Shadow wasn’t adjusting well. He almost wished someone would tell him what to do, he couldn’t take care of himself, he didn’t know how. Without guidance, he had stuck mostly to his room. Apparently, there was supposed to be a tutor coming but they had asked him to attend a class. He hadn’t. The idea that all of the people in that class would know what was going on and he didn’t was too much of a burden on his already fragile mind. So, naturally Shadow hadn’t gone. He was afraid they would punish him for it, so he stayed in his room and was for a while too afraid to leave. It was a few nights ago when someone slipped the mail under his door that he got several things of interest.

Firstly, a letter from the Mersing’s, they wrote a lot of letters and they were all beautiful, but Shade hadn’t had to read English in a long time and had forgotten a lot. So he bumbled through their nice words and felt a stab of jealousy for whoever this Daniel was that they thought was him. Poor Daniel, he thought, his parents thought they’d found him. This was the first letter they’d left that seemed to mark a change in their hopefulness. They were sorry, they said, that they’d scared him. They were going to give him some space and be back in a month. As terrible as it may seem, this gave Shadow a breath of relief. Secondly, there was a notice from a person on Manta Carlos who wanted to talk to him. He immediately threw that letter away when it became clear that they were fascinated by his state. His strange, freakish state. He wrinkled his nose and tossed it.

Thirdly, and perhaps scariest of all was a request from the school. They made no mention of his missed classes, he supposed, in many ways it didn’t quite matter. He was just going to be behind his whole life, maybe that was just his lot. No this one was different. Another test. Shade sighed and wondered what he would have to do to get these people to leave him alone. They wanted a baseline for his power. Thrust immediately back to the tests and experiments he balked at the notice and tossed that as well. He fell back on his bed, everything here was so confusing, so different, so new. It was too much, things used to be so easy, terrible, but easy. People told him what to do and walked him through things, he did nothing that was not directly ordered and did everything that he was told. These people with their polite letters left an opening to run and Shadow took it every time.

Shadow peered out the window to see that darkness had fallen. Outside. He’d never been allowed outside before, but here… He pulled on his hoodie and pulled his beanie over his ears. All black and ready to hide in plain sight from the world. He drifted down the familiar corridors silently, a moving shadow. He emerged into the dark night, the washed out colors and lack of light soothing to his eyes, which glowed as they surveyed the world. He took a deep breath… outside. The air was so fresh and the wind soft on his face. Shade glanced over his shoulder half convinced someone would stop him, but he set out to explore a bit. He stopped at a tree and looked up in wonder. Who knew trees could grow so large? Oh he missed the outside. The warm, grassy places. Shadow moved on, moving like a wraith in the darkness, only barely perceptible in the night.

It had been another late night at the library.

Chloe didn't have as many of these as she used to, back when it was life-or-death. Back when she needed to learn how to expel her father from her life - huddled over books in the dark magic section, scrawling notes that she would keep in a locked cabinet in her room. She wondered how much of that Arach had seen. She still sometimes checked the walls and ceilings for spiders.

Tonight, it was just an essay and some practice problems she wouldn't have time for later in the week. The night was still young when she came out - but it was certainly dark. She considered summoning Ozerchabal to walk with her on the way to the teleporter, but decided against it. The campus was safe enough. It might as well have been broad daylight with all of the nocturnal students messing around between classes.

She took a shortcut through the trees on her way to the bus stop. She didn't think there was anyone watching her.

It was so peaceful here. And warm! Shadow couldn’t remember the last time he’d been outside when it had been this pleasant. He breathed the clean air and marveled at how fresh it even tasted. The night was beautiful, he remembered how frightened he’d been when the shadows first came to him, but now he couldn’t imagine a life without them. They were his protectors, his friends, his lifeline. Also it was quiet here. He was only beginning to realize that he was not the only person here with strange powers, there were many, many people here with strange powers. Almost all of them in fact, he had been told.

