The VR simulation had left Robert Carnegie feeling lethargic. He'd been in his fair share of virtual realities, sure, though none of them quite like this one, where he had no memory of his entire life before that or any of the lessons he'd learned. Once upon a time he was a smiling doctor too, though he couldn't say he'd been one in a chaotic family he didn't fit in a city of heroes and villains alike.

The odd feeling he woke up with lingered with him and still hadn't gone away even as he tugged on Tam's hand and led them down dark streets and paths lit only by streetlights. At least the cool breeze against him was managing to calm down that deep and uncomfortable warmth that stuck to him the moment he'd stepped foot in that building.

"I don't think I believe you when you say it's fine," Robert said with that resonating voice he'd grown deaf to over the centuries. His dark eyes scanned the trees and park paths until he spotted a playground. His tugging became a little more insistent in its direction. The taste of the lust demon's emotions in that moment was tantalizing, though it wasn't one of his favorites.

He glanced back at Tam, setting aside that odd lethargic feeling. "Did something happen in the VR?"

Tam was unresisting as Robert tugged at their hand, leading them into the cool night air, content to be fed on and follow the vampire's lead. It wasn't like they had anything better to do, and they were curious why Robert wanted to find a swingset, something the demon was only vaguely familiar with and had never been on.

As things went, having their emotions eaten, and so gently, was more pleasant than most things that could be done to them, and Tam was as happy as they were capable of being. This was rapidly becoming another addiction for them. A fact Tam wasn't quite sure the man was aware of, seeing as he still insisted on asking for permission, as if the demon would resist even if they could. They weren't content, still a void of emptiness and a creature of desire, but this took the edge off at least.

Of course they wanted more, always craving, but they took what affection they could get. It was a rare thing. They were so used to being used, trading themselves for anything. Not for the first time they wondered why Robert was different.

And that was the problem they were having. Things were fine, things were just what they were used to. But in spite of the entertainment they'd gotten from the VR, the alternate universe hadn't been much of a change. They'd never had words for what troubled them - the emptiness they tried to fill. They wanted everything, so what difference did addiction make? And even a game kept them that way, though as Tweak it had been a physical pain the drugs kept away. People had looked down on that, and Tam still wasn't sure why. But mostly they were disappointed.

They turned to look at Robert when he spoke, clinging to his hand like a life line, their voice in response somewhat hesitant as they considered their words. For some reason they really wanted to be understood. "I... yes ... a lot of things happened in the VR. But they are not so important. I had fun there..." They trailed off for a moment, their mind trying to order their own disorganized thoughts. "There I wanted to be heard, but no one listened to the rat. I was just... pretty until the end. Here... I am still what people want and it doesn't..." Again they paused. Conversation was so new, they were much more used to just acting. "What I wanted never really mattered before, except how much I would trade to acquire it." They were frowning slightly now - this was a fact that had never much bothered them - why not be used if it felt good? But this time on Earth was different than it had been - they weren't distracted enough and kept having the opportunity to think about things.

Robert Carnegie hadn't always been as careful as he was just then. Once upon a time in his teenage and young adult years, he took what he wanted too, and he didn't give much of a darn what the other people involved thought. It dawned on him soon enough that it just wasn't the way he wanted to live and to interact with others; his heart was a lot gentler than that, as much as it hurt his 'masculinity' to admit, and those other people deserved respect.

How much different was he in that simulation? He still took the gentle, levelheaded approach--when he found himself among other players, that was. Most of his time had been spent caring for the NPCs who came through his clinic, and it still mystified him when he thought about his first encounter with player characters. That was the sort of unhinged violence he'd spent too long around in his real life, and while he hadn't known of his player's history, his character didn't want to be around it either.

So he gave Tam's hand a light squeeze and stepped onto the soft grass around the playground. He tilted his head as his friend spoke, his eyes meanwhile searching the playsets and monkey bars.

"I wasn't around the other player characters very long, so while I want to say I thought people listened to your character in the one time we were around each other, I just don't know what you went through. In life, it's difficult to be heard unless you're 'worth something' to the other person, or they can gain something from you--a lot of the time. Not always, but perhaps it was the same in the VR."

Robert spotted a swingset and excitedly pulled Tam over to it. He took a seat and motioned for Tam to do the same on the swing next to his, keeping a gentle but firm grip on their hand as he fed. His skin didn't look as pale as it had in the simulation room thanks to their emotions, though it was hard to tell in the low-light conditions of the night. "What you wanted didn't matter before...Was it different in the simulation?"

Tam had always preferred affection to sex, whatever people thought when it was learned they were a lust demon, or what people wanted under the effects of their attraction aura. For them, just holding Robert's hand was nice. Maybe they wished they could sit closer on the swings, but it was a cuddly innocent desire. Still enough to be distracting.

Everything about the playground grabbed their attention, their eyes darting around, looking at each strange piece of equipment. They wanted to ask what this place was, but decided they could ask later, refocusing on the vampire.

"I don't want to be heard here... Or I didn't..." They were still frowning, riddled with confusion Robert could probably taste, not used to contemplating their own emotions. They wanted everything, to experience, to feel good. They always just went for it without a thought. Now here on earth, without the drugs dulling their brain, life was so much more complex than they'd made it.

"I'm only worth as much as people want. I get by, making trades." They still didn't see a problem with that, it was a neutral statement. The demon was meant to be used, geared toward it. And seeing as they couldn't resist if they wanted to, it was probably easier on themself to not be bothered by it.

"The simulation... no. It wasn't different. That's..." They frowned. Things were so much harder here. A part of them wished Robert would just feed on them and be done with it. They couldn't understand him. "Why? Why are you so... Why do you talk to me?" The other part wanted the friendship, even though it was a new concept that brought up enough mixed emotions to leave them reeling.
