The Apothecary

Owner: Thomas Pulfer, MD.
Location: Downtown
Hours: Tue-Sun, 11am – 9 pm

A new sign has been hung on the door: 'NOW HIRING, Inquire Within'

Store Policies:
  • Purchase of stronger medications or remedies require a medical consultant from Dr. Pulfer, or a note from a doctor. While, Thomas emphasizes that these are to be treated with the respect of any other medication one would get from a pharmacy.
  • For purchase of dangerous magical plants and herbs a valid ID must be presented and the patron must be over 18 years of age.
  • No pets
  • No returns (he’s been burned too many times by people who return well and claim the remedy didn’t help)

Appearance:
The storefront is a warm red brick, two stories, the bottom of which houses the shop, the upper story is a two bedroom apartment occupied by Thomas. The door and windows of the ground level are sheltered by dense black awnings, while the upper floors windows are tightly shuttered against the light. A pleasant wore ‘Welcome’ mat sits outside the glass door, with a ‘Come in, we’re OPEN’/’Sorry we’re CLOSED’ flappable sign in the window next to the door. A black curtain tightly defends the interior from sunlight and gives a nice backdrop for ‘The Apothecary’ engraved in the door. Hanging from the awning over the door is the sign which reads ‘The Apothecary’ on a warm brown wood, painted black and decorated with silhouetted vines.

Step inside The Apothecary, triggering a bell, and wait a moment for your eyes to adjust to the dim lighting. The room is long and narrow, as eyes adjust to the soft yellow light of old fashion lamps hung on the wall, illuminating the sunless room. There is a pleasant mixture of scents from floral to herb. Along the walls are small signs that identify the different plants and herbs. There are spices for cooking, loose teas for seeping. There are vials of liquid that give relief to a wide array of ailments including nausea, headache, sore throat, to stronger painkillers, sleep aids, and salves for cuts and burns.

Move about halfway down the length of the building and you’ll find a counter that stretches from wall to wall along the short edge, with a flip-able pass through, there are wide counters on the side walls giving plenty of work space. A cash register sits on the counter, along with a small bell, a vial of pens and a stack of papers with obscure notes on them. There you will find Dr. Pulfer, sitting on his stool, working. Behind the counter you’ll see a thick velvet forest green curtain, if you are a magic user, Tommy will push aside the curtain and reveal plants and mixtures specific for magic spells and potions.

There is a door in the middle of the back wall which leads to another small workroom. That is where the more complicated and dangerous mixtures are made, herbs are dried and plants that don’t enjoy the sun are housed. Through this room, is another to the backyard of the small shop. It backs up to a pleasant park, which has the benefit of not being shadowed by buildings. There is a small greenhouse nursery and rows upon rows of home grown herbs and flowers. There are planters that line the fences and the rows take up all but a tiny walkway. It isn’t often that Tommy allows people back into his garden, he’s very protective of it.

Against the back of the shop there is a set of narrow wooden stairs that lead to Tommy’s apartment.