He hated to think it, but he couldn’t help it. He had to be a liability to this place. Someone out there was likely looking for him and very angry at not being able to find him. Shadow had no idea how safe this place was, only that he would do everything in his power to not go back. He shivered despite the warmth and looked up at the stars. With a sad sigh he realized he missed the solitude and quiet as he watched the stars from the boat. Maybe that was the life he was meant to lead, alone on the ocean, with nothing but him and the darkness. That sounded like a nice life, alone and calm. None of the strangeness here or the new things and none of the lights! Shadow was always wary of people, but just for a moment he allowed himself to fantasize about his future in the darkness. Mistake…

Person! Shadow was so alarmed by her sudden appearance that he leapt backward to avoid her and ended up falling over a tree branch. He landed with a cry that came from fear and the sudden pain that came from the fall. Abruptly the shadows surrounded and covered him like a shroud, allowing him to blend into the tree’s shadow. He looked up at the person he’d almost run into and realized suddenly that she wasn’t a human. He held his breath, watching her from the shadows and hoping she hadn’t seen him and would just go away.

What was that?

Chloe swiveled around, only barely catching a glimpse of - was that a person? - before the shadows swallowed him up. Her eyes were locked on the spot where he had disappeared. Her mind went immediately to the worst case scenario. If this was something innocent, someone who had every reason to mess around in the trees here, he wouldn't have disappeared like that. He might mean Chloe harm. She needed backup.

Chloe muttered a quick incantation, raising her voice when she finished it with the word "Ozerchabal." One of her tattoed arms crackled with energy along its lines of ink, and with a deep WHOOSH a large man with a rhinoceros-like head appeared at her side out of thin air. He had on a "NOIDED" t-shirt, and his clawed hands held what looked like a golden vuvuzela.

"I think someone was following me," Chloe told him. "Or... spying on me. Or something."

Ozzy sincerely doubted this, but he didn't say so. This wouldn't be the first time he had been called over for nothing, and it probably wouldn't be the last. He was really here to make Chloe feel better. Scanning the area around him, he nodded and grunted his acknowledgement.

"I saw him for a second over there," Chloe continued, pointing directly at Shadow's hiding spot. Ozzy would dutifully walk over to check that spot.

Shadow stayed completely still, frozen in fear as she stared him down. He knew the shadows covered him, but he was too afraid that maybe it hadn’t worked this time. Best not move and hope she gave up. His heart hammered and he couldn’t quite process what his eyes were telling him. Horns and a tail and he didn’t even understand what was happening with her feet. There was a nagging in the back of his mind that kept saying ‘demon’ but there was a much louder voice telling him that he wasn’t actually seeing what he was seeing. There was no such things as demons. He knew that. The only demons out there were other people. People were scarier than any story told to children. Yet, despite that, he blinked and she didn’t disappear.

He didn’t understand what was happening all he knew was that there was a loud noise and a new monster had been summoned out of nowhere. Shadow bit his tongue and tasted blood as he tried not to scream in fear. The roaring in his ears from his own pulse blocked out everything she said following that. The only thing Shadow was immediately aware of was that this… thing was walking toward him. She pointed right at him and Shade woke up. “No!” Shadow cried and flung his hands out to ward the monster off. At once the shadows leapt to his defense. They rose up and solidified into a column of darkness and thrust forward at his aggressor with enough force to knock it off it’s feet.

Shadow opened his eyes and felt the strength go out of him just as rapidly as it had come. He was exposed. He scrambled away, staggering with difficulty to his feet. As soon as he got his feet under him he ran for it. The world around him was as easy to see as if the sun was high in the sky, even better in fact. What the hell was that?! Demons weren’t real. Were they? Shadow gritted his teeth, he hated this place. Why couldn’t things just go back to normal? Before any of this happened? Fear of pursuit made him risk a glance behind him. He had a feeling his attack would not be received with understanding, not like Kaz, who continued to surprise him with his ability to stay calm. He hadn’t meant to do it, it had just happened!

Ozerchabal didn't see it coming - he barely had time to process someone was there before landing right on his ass. But Chloe was ready - she pursued shadow when he ran away. She was much faster than a human, and she caught up with him fairly quickly.

She almost felt vindicated. Ozzy probably didn't believe her that there were spies. Nobody else did, either, but she knew it. She knew it the whole time.

"Why were you spying on me?" Chloe asked him. She was keeping up easily, not even having trouble breathing; she was speaking like she would if she was sitting down. "Did my father put you up to this? I won't hurt you if you just stop and talk to me." And it was true. Getting into a fight on campus, or killing someone, would put her in a lot of trouble. She'd rather find a way to handle this without violence - and this person clearly seemed scared of her and Ozzy. They didn't want to fight either, she was sure.

