Ven sat on the edge of the infirmary bed and tried again to to get the ends of his tie in a loop. Unfortunately, his left hand was wrapped in gauze. Ven passed out earlier in the cafeteria and hit the ground pretty hard. It was his mistake for day dreaming about that burger place on the edge of campus. Ven-the-wolf woke up there and got to eat some burgers handed to him by random passerbys who thought he was a very friendly dog.

Fortunately, Ven-the-human was carried to the infirmary by some well-meaning students. He was lucky he hadn't hit his head, but he hadn't sprained his wrist very badly, and it was wrapped in gauze to account for the burns he got when the coffee fell on it. Now that he was up and awake in his human body, he had no idea how he was going to tie this damn tie. He wasn't very good at it even when he had two working hands.

"Uh, excuse me," Ven said, peaking out into the hallway. "Can anyone give me a hand? It will only take a minute."

Ugh he did not just make that pun.

He had a meeting with someone who would help Ven get his campaign for student council onto bleeder, and he wanted to look....kind of professional.

Ties were professional, right?

Ethel had been the one to bandage the child's hand. She had been quietly working, more or less ignoring him as he seemed to struggle with something internally. When he got up and peeked out into the hallway to call out for help, she finally sighed and stood up.

"Very well. What is it?" Ethel made her best effort not to sound impatient with him, but generally speaking, she didn't give off a warm or friendly vibe in the least.

Ven wasn't sure if he was relieved or worried to get the scary lady in his room.

He felt bad for thinking of her as the scary lady, but he didn't know her name. He sort of thought of her as Sally, only because she reminded him of the character in the Nightmare before Christmas. He'd thought about asking her if she saw the movie, but figured that might be rude.

She was also much taller than him. Ven's height was a sense of frustration, and having to look up to address her made him feel like he was five years old.

Ven held up the tie in his good hand.

"I'm supposed to go to a meeting for the student council election and I uh...can't...tie this with one hand," he confessed. "Is there any chance you'd be able to help me?"

He had a sudden realization that no one told him he could leave. But they couldn't keep him here, right? He was awake and up now.

Ethel eyed the tie, having never actually done one up before. Still, it had to be easier than medicine, science, and all those old dresses she fancies wearing on her time off.

She took it from him, her cold, patched up fingers touching his briefly as she inspected it.

"I will help," she responded coolly without any change in her tone. "I have never does this before, but it should be simple."

She knelt down to slip it around his neck and slowly tie it up. It took more than a few tries, but Ethel maintained her controlled expression throughout the entire process without even a minor change. It was downright unnatural.

"Thank you," Ven said.

He was trying to gauge from her cool tone if he was bothering her, if she was already bothered and he just happened to assume it was him personally that was bothering her, if maybe that was just her voice, or if, maybe, Ven had done something stupid while he was unconscious and his soul was floating around like...

Oh god he didn't fart in front of her, did he?

Super embarrassing.

Her fingers were cool for the brief moment they grazed his. Ven shivered despite himself. Up close, she was still scary, but really not that scary. Somehow, the fact that she was real and not in costume made this easier for Ven to adapt to.

"Thank you again," he said. "I'm really hoping this goes well. I'm super nervous, I've never done something like this, you know?"

He babbled while she worked on his tie.

"Hey do you like working here M'am?" he asked.

Ethel sighed as he continued speaking to her. Her forte had never been friendliness or bedside manner. Now, this boy was asking her opinion of working as a school doctor. She wished he wouldn't speak to her at all; it hurt her concentration.

"Even in failure there is a lesson to be learned," she told him when he told her how nervous he was about running. Ethel wouldn't lie to him, or comfort him.

"I enjoy surgery; it is one of my favorite things. Now, you are all set." She stood up straight and stared at him, the look telling him to leave on this vaguely high note.

She sighed, and Ven re-evaluated his stance on the question of Am I Bothering this Poor Woman? The answer, it seemed, was most definitely yes. Ven again wondered what he'd done to annoy her; he wasn't always aware of what his body did before his soul slipped back into it. He'd never quite gotten the hang of it.

"Thank you," Ven said, both for the advice and for tying his tie. He rubbed his hand along with injured arm and then beamed up at her with a disgustingly optimistic smile. The gratitude in his voice was sincere. "I appreciate your help, m'am, both now and when I was, you know, not here. Thanks a bunch-y!"

He didn't quite skip off. Ven was much to goth for that. But he did leave the infirmary in a significantly better mood than when he arrived. Maybe he could do this after all.
