How Can I Afford This?

Malvoes was...awestruck honestly, to be invited to go to school an a private island out in the middle of the ocean, plus the school itself was enormous, it was a great honor. The snow was light but he still trudged slowly pass the buildings, checking the map he was supplied with to get to the administration wing. This school was swanky, something kinda out of a fantasy novel, but whenever he peered inside he saw the latest tech, some he wasn't sure was technology. Eventually he made his way to the wing and got inside, it seemed even larger than it was on the outside, he made his way outside the admissions office, and he start to wonder how he was going to pay for this. The technology and architecture of the school gave off this rich vibe and he wasn't told about scholarships, he hadn't filled out for anything about this, heck he wasn't even planning on going to college, he needed to start working to keep his family afloat. Before he started thinking himself into a hole he knocked on the door with his right hand, his left hand holding the paper work he was mailed along with the invite letter. He'd stand there until invited in, he couldn't quite see if anyone else was in the office.

Maddie Lennox hadn't been on this Island long, not even a few months long. She tried not to ask questions and keep her head down. She didn't want to disappoint or irritate anyone.
So when she saw a boy(!) standing outside the administrations office and knocking on the door, she debated with herself.

On one hand, he seemed like he needed help.

On the other hand, what could she do? And talking to a girl was hard enough, try talking to a boy.

She breathed in deeply and glanced down at her dog, Bandit, who glanced back. "Okay," she said to Bandit and stepped forward.

Before Maddie could say anything to the man, Bandit let out a loud bark that came from the chest rather than the throat. Maddie shot a look at the dog, but Bandit ignored her and trodded up to the boy.

Bandit sniffed the man's legs and got all up in his bubble because that's what dogs did.

Maddie didn't know if Bandit was trying to embarrass her on purpose but she doubted it. For all that Bandit was intelligent, she didn't think he was that intelligent. Shaking herself out of her reverie, Maddie ran up to grab Bandit by the scruff.

"No! Bad dog! Bandit, knock it off!"

Malvoes would chuckle softly, petting the dog that decided to come and greet him, animals had never bothered him, in fact he often preferred them to people. On the note of people, the owner of this canine happened to be retrieving him. Seeing another person here made him feel better, unfortunately she was too young looking to be a teacher or any other faculty. He'd smile at her warmly though, never wanting to be rude when meeting a stranger.

"Hello there, cute dog you have."

He'd extend his hand assuming to shake hers, "I'm Malvoes, it's a pleasure to meet you." He'd say cheerfully.

Maddie looked fully at the man before her. Was he older than her or did he just look older? Her cheeks warmed at his greeting. Maddie stood to her full height and glanced at Bandit.

"Thanks," she said quickly avoiding eye contact.

Bandit, sensing he was liked, leaned his weight against the man and wagged his tail, his tongue rolling out the side of his mouth. He gave a goofy kind of grin up to the man.

Maddie's eyes raised when he stuck his hand out at her. She reached up and took his hand in a light grip. "I'm Madeleine Lennox. Um, Maddie, actually. I like to be called Maddie." She motioned with her chin to Bandit. "This is Bandit."

She paused an awkward beat, finally meeting his eyes and seeming unsure what to say. "Are you new here? You are, aren't you?"

He'd shake her hand lightly before breaking the contact, "It's nice to meet you Maddie, and you Bandit." Malvoes would say leaning down and patting the dog on the head before standing back up and looking at Maddie.

He'd nod slightly at her question, screatching the back of his head. "Um, yeah I'm new. I just got here from the boat, and from the dock and city to this school. I assumed to come here to figure out my classes and ask a few questions." He'd glance slightly at the paperwork he had in the envelope in his right hand.

He'd look back at this girl, and smile at her, looking at her eyes, eye contact being very important. "I'm assuming you aren't staff, but do you think that you'd be able to help me?"

Maddie's cheeks turned a bright crimson the longer the boy stared into her eyes. Finally, she couldn't take anymore and looked to Bandit as a distraction. She scratched him behind the ear as he sat by her side panting and looking up at her with admiration.

"I could try!" she said. "I know where most of the stuff around here is now, so I could show you around."

She went awkwardly quiet and shuffled from foot to foot, shifting her weight. "That's what you needed, right? Like, a guide? Or did you have questions?"

Malvoes was a bit concerned for this girl, she was getting rather red perhaps it was warm in here or perhaps she wasn't feeling well, but she seemed rather persistent in helping him out so there's no reason to reject her hospitality.

"A tour would be great! But unfortunately I have some other concerns, the letter as not as clear as I liked it to be." He'd clear his throat uncomfortably for a moment.

"For instance it says this is fully paid but I never filled anything out for it and neither did my mother. So I'm worried about how this'll come back to me. And the letter was very strange, kept saying this is for people like me gifted people, my kind. What does that mean?"

Malvoes fully knew what that meant, at least how it pertained to him, it was talking about his ability. The idea that there were others weren't that farfetched. considering his uncle was like him. But a whole island, and a school for people like that, and how did they find out about him, he tried to stay hidden and lay low. He'd shift awkwardly realizing he had been staring down for quite some time and within his pocket a few rose petals were forming in his hands. He'd quickly banish them and pull his hands out, smiling back at this girl, Maddie.

Maddie grinned when he smiled, but her cheeks didn't lose any of their redness. "Oh!"

She was certainly relieved she could answer at least one of those questions! "Almost everyone here has magic. You can see some pretty strange things around here, if you're used to humans it can be a little offputting, or cool depending on your thought process!" Now her speech was becoming excited and her hands were moving wildly as she spoke. "You can see things with horns and tails and... and... and..."

Suddenly, Maddie stopped and gave the boy a sheepish look. "Erm, well, as for the payment stuff, I'm not entirely sure, my sister kind of dealt with all that for me. I bet they found you with some kind of magic. What do you do? They might have given you a scholarship? Or maybe someone else filled something out for you?"

Bandit pushed his head to Maddie's hip as he felt her unease. One of Maddie's hand absently scratched his neck as she held the other out to Malvoes. "May I see the letter?"

Malvoes would nod as the girl spoke, so there were much more than just psychic users than he, she seemed to be describing creatures of myth and magic, just what kind of place did he get himself into?

He'd grin slightly as the girl got all excited with her description, it seems she was a bit more than a fan, the amount of enthusiasm was rather cute. Well, whatever he was going to encounter, Malvoes was pretty sure this place was mostly safe, at least from how she described it.

He'd nod again, just as he thought he'd have to find a faculty member to help most likely. "That makes sense." The concept of magic was a bit foreign to him but not entirely unbelievable, considering what he can do. At the girl's question he'd stammer a bit, "I.. uh..make things, and creatures from thin air."

"Sure, no problem." He'd say, handing her the envelope with all of the information and paperwork he was sent. He really wasn't sure how they could cover things like that, since he had almost no intention to go to college at the moment, so nothing was applied for, well at least by him.

"Oh, cool!" Maddie exclaimed, eyes twinkling at the very thought. "I've never heard of anything like that."

She glanced at the envelope in her hand.

"My power isn't that cool.I can shapeshift, but I'm not that great at it," she said as she opened the envelope. Her voice was casual, but behind that was a sense of pride for what5 she could do.

Her eyes scanned the files, and a light frown replaced her sheepish smile.

"Sorry... I don't think I can help you with this. I imagine someone had to fill something out, but if they didn't, it has to be some kind of magic that found you. Magic can do a lot you know. Wait, how many 'special' people have you met?"
