I really just don't want to be here.

Seventeen? He had been right, his brother was too. He smiled, feeling smart for a few moments. "I've been here for a few days. Not really long at all..." he told her. He wondered if Nicolas had mentioned to her that he was coming, but for some reason, didn't think that he had. "How long have you been here, Mery?" he asked.

Mery had to count back in her mind. It seemed like much longer than it had been. "Um...four months, the fifteenth." She told him. "What are your powers?" She wondered if they were similar to Nikki's or not.

Sabriel blinked. Wow, four months? That was a really long time. He didn't remember how long his brother had been here, but he did know that he had been here for less time than Mery had been. When asked about his powers, he looked around for shadows to demonstrate with, and even though there were shadows, he decided not to actually show her. Telling was enough. "I can teleport through shadows," he told her, leaving out the second part to his power purposely. He didn't use the second part to his power a lot, so he didn't see the use in informing her of it. "What are yours?"

Mery was a little confused. She hadn't heard of teleporting through shadows before. "Oh. I understand." she said, though she really didn't. She'd let him explain if he wanted to. "I can read minds." She said simply.

The boy offered her a small smile. "You don't understand, do you?" he asked quietly. It seemed to him that she didn't, so he decided to explain it to her. "I can basically walk into one shadow, and walk out of another, as long as I know where I'm going and it's in within thirty feet." He finished of with a nod.

When she said she could read minds, he immediately became a little bit paranoid. Even if she and Nikki were in love, it didn't mean that she was Nikki, and he didn't trust her completely yet. What if she decided to try and pry into his mind? What if she found out about what people called his 'problems', or his and Nicolas's past? He didn't know if Nicolas had already told her of the murder of their parents, but seeing as how he hadn't mentioned him once, and the two had never really talked about family, he doubted this had happened.

He let out a shaky breath, his paranoia beginning to take control. He didn't want her to know these things. And what if she told other people, like her friends, and her friends told others, and so on? Oh, then it would be one, big mess! People would eventually find out, he was sure, but the thirteen-year-old didn't want people just telling others.

Sabriel didn't say anything else, trying to calm himself. He didn't have his medication with him, but it wasn't like that would have made a difference; he wouldn't have taken it anyway.

Mery shook her head. "Ohhh. I see now. Thank you." When he fell silent, Mery became alert. Even though she couldn't see, she could sense his tenseness. "Are you alright?" She asked concernedly.

"Are you alright?"

Again with that question! Did he honestly look alright?! It was obvious that he wasn't, and the fact that she just kept asking was beginning to bother him. He rolled his eyes, obviously still not understanding that she was blind. He remained silent, and bit the inside of his lip, sure that he was about to start yelling. To be honest, he didn't care if Nicolas got mad at him for being angry with his girlfriend.

"Do I look alright?" he asked, his voice surprisingly calm, but there was still a hint of anger to it. "You're probably going to read my mind and spill all the information you find to your friends, aren't you?" he asked, unable to help the fact that he was making accusations when he didn't even know her very well. But, that was part of his point; he didn't know her very well, and he didn't know if she was going to do that or not. "And you'll laugh when they all think I'm mentally unstable, won't you? Well guess what, I'm FINE! I'm perfectly fine, and I'm not mentally unstable!!"

Mery snorted, but remained completely calm. "To your first question, I would harldy know whether or not you looked alright. To the first half of your second statement, I wouldn't read your mind. That's an invasion of privacy. I only ever do it if it's necessary. To the second half of your second statement, what friends? Besides Nicolas, of course. I'm not very social, you see. And to your third statement, Why should I laugh? To your fourth, I see no reason at all to believe that you are mentally unstable, except for the fact that you're screaming at me, for no reason." She decided that she sounded a little bit like a shrink, but that was okay. Unless that only made Sabriel angrier.

"To your first question, I would harldy know whether or not you looked alright...."

Sabriel blinked, but then narrowed his eyes. "And why is that, hm?" the boy asked. He still couldn't put the pieces together and figure out that she was blind. Oh, well.

".... I wouldn't read your mind. That's an invasion of privacy. I only ever do it if it's necessary...."

"Yeah, right. You're lying, aren't you? How can I trust what you say?!" he exclaimed. If only he had taken his medication today, or every day, for that matter. Outbursts such as these would be a rarity if he did that, or might not even occur at all. His breathing was still shaking, and he was getting slightly angry because he thought that she kept lying to him.

".... what friends? Besides Nicolas, of course. I'm not very social, you see...."

Lies, it's all lies!! he thought to himself. He didn't like the calm tone to her voice, it made him think of all those psychiatrists that thought he had problems. Oh, dear.... what if she was a psychiatrist?

".... To your fourth, I see no reason at all to believe that you are mentally unstable, except for the fact that you're screaming at me, for no reason."

"I HAVE A REASON!!" Sabriel yelled. "You're lying to me! You keep saying that you won't read my mind, that you won't laugh, that you don't think I'm crazy, but you do!! You're a psychiatrist, aren't you?! How else could you remain so calm?! You're laughing at me on the inside, aren't you?" his voice suddenly got quiet toward the end, and became more fearful than angry. He moved away from her a little bit more, thinking that might actually make a difference.

"And why is that, hm?"

Mery rolled her eyes. "I can't see anything. I can't see what you look like, I can't see where I'm at, I can't see Nikki...Shall I continue with the list of things I can't see? It would take a very long time to list everything in the world." She said as calmly as ever. She was just simply used to being calm about everything.

"Yeah, right. You're lying, aren't you? How can I trust what you say?!"

Mery put her hand on his arm to calm him. "Nicolas trusts me, doesn't he?" She reminded the boy.

You're a psychiatrist, aren't you?! How else could you remain so calm?! You're laughing at me on the inside, aren't you?"
Mery snorted. "Oh gracious, no. I'd make a horrible psychiatrist. Too selfish and too short of an attention span. And I'm not laughing at you. I still see no reason to laugh at you. Please calm down. I'm afraid your making Pooka nervous." Her dog was staring at the boy a little anxiously, and wagging his tail, which Mery could feel.
