“That above all else. They did not look out their windows. No matter what noises or dreadful possibilities, no matter how awful the unknown, there was an even worse thing: to look the Gorgon in the face.” As Thorn read the novel Salem's Lot by Stephen King, she felt her heart sink. It was, indeed, the scariest novel she had read since she had left her previous life behind. Instinctively, she felt her hand go up to a strange-looking coffin-shaped sparkling locket hanging from her neck and began twirling it in her fingers - a nervous habit of her. The only reason Thorn borrowed this book from library was because she couldn't find a good depressing novel, and she wanted to sit down and read immediately without wasting time to search for a book 'good enough'.
Her heart's beating lost the rhythm as it began to beat fast as she took in scary scenes from the book. She felt herself biting her lower lip hard. Her breaths were uneven. And she felt an aura of darkness near her, a certain scent she thought she had forgotten. Thinking it was the aftermath of a horror scene from her novel, she brushed it aside and continued with the novel. But the scent got heavier and heavier by every passing moment. She looked up around her, but saw no one. Must be my imagination, she thought and continued with her book.
She was about to turn the page when she stopped. The scent was overwhelming now. She looked up from her book once again, to find a boy no older than nineteen, with blue eyes and blonde hair, nodding at her.
She could feel familiar vibes coming from him. She racked her brain, thinking who he is, but came up with nothing. Softly, she closed her book and said,
"Do I know you?"
