Shadow nodded, taking in the information and taking note of it. Really, she was making leaving his room sound very much like a bad idea. If a demon and that monster were only the beginning Shadow wasn’t sure how he would handle what else would come. Would he ever get used to this place? At least, he supposed, with all sorts of scary things around he was safe from anyone who was after him. Everyone he met told him he would get used to it. He wasn’t so sure. He hadn’t even learned about the real world yet and now his worldview was being torn apart. He couldn’t deny that what he was seeing in Chloe was very real. And the monster… no not a monster… the musical Ozzy was real to.
Shadow ducked his head and for a moment turned to the rhino man and realized that he owed an apology to him as well. “I’m sorry I attacked you,” he said, partially hoping that that would keep him from plotting a revenge against him. Honestly, if Ozzy had come any closer than he was now, he probably would have gotten shadows in the face again. Shade wasn’t entirely convinced that he wasn’t going to be attacked by either of them. But… Chloe had been fast enough to catch him and she hadn’t yet tried to eat him. He was overwhelmed by everything in this place and it made him just want to go back to his room and never leave.
Not a demon. Shadow had to admit he breathed a sigh of relief then. He didn’t know what being a demon meant but he knew that in the world he had come from they were bad. It did make him feel better. Being a human was what he knew how to be. He didn’t know how to be anything else.
Shadow felt exhausted, not by the late hour but by the amount he had learned in the past few minutes and days. It meant that all the good and bad things were real. He felt like he had been stabbed in the heart, just like when he’d learned Kaz was a faerie. Maybe he should have believed him. It lead him bad to the same question. If all of these things were real, angels were real, why had he been left to suffer? Why had no one come for him? He must be some sort of monster then. But, he supposed that if he were a monster it may have come out while he was at that place. He wasn’t sure if that made him feel better or worse.
He covered his face with his hands, to hide the brief break in his mask as he struggled to understand his suffering. This place had pushed him past the breaking point, past the point where even his robust walls could hold his emotions in check. Why did no one care? Why did his parents abandon him? Why didn’t anyone help him? He closed his eyes against the pressure forming behind them, threatening to pour out of him. Without thinking about it, the shadows covered him completely in a small bubble. Safe in the darkness the tears slipped through his tightly closed eyes, like a slow leak at a dam very near breaking.
