"That's what I figured too, but I've seen people end up in afterlives completely different from what they expected. It's not something I'm particularly worried about," not being able to die did that, " but it's still an interesting thought experiment."

For the moment, his excitement faded. "Soo, yeah, what was life there like? Fólkvangr is where some souls go after death, yes?"

Stefan smiled and nodded to Kon. His genuine curiousity was nice to see after dealing with 'normal' mottals for so long.

"Yea, everyone hears about how you go off to Valhalla to dine and party with Odin. What people don't really know is mom...er...Freyja has first pick of those slain in battle, and she's picky."

He thought about it for a moment. To be honest, Stefan didn't really know how his mother picked those to come to Fólkvangr.

"There's other ways besides just physical battles. One is a woman that swore off food till she was dining with Freyja after the loss of her brother and father."

Swore off food... "That sounds familiar..." He let out a long sigh. "It's been so long since I've done my studies. Do you know why that woman got chosen? Was it because she was going through a metaphorical war with her trauma and grief?" This felt like an English class. Or what an English class presumably would be like. Analyzing stories to figure out if they make sense.

But this wasn't just a story. This was real life.

"Although... Freyja's a person too. People don't always follow consistent rules," he thought to himself aloud.

"Freyja chooses based on who she thinks worthy. Sometimes it's physical battle, sometimes it's as you said an internal war with emotions. Even others are those that have lived long lives, but have significantly bettered their tribe or humanity as a whole."

Speaking on his upbringing was a little strange because even he, the son Freyja herself, didn't really know how she decided these things. Stefan looked up at the ceiling thinking for a moment before looking back to Kon with a smile.

"You know, putting that she is still a person and doesn't follow consistent rules makes a lot of sense."

Correct in his guess, his colored intensified. "It took me a while to really get that gods, yokai... really, anyone who isn't human is a person. My studies with dad always presented mythological creatures as having set rules or being enigmas with unclear explanations. They were rarely ever seen as people who made decisions based on the whims of their irrational emotions. If their emotions were irrational, that was added into the rules of their species."

He knew he was rambling. He knew he should stop and let Stefan get a word in. But he couldn't. He was too excited.

"Gods get the worst of it, I think. They're put on such a higher pedestal that thinking of them as being inconsistent can feel blasphemous. That there always has to be a reason for their decisions and that we simply can't understand. Sometimes that's the case, but spending a year here has made me think that the percentage has been waaay overblown."

Stefan was perfectly happy letting Kon talk. He seemed at least a little passionate about it and fairly knowledgeable. Noticing the colors on his hist intensify, he thought about saying something, but it wasn't overbearing and was actually pleasant to see.

"Exactly. Granted, some are very rigid, zero exceptions. But even they are the exceptions to that. Gods are just like people, some care more than others. And some are just dicks."

"That's the thing that gets me. The people here are usually... I don't know how to put this better. They're usually 'human' enough to live here together with little to no issues, but they're different enough where it's hard to really understand them. It's an uncanny valley thing to me. Familiar enough for me to know the basics of how to interact, different enough where I'm always caught off guard."

With a sigh, his colors softened. "I was raised in the Narrow Reality and only spoke to people through the internet. This is still waaay out of my league. Do you find it easy to adapt here since you were already part of the 'supernatural'?"

Stefan nodded in understanding. Kon brought up a point that he had never thought about before. It was strange that so many different people could interact here together while still surprising each other.

"You know that's a good point. I think it might be the fact that on the surface everyone is expecting all these differences so it's easier to interact, but the details of an individual are surprising to learn at the personal level."

He was trying to think of how to word what he was thinking.

"I don't know if it's easier because I don't know your side. I think who my mother is makes it easier. Seeing the beauty in all helps."

"The island is also very accomodating," Konpeitō pointed out. "There's almost something for everyone. It's not perfect... but nothing is. I think it helps that there aren't a lot of, if any, other options. It's Manta Carlos or someplace worse." It was the depressing truth. As great as the island was, finding another hodgepodge of supernaturals with a functioning community was far out of the realm of possibilities for most people here.

"Anyway, I agree there. I try to approach things with an optimistic perspective! I was born and raised in the Narrow Reality, but I only interacted with people online. Being thrown into this world was, wheeeeeew. Eventually, I figured out how to make the best of the island benefit me and ignore the worst " He splayed out his hands and shook them.

"That is very very true. Even back home, where everyone knew how things were, there were wars and fights and struggles for power constantly. Here...it's weird...everyone gets along. For the most part."

It was common knowledge in Norse history, well mythology for most, that fighting was common place. Stefan was sure it went on in Manta Carlos as well, he just hadn't noticed it yet.

"Optimism is the way to go! There's too much going on in life to look at the bad stuff all the time."
