmoving mouth on its stone head.

"There has been
An awakening -
A reawakening.
You -
Ashaya has heard thy call
And answered.

Why have you,
Or how have you
With but a dream
Dredged up the past
Long buried,
Long forgotten?
"

Mia's body continued to tremble, her mind still stuck under ground, feeling the earth consume her. She just wanted to awake from the nightmare but it continued for so long that she slowly began to wonder if it was even a dream anymore or simply her new reality.

That was until a voice came to her ears. She was still dreaming at first, hearing the words slip into her mind and wind their way down through the dirt till they hit her ears.

The words, almost like magic, slowly began to pull Nia out of the nightmare. By the time the name Ashaya was said, her eyes were slowly fluttering open. Her body still felt trapped though, unable to move. Nia's eyes flickered around the room trying to find the source of the voice but since the window was behind her, she could not find it. Her body began to come back under her own control though and she found herself able to push up until she was sitting. Then she noticed it; a faint blue glow coming from her window.

She turned to see the eye peering at her just as the creature spoke it's last words. Nia jumped, her body moving quickly onto it's feet. She ran to her closet and hid behind the door. She peered out from behind it, her body shaking.

"Who... Who are you?" Nia couldn't see the whole figure so she wasn't able yet to recognize the creature from her vision.

"Ashaya is Ashaya.

The history of a different time
Buried,
But reawakened.

You have called
And history has answered."

Ashaya stood straight, and its full bulk began to glow in the moonlight. It stepped back, each footfall heavy. In the moonlight, it looked simply resplendent, though it was but a glimmer of its ancient glory. Back in its day, there was greatness - and it had yet to recognize any of it in the current environment.

The great head of stone turned, casting its light upon the walls of the academy. Untold ages had passed since Ashaya last saw civilization, or light. It stared up into the skies, which at the very least seemed to have kept their luster.

A few birds perched on it when it ceased to move in its observation, and then a few more, until it seemed as if it were there, a part of the environment, for as long as it existed. Even as it continued to glow, and even as it moved its massive hewn jaw to speak, the birds remained perched upon it.
"Who are you
That summoned Ashaya?"

As the creature stepped back from the window and spoke again, Nia felt the realization set in. Despite the size of the being, she felt her fear slipping away slowly. She could tell that it meant no harm and it seemed to be responding to her. She had never had a vision respond to her before. Normally these things were kind of a way one street.

She moved out from behind her closet door and closer to the window. It was cracked a bit and the curtains drawn back. She stood for a moment, examining the creature before her. She could now recognize the face, and even the feeling, from her vision fully.

"I.. I'm Nia."

It seemed like a rather unsatisfactory introduction after the creature before her had just called itself history answering her call. She wasn't even aware she had called...

Ashaya's great arms moved fluidly, slowly, and gently through the air, as if it were trying to grasp the air itself. It brought down its hands, and then stretched them up to the sky in what appeared to be prayer.

"How long has Ashaya
Slept, unaware
In a faraway land?

Ashaya remembers clearly
Its past;
Erased by the fire of the earth.

Ashaya was born
Of earth;
Swallowed by the earth;
And still it walks the earth."

Though it would be a little difficult to tell from Ashaya's rather flat manner of speech, there was a hint of mourning in its words. However, it was not made to grieve, but to learn and to live. Its creators meant for Ashaya to live and grow with them, and in the worst case, outlast them. Clearly, the latter case applied.

The golem moved its head down from its pose, the glow of its eyes covering the window and Nia. It stepped backward and reached out with a hand, cupping it against the sill as if inviting her to climb up.

"Child,
Ashaya is grateful for your summons,
As are the ghosts -
All four hundred thousand
And seventy-eight of them;
Each engraved upon Ashaya's stone.

Their wisdom,
Their knowledge -
Everything Ashaya's people
Learned or discovered -
Have returned to the world.

But for what reason?"

