Wednesday followed after him without complaint. She still seemed a little tense as she walked, in contrast to Sazz's more obviously cheery attitude, but it was mostly her own awkwardness rather than any particular discomfort caused by him. They were just hanging out like regular kids, she had to learn how to feel comfortable with that eventually, she told herself.

She ordered a chocolate milkshake for herself once they arrived, feeling like something sweet for today, before sitting across from him. She peered over his notes while he talked, the contents all felt familiar enough to her. She'd spent years learning magic before arriving here after all, so none of it was particularly new.

“Hmm…I guess you uh, know your stuff then.” She said, giving him a small, approving smile. “Where’d you learn all this? Did you do much study before coming to the island as well?”

She still didn’t want to elaborate on the nature of her problem, but magic was something she felt comfortable discussing. It made conversation easier with a topic she was well versed in.

"We kinda came here before I could read, and I didn't really know anything off island. That is until I turned a kid in my preschool into a rat. But it is easy to just find magic books here. There's a ton of hole in the wall bookstores where you can find some good stuff. My abilities are magic, but it's not quite your standard spellcasting considering I was born with it."

He took a long sip of his smoothie, looking quite pleased with her approval. Even if it was magic talk, hanging out and drinking shakes was pretty normal. Whatever it was she was trying to do, she didn't seem willing to talk about it for the moment. This is what building trust was for though. Sazz wouldn't press for info for the moment.

"So what about you then? You're definitely not a beginner, I can. Lemme guess, heiress to a big family legacy or something?"

It was a pretty fair guess, the island had a lot of those running around.

"Uh, something like that." She said, running a hand through her hair. "I wouldn't go as far as to say I'm an heiress. I was um, adopted into the family. But...yeah, it's a family that comes from a long line of witches, so I grew up with plenty of magic.

The issue was, of course, a little more complicated. Wednesday couldn't even say her family name, giving that out could give people hints into learning her name in full, and that's not something she wanted people knowing.

The fact that almost all of her family were dead weighed on her a little more than that, however.

"S-so uh, what about your family?" She quickly asked, perhaps a little too eager to move the subject away from herself. "You keep saying you're a demon lord. Do you um, come from any particular hell?"

As a witch, Wednesday had a passing familiarity with cosmology and the various planes where demons came from. She'd even summoned a few with her family, though speaking casually to one like this hadn't happened until she came to the island.

"My family? Well, it's just me and my mom," Sazz shrugged. Unlike Wednesday who was reasonably closed off about her family, Sazz was the opposite. He was quite open about his origins, something he was pretty sure got on a lot of people's nerves.

"Well, long story short my mom wanted a kid. My father, the ruler of this particular hell didn't want me for whatever reason. So he pawned me off on her, nine months later a healthy baby Sazz was born. I'm all demon, but being more or less merged into a human like this gave me more... insight into the human condition?"

He looked like he was contemplating something for a moment. "So yeah I came from a hell, but I don't really remember it. I do feel connected to it though. But I also feel connected to here... it's a weird feeling lemme tell you."

He was back to his usual demeanor once again.

She sipped her drink as he spoke, holding the cup in both hands, head tilted slightly to the side, inquisitive. Once he finished Wednesday observed him with a thoughtful expression.

“I see…” She said. “That must um, be strange for you, yeah. I never knew my real parents, so I’ve never really felt a connection to them or another place like that.”

Wednesday did feel curious sometimes, wondering what her birth parents were like, but it was never something she seriously dug into before. Plus, it wasn’t something she really had the time to worry about now, given her situation.

“…Have you um, ever thought of trying to go back to that hell? Seeing what it’s like there?”

"I used to, but I mean it's hell. Should be reasonably obvious how things are down there. I kinda like it here, get to meet people, and things are more fun," he answered matter of factly. "I'm also pretty sure they don't have any news organizations down there too. What would I aspire to? Lead tormentor? I can do that here just by calling people on their bullshit. It's more challenging when they're not chest deep in magma regretting their life choices."

He sipped his smoothie.

"Do it on Earth then you can go to heaven. Might be boring but it's better than the alternative," Sazz took that moment to smooth out his trademark eyebrows. "Or is it?"

“I…can’t say I know quite enough about the divine to really comment.” She idly rubbed her arm as she spoke. “But I suppose that does make sense.”

Wednesday’s brief musing on the afterlife were interrupted once Sazz started playing with his eyebrows. Somehow, she couldn’t help but have a small chuckle at it.

“You’re uh, pretty particular about your appearance, aren’t you?” She said with a wry smile. Wednesday kinda stood out by herself, thanks to her green skin, so she didn’t put much effort into her appearance other than at least looking neat. Sazz’s seeming care was amusing to her.

If nothing else, she was looking a little more relaxed now, compared to how she was when they ran into each other.

"Not as much as you think. Everything on me is totally natural," he grinned. It seemed like Wednesday was starting to relax a little bit more, that was good. He knew how he was. Pretty high energy for the most part in just about everything. Sometimes he could be a bit much for people, especially the quieter types.

"So then what about you?" he asked leaning in a bit. "What kind of magic stuff can you do?"

She didn't seem too keen on telling him what she was trying to do, but he was curious about what all she did do.

Wednesday took a moment to take another sip from her drink, before sitting it back down on the table with a simple smile.

“Well uh, I told you before that I’m a witch, raised by witches. I can do a lot with magic, provided I have time to prepare. Although uh, I can’t really do big stuff on command like a lot of people on the island.”

She tapped a finger against the table for a moment, considering something, before looking back down to her milkshake. It’d been starting to warm a little, so she figured it would be a good opportunity to show something she could do.

“Um, my family also specialised in this symbol magic, which is something I can show a little easier.”

She put her finger against the cup and started to trace along the plastic, leaving a glowing magic trail in its wake. She quickly drew a few small shapes against it, before tapping the completed symbol. Soon after, a new layer of condensation formed around the cup as the temperature of its contents dropped. She picked the cup back up and took another sip.

“So um, yeah. That’s the basic explanation.”

"Sounds interesting and complicated," Sazz mused, noting the particular symbols and the effect it had on the milkshake. Magic really was such fun to talk about. Sazz considered what he could contribute, talking about his own abilities would probably be fine at this point.

"My own powers work a little differently than what people assume. I don't actually create the flames I use, I summon them straight from a hell pit. Similarly, my shapeshifting is a summoning that I just channel directly through my body. Pretty cool huh?"

He thought it was at the very least. There was a plethora of things he wanted to try just to see if he had any aptitude for it. It always seemed like he could accomplish things if he simply worked at it hard enough.
