Havoc split his time between eating alone and eating with someone. Generally speaking, that someone was Seiken and absolutely no one else. Havoc didn't have a great number of friends--really, he'd count himself as having two, although he'd yet to confirm the second one by explicitly asking--and he didn't think it was a particular issue to have to eat alone.
If anything, it was sort of relaxing. He'd gotten used to eating absolutely surrounded by people, and being able to just settle in and eat for the sake of eating was a delight.
Well, a delight on Havoc's emotional scale, which would barely have registered to anyone else as slightly pleasant.
Havoc had collected his lunch and settled in to eat at one of the long tables, but his mind was elsewhere. He had posters that he'd brushed up on. His speech had gone well. He'd even gotten--more or less--a new adviser.
The campaign was going well, Havoc decided, which meant he had earned a day off.

"Heeeyyyyy," Cabel said.
He found his target well enough and, luckily, he was alone. Cabel was dressed in his normal wear--which was to say obnoxious and flashy. His too-tight jeans complimented an obnoxiously printed shirt, which was superciliously Lisa Frank style with fluffy white kittens. He was wearing a pair of aviator sunglasses even though he was in doors.
"It's for horses," he confirmed and pulled up the chair across from his target. Cabel could check off the things he knew about this man on one hand: they were probably the same age, presumably male, and both super interested in being on student council.
Cabel was not prepared to be on student council. He was busy preparing his latest batch of product he had mentally labeled oh-god-tuition-is-expensive. Cabel was very, very good at what he did.
"You're James, right?" Cabel said. He set an outrageous coffee and a bento box lunch featuring a salad with rice and chicken shaped like bunny rabbits out before him. "My name is Cabel and I think we need to talk."

Havoc wasn't sure what to make of the man who approached his table. Havoc had absolutely no fashion sense, but even he couldn't help but notice that the man was wearing something... interesting. The jeans were normal enough, but the shirt... the shirt was something else. Havoc squinted at it, his attention torn. Was it polite to comment? Did he know he was wearing something that most people would assume was ridiculous?
"What is for horses?" Havoc asked, completely missing the joke as it wooshed right over his head. He didn't get the guy, and he didn't get his statements, but Havoc at least had the foresight to recognize that he was probably being approached about the elections. He smiled one of his slightly-too-stiff smiles as he looked up, his eyes sweeping over Cabel as he did.
"I go by Havoc, but yes," Havoc said, well aware that his name was, by most definitions of the word, ridiculous. "Is this about the elections?"

"Hey," Cabel says. "That's what's for horses."
he jabbed a fork into his salad and chewed on it. When he swallowed, he frowned and said, "And also salads, now matter how cute they are."
This guy had a smile like a newsreporter, thought Cabel. That was interesting to him.
"Damn straight I'm here to talk about the elections," Cabel said. "Could you imagine another reason I'd come over and sit down with a stranger?"
He grinned. Cabel could think of at least seven.
"Rumor has it you and Emily are both vying for the first place," Cabel said. He leaned towards him, dropping his voice as if he was making a conspiratorial secret. He kept Havok's eyes the entire time. One of his hands moved. "So that makes you interesting to me."
Cabel leaned back and said, "How'd you get the name Havok?"

Oh. It was a pun, but Havoc didn't really find it was funny. It wasn't a jab at Cabel's humor, but it was a jab at Havoc's lack there of. He simply didn't find much funny, and his expression remained the same generic smile that could have gone on a poster somewhere. Ever so slightly artificial, and lacking a real response.
"I can think of a variety of reasons, yes," Havoc pointed out. "Randomly approaching people seems to be fairly common at the school, I assume because it is so filled with misfits."
It wasn't an insult. It was simply a statement of fact. Starlight Academy was weird, and it was filled with all sorts of strange people. He'd already met one woman who probably would have been committed anywhere else in the world, since she'd spent the whole time talking about being able to see the origin of the universe and babbling about things that made absolutely no sense.
"I wouldn't know," Havoc pointed out. He had no idea what the rumors were. He had no idea who was winning, or who was not winning. He supposed he was doing well, and gave a little nod in response. "I'm pleased to hear that though."
He said it, but his expression didn't change from his standard smile.
"Havoc is my surname," he clarified. "Not a nickname, although it became one over time."

"Point taken," Cabel said.
He drummed his fingers across the table and then took another stab at his salad. Cabel ate fast. He talked fast. He couldn't sit still. He was caffeine personified.
"Well, then let me inform you: rumor has it that you and Emily are vying for first place," Cabel said, like now he was filling him in on the rumor that he'd...just filled him in on. 'So I'm pleased to hear it. You're pleased to hear it. Emily is probably not so pleased to hear it."
Cabel yawned and leaned back on his chair, then took a swig of his coffee.
"Oh," Cabel said. "Well, it suits you. It's easier to picture myself calling you that then Jim."
That was as close to a compliment as Cabel would get.
"I want to know what your stance is on the school's rules," he said.

"Emily is likely not pleased to hear it, yes," Havoc confirmed, before realizing that he had no idea how much Cabel knew about her. Did he know what sort of person she was? Had he just said too much?
He'd have to be more careful.
"No one has ever called me Jim," Havoc pointed out. "Sometimes James, but mostly Havoc."
Pretty much always Havoc, if he was being realistic. There'd been another James in boot camp, and it was just too hilarious to the average person to have Havoc--who was about as far from unrestrained chaos as possible--called just that.
"That would depend on the rule," Havoc said, carefully parrying the question to avoid any issues. "Are you friends with Emily?" That was not a safe bet, but he was hoping that the answer was no. Or maybe he was hoping the answer was yes? It was hard to make up his mind. If the answer was no, it would be easier to pass off Havoc's too-quick answer, but if the answer was yes, Cabel might already know what sort of person Emily Strong really was.

“I don’t know what people call you,” Cabel said. “Just that Havok seems to suit you, in my limited perception of you, more than Jim would.”
He shrugged and took a sip of his coffee.
“I’m friends with everyone by default,” Cabel said. “It’s who I’m not friends with that should be worrying. Have you tried the coffee here?”
He wasn’t thrilled that Havoc didn’t answer his question outright, but Cabel let it go. Instead, he asked to clarify, “So you’re flexible on some rules more than othes?”