Nia watched Ashaya intently. Despite its large size and her timid nature, she did not feel afraid of the large stone creature before her. She pushed the window open further and placed her hands against the sill to lean out a bit.

"I don't know how long you were buried underground. A very long time I am sure. It's currently the month of December in the year 2015 if that helps."

As it placed its hand below the window, Nia carefully climbed out the window and into its palm. Her small, skin and bones figure looking like a doll in the stone gains hand. She placed her hand against his, feeling the cool of its surface. It felt like earth but also more alive. She couldn't explain it.

"I... I don't know why you are here now. I saw you in a vision. Buried in the ground. And then something waking you up. Normally my visions don't come into fruition so quickly. But its barely been hours since then and now..here you are." Her small voice spewed out the words, feeling almost as if she owed some explanation to Ashaya for why it was here. Not that she really had one. Or one that even made sense to her. Maybe it would make sense to it though.

"Centuries then,
Have passed,
Unmarked and unremembered."

Great masses of stone moved up, bringing Nia closer to the golem's eyes. They closed, and when they opened again the light was gone, exposing the obsidian that they were hewn from. In the absence of the light, a different glow sprung forth, this time from massive lines of runes covering its body.

The head drew closer, nonexistent lips curving into a smile. Memories of the past came back to Ashaya's thoughts. There had been a very similar scene in the past, untold years ago, of it holding someone close to its eyes. Except that while that vivid scene in the past was filled with certainty, now there was but doubt. In Nia's words, and in Ashaya's purpose.
"Long ago,
Ashaya's creators dabbled
In the workings of
The soul -
Eternal,
Natural,
And ethereal.

Much was achieved,
Much was learned,
Much was lost.

One among them held
Great similarity
To you.

He was chief amongst
The animancers,
Renowned, but now
Forgotten.

Will you achieve
The same heights,
I wonder?"

Centuries... That was a long time to be underground. The thought made Nia shiver a bit as she remembered her nightmare that had placed her under the ground. Though it seemed this being had not been conscious of the time that it had past while it was buried.

Nia couldn't help but tremble, her anxiety and fear kicking in as the creature drew her closer to its face. But it wasn't fear of Ashaya, no she felt he meant no harm and she was safe with it. However, the situation, the words, and everything else about this moment made her anxious and unsure. But then again, that was also how she felt about going to the cafeteria.

"Me? Achieve the same as your chief?" Now that was the craziest thing she had heard all evening. "I don't even know who I am..."

How could someone possibly ascend to greatness if they weren't even sure where they came from or who they really were.

Suddenly a thought flashed through Nia's head and she perked up a bit, her eyes searching Ashaya's, "How.. How am I similar?" Maybe there was some answer there.

Ashaya lowered its hands and its legs, kneeling on the floor. Gently, it cupped its hands and placed Nia on the soft earth, and lowered itself a little to sit. Now that it had settled, the birds had returned, clawing at the runes and pecking around in the leftover dirt that was still on it, seeing if there was food.

"Visions.
Both of you
See,
And saw,
More with your eyes
Than eyes should see."

Massive fingers moved and raked through a tiny clearing, smearing dirt on themselves. Ashaya drew a line with the dirt on its face, forming a dirty but warm smile. It had been awakened by this child, and it felt both a certain measure of gratitude, as well as a sense of attachment. There were many similarities between her and the past, but not enough for its memories to muddle.

It reached down with a finger and said, as reassuringly as its flat voice could,
"Ashaya has yet to learn the ways
Of this world;
But Ashaya knows many things.

It knows the confusion of
The lost,
And the inevitability
Of finding.

You will find yourself.

Ashaya knows this.

It knows
The warp and weave,
The ebb and flow,
Of the world.

What Ashaya knows
Is yours to know.

Ask,
And you shall be answered."

There its finger stayed, hovering in front of the girl, a large rune from an ancient scrip engraved at the tip, glowing lightly with power and humming with promise. It was there - raw wisdom, raw insight, simply waiting to be grasped.