Shadow’s eyes widened when he realized how much distance she had covered in so little time, she was practically on top of him. Leave me alone! he wanted to scream. But Shadow’s throat closed with fear and silence had always been his best weapon. Shadow’s lungs burned and even his adrenaline fueled limbs couldn’t keep him going. He slowed and backed away from her, one hand warding her off while the other felt behind him to make sure he didn’t trap himself on accident. His eyes reflected the minimal light available, giving them a very inhuman appearance. The expression behind those eyes was defensively blank. What did she want from him? A demon… what did demons want? Souls? His feet finally stopped but he didn’t lower his arm, although he figured it probably wouldn’t save him.

Had not enough been taken from him? She kept speaking but he couldn’t make sense of any of it. What did her father have to do with this? Was it not allowed to be walking around at night. Well, after tonight, Shade didn’t think that would be a problem. Outside… outside was dangerous. He’d been a fool, there was only one safe place and that was in his room, preferably in a dark closet. Maybe, he thought, If I hide long enough they’ll forget about me. Shadow kept backing away from her, trying to figure out his next escape option. Unlike her, he was nearly gasping for air as he retreated. Shadow couldn’t catch his breath, not only from the run, but from the terror of whatever unknown punishment he had incurred by coming outside.

Shadow looked straight ahead. Taking on a distant expression, Shadow sank deep within his mind. Only his panting gave any indication that he was actually alive inside this body. Shade waited with a sinking heart for whatever was coming to him. He’d broke a rule, coming outside like this. Wait… I’m not… I didn’t break the rule… they said I could go out… He blinked numbly regarding the girl with squinted eyes. This… This wasn’t there… why was she stopping him? “Wh—what do you want?” he asked. He meant for it to sound strong and confident but his voice was shaking too hard and it came out barely above a whisper. The shadows wrapped themselves around his arms. No. He would never be defenseless again.

Chloe was starting to realize she might have misread this situation. She stopped and held her hands up at shoulder-height, open palmed, trying to seem nonthreatening. "It kind of looked like you were stalking me or something. I got scared, and that's why I called my bigger friend back there to protect me. I was going to ask you why you were doing that."

It was also occurring to her that if her father sent him, he wouldn't be able to hurt her. But if this was something else, he could. She had made the first realization before she decided to chase him - the counterpoint came a little bit more slowly. She only fully grasped it now that she had him scared and cornered, yet clearly capable of defending himself.

Chasing this kid down might have been a stupid idea.

He’d never go outside again, lesson learned. Shadow learned to stay alive by learning quickly and he didn’t want to risk meeting another demon in the darkness… if he survived this one… His expression remained neutral as he prepared himself for what was to come. The shadows swirled in front of his outstretched hand, building a shield of pure darkness. It devoured whatever light hit it, cold enough that ice began to rime it’s surface, giving it a strange glassy appearance.

Shadow glanced at her hands and narrowed his eyes at her. He didn’t buy her defenseless gesture, he’d seen her conjure that monster out of nothing. The darkness was his power, he was stronger here. The darkness swarmed him and he could feel its cool power, unemotional and sturdy. He leaned on it, gathering it around him. His thoughts were more on shields at the moment than weapons. Running was always the safest option. Shade’s head cocked in confusion, he had just been out for a walk. She’s startled him… but she was afraid? Of him? Shadow didn’t lower his hand and took another step back, shaking his head, he didn’t mean to… He glanced back in the direction of the monster, was she going to retaliate?

“I didn’t mean to, I’m sorry!” Shadow stuttered quickly, failing to understand her explanation. Her attempts to appear nonthreatening were failing and Shadow felt trapped. If he ran, she could catch him, if he called the shadows to disappear she’s sick her monster on him again. He cowered away from her. No escape. Oh god. The darkness thickened around him and his panting turned to sharp ragged breaths that quickened. Fear gripped his heart and darkened every reasonable thought in his mind, speeding them up until he could no more have moved than spoken. His pleasant night was shattered, all he wanted to do was hide. No place was safe.

The kid was distressed, and some kind of dark magical stuff was swirling around him. Yes, this was probably a stupid idea. But she couldn't get the thought out of her head that this had something to do with Mikhainon. Something about this situation didn't add up in her mind.

She backed up a little bit. "OK, I believe you. I'm sorry I scared you, too." She sat down across from him. "Let's... try this again. I'm Chloe. Nice to meet you. What were you doing up in the trees like that?" It probably would have been a better idea to just apologize and head home if this was just some kid - but she wasn't sold on him just being some kid. She wanted to get to the bottom of this, and she wouldn't be able to if she just ran off.
