Lochlann was pacing.

As far as rooms went, this one was plain and unassuming, but there were details that were setting Lochlann's alarm bells rooming. The walls were plain and off-white, the floor smelled of bleach and lemon scented cleaner, and the lights were housed behind clear panels that prevented him from accessing the bulb.

The room was empty except for a desk, an exam table in the corner, and a folding chair.

The door was locked. He'd tried it, of course.

Lochlann was cagey and irritated. He was shaking, and trying to hide the fact that he was shaking by pacing around the room. He eyed the walls for signs of weakness. He eyed the panels protecting the lights for a sign of weakness.

This reminded him suspiciously so of suicide watch, and Lochlann did not like that. How many times did he have to tell people he didn't want to die before they'd believe him?

He was supposed to meet with someone. This someone, Lochlann hoped, better have an explanation for why he was here and how long it would be before they were going to let him out of here.

Lochlann grounded his teeth and picked at his bare arms.

Plenty of students got along just fine on Juvie island when they realized what kind of situation they were in. They realized that the school was serious, they shaped up, and then they were back on the mainland in no time.

Others decided to be problem children. They acted out. They wouldn't sit down. They wouldn't do as they were told, and generally that meant juvie island had to apply a more hands on approach.

A lot of the time, Hudson was the hands on approach. A big part of it was his look. He looked unassuming. He looked like someone's grumpy old grandfather, old and past his prime. He did not look like the kind of guy who was really a dragon, or the kind of guy who was both extremely strong and extremely experienced. When dealing with non-humans, people almost never expected them to look old, because so many of them would live thousands of years without aging at all.

Hudson did age. And he was far older than the eighty years he looked.

He opened the door without much ceremony, squinting at a manilla file folder he had open in one hand before glancing up at the boy in the room. Trouble. He looked like trouble, and his record said as much. He was also several inches taller than Hudson himself, which Hudson found mildly irritating.

"Lochlann Cabal-Ushtie?" He got the first name without too much trouble, but the last name he mangled the pronunciation on.

Lochlann looked up when he heard his name.

If he wasn't feeling so....whatever this was, he would honestly be impressed that the man managed to make it that far with his last name. He made it sound very American, which is honestly what Lochlann was used to.

He didn't feel comforted, though.

"Yes," Lochlann eyed the man askance. He'd put some distance between the other man once the door was open, but now, Lochlann was making a slow diagonal back towards the door.

He dived at it, suddenly, but the handle didn't move. The door was still locked.

He stood with his back against the doors and again gripped at his own arms.

He swallowed.

"That's...that's me."

Lochlann narrowed his wild eyes. "But who the hell are you?"

The only sign he had acknowledged it at all was a small snort of amusement under his breath. He glanced at the folder again, his eyes raking across the page before he finally snapped it closed, looking up at Lochlann properly.

"Hudson Rogers." Which was a very bland and American name for a man who was neither bland, nor American. "I'll be overseeing your time here at The Islets." The way he said 'The Islets' made it very clear that he thought highly of them - you could practically hear the capitols.

"You have quite a file. I could have spent a few hours reading through it, but I imagine it would be better for me to hear it from you. So, I'll pose the question to you: Why are you here?" And he knew. Of course he would know, because if it wasn't one thing, it was another.

Hudson Rodgers.

Lochlann did not know how to address this man. He didn't seem like a professor, but then again, one of Lochlann's professors was an eight-year-old girl with a stuffed tiger that tried to savage him.

But what the hell was he supposed to call him.

Mr. Rodgers??

Lochlann swallowed. He crossed his arms. It was supposed to be something of a defiant gesture, but really, Lochlann was just trying to protect his stomach and try to stop his hands from shaking. His eyes were glassy and wild.

"I don't know," he said. "You assholes came and grabbed me and now here I am. I don't want to be here. I don't even know where here really is. There's probably been some kind of mistake."

He was eyeing the room, then eyeing Hudson, looking for some way that he could exploit this situation to escape.

He laughed, long and hard, at the very idea that Lochlann Cabyll-Ushtey had no idea why he was there. It was almost enough to bring a tear to his eye, but he was at least professional enough to keep his laugh short.

"This is Juvie Island, as the students call it." Although it's proper name was the Behavioral Corrections Facility, he'd only ever heard it called that once. Even the teachers just called it Juvie Island. "And your record is thicker than my arm." He had only kept the important bits, and it was still a very thick folder. "Would you like to take another guess?"

Lochlann had not yet decided that he hated Hudson, even when he started to laugh. He blew off Juvie island. He blew off the talk of his record. He even blew off the question of guess again.

"Right, well, I didn't realize this was going to be a guessing game," Lochlann said. His arms were still crossed. He was sweating, but he was freezing. Christ, he wished he had his hoodie. They'd put the damn bracelet on his ankle and Lochlann worried at it with the foot on his opposing leg.

"Could it be the pitiful attempt at documentation you people call paperwork? I bet half the stuff in that file is bullshit. Could it be that you grabbed somene with the wrong name? Or, maybe, maybe I'm here because you assholes are just bored," Lochlann said.

he huffed again.

he had to get out.

he wasn't going to make it here.

A snarker. He preferred when they tried to be violent with him, because then he could just be violent back. They weren't a huge fan of him roughing up people who hadn't tried to rough him up first, which made everything a good deal more complicated than it needed to be.

"Yada yada, your file is thicker than my arm. You've pushed the school past it's limits, you've acted up in more ways than most people are aware are possible, and you're not going back to the school until you straighten up and prove you won't disrupt everyone else's classroom experience." A simple enough summary of things. "So calm down, get used to it, and work with us."

If only things were that easy, but people didn't get to the island because they were willing to play along. The 'you need to straighten up your act' didn't really work past the first time, and the first time was always back in the Academy. People didn't get to Juvie Island without having already been warned several times. If none of those warnings worked, why did Juvie Island think this one would?

He suspected they knew it wouldn't, but wanted to cover their bases so no one could say they would have behaved if they had known.

Something he said seemed to stick out in Lochlann's head.

Not going back to the school.

At first, this was almost a welcome relief, because Lochlann hated the school, but he couldn't feel any relief because something like terror was beginning to wash over him. He eyed Hudson with a new interest now, because Lochlann was suspecting he needed this man to get the fuck out of here.

"That's great," Lochlann said. "I won't go back to the school. I'll just go home. No reason for me to be here. If you would be so kind as to unlock the door, I'll go back to my apartment, gather my things, and be gone before daybreak tomorrow."

His hands were shaking too noticeably now, even though he'd tucked them both under his arms to try and stop the movement. It always started in the hands. Lochlann needed to get out of here.

He eyed Hudson very careful, looking for any kind of tell.

"Alas, if only. But education isn't something you can just ignore. Mandatory, and all that. So your options are behaving and returning to Starlight Academy, or spending the rest of your education here, where you'll get an education whether you want to or not." Simple enough.

There wasn't much in the way of tells. Hudson really was relaxed. This was not the first time he'd given someone the equivalent speech, and it wasn't likely to be the last. The fact was, he'd never met a student who could actually physically threaten him with anything worse than a small cut. There was nothing for him to worry about. It was just a job, and one he did extremely well. No need to get personal about it. "So the choice is yours."
